Not jumpin on ya hot spot but what do you mean "tough deal to leave them on or go shut them off" ?? Consevation clubs can only do things with the permission of the DNR i.e. permits etc. Why would you shut them off?

Cause the DNR wants to try to have a good kill. The DNR is also saying Clear lake is in bad shape to. I dont believe they are from talking to differant people.

I think aerators have ther place if somebody will net the rough fish out more often but sometimes having a good winterkill and let mothernature run its course may be the best.I also know that the rough fish are alot tougher and may not be killed off .Double edge sword

DOUBLE EDGE SWORD!!!

Note from admin, please read frum policy before posting again. Thank you.

Do you have any idea how many walleyes, crappies, and countless other worthy fish live in this lake?? I see where ur from do you fish it?? With the amount of flow through this lake and creek connections you would never kill the rough fish. Just a total waste of time and catastrophic failure of a better then average fishery for this area. I fish it regularily and last year had exceptional days....WASTE OF TIME! Gettin warm in here enough said!

DOUBLE EDGE SWORD!!! I am sure this will attract a moderator but how stupid!! Do you have any idea how many walleyes, crappies, and countless other worthy fish live in this lake?? I totally agree I have had many exceptional days just fishing the shore. It is or was a good spot to go. The pressure has been of thet lake for a few years since round has been so hot. What a shame. If the guy who has the permit to seine it would do it instead of waiting to make it worth his time that would get rid of some of the rough fish it would be a start.

Netting rough fish is a band-aid at best, there is no possible way to get them all out and then they will spawn again and have better survival rates and there will be an explosion of small rough fish.

I don't know much about Loon lake other than it is shallow and is prone to winter kill. Both sides of the argument have made valid points for leaving it on or turning it off. Each case is differnt and I don't know enough about this one to comment.

All I know is the recent warm weather and rain will help to bring up the levels of dissolved O2 in the lakes and help to prevent any winterkills from occuring.

has anyone actully talked with the co or the sportsmens club or is this all rumor, i did talk to a couple people in that area and they said they have not hard anything about this, one works for the DNR,

Theres alot of rumors going around about this. Like the DNR testing on the south east side of the lake by the dock where it is shallow instead of out by the areators and the conservation club is testing out by the areators in which you will get two differant results. I did talk to a lake owner out there who says he has some thing to do with the lake some board or something like that and he says all is good. Just what I have heard

killing it off won't do anything for it carp, bullheads and sheapheads will still survive. What needs to happen is state needs to get off their buts and actually spend some money down here instead of all up in the metro and dredge the lakes go from 6 feet deep to teens to twenties run off is the problem lack of structure. Ya this is a sore spot I guess my home town in iowa did a dredge program with no help from dnr and it helped the water quality greatly.

I talked too a bunch of people about this. It appears it is just a bunch of hoo haa...no ones even heard about it. One guy almost had a heart attack and he lives there!! He is looking into it.

Rumor..

Not gonna happen.

Shutting off the aerators this late in the game, especially after yesterday, wont have any affect. While it may kill some game fish, the carp, catfish, and buffalo will just enjoy the extra space.

Keep all catfish you catch.

Actually the carp are the first to die in low Oxygen. Perch and northerns can survive the longest in low oxygen.

I've heard the same thing. Unfortunately, I don't think bullheads need any oxygen to survive. wink I remember as a kid, (a long time ago), catching a stringer of bullheads, and not wanting to clean them right away, I'd hang them from the overhead garage door handle, in the sun, for a few hours. That didn't even seem to make them sad. They were still flopping around.

Dredging a lake in this part of the state is pointless. Farm field run off would fill it back in as fast as you could take it out. It sounds great, but it would never work. Farming is the center of our local economy, and farmers are who our local legislators aim to please.

look at emmetsburg ia they dredge the lake with no help from the dnr and they improved the run off and 80% of that lake is farmed around and its still doing good for 20 years since dredging started. Five island went from max depth of 6 feet to over 20 after dredge farms just need to be less greedy and not farm up to lakes makes me mad when farmers destroy 100 year old tree fence lines and keep taking more of the ditch just so they can get one or two more rows in same with farming right up to the lakes.

dont blame farmers you dont see them coming to you and telling you how to make your money, remeber farmers are dealing with high cost, everything has tripled in price for them so dont blame them for anything

its not all the farmers but should the government regulate them cutting down trees along fence lines that are over 100 years old that can never be replaced in my job the government does tell me what I can do a lot of regulations refrigerant and chemicals but oh well i wish i could get government subsidies

you dont think there are regulations and rules that the government imposes on farmers??? there are thousands more than you could imagine and if farmers are cutting down trees by a lake... A. its illegal and you can not wrap up all farmers as being bad or B. its the farmers land that he bought years ago and its his to do what he wants with it... if it was sold as farm land he bought it to farm it... FINALLY.. this is a fishing forum... lets talk fishin

There is far less sediment run of from farms than one thinks, at least that ends up in lakes. If there were lots most lakes would completly fill in, dredged or not.

right lotwsvirgin heron lake decades ago use to be deeper but because of run off its super shallow. I even remember from conservation class in school that farm run off is the leading cause for lakes silting up from drain tiles dumping into cricks that trees and vegetation where removed from that dump into lakes

see this page for the ones that dont think farm up to lakes or cricks cause erosion

There are many reasons the lakes are in the shape they are in. Conservation is the responsability of us all, not only those who farm.

Having said that, I just read the last farmer bashing post I'm going to read. Good conversation is what it's all about, but any more bashing of farmers, or any other group for that matter, and this thread will be locked.

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
    • smurfy
got mine done........for the cabin.....ready for summer festivities!!!!!!   there was still frost in the ground...........but good gawd are the lakes low!!!!!
    • CigarGuy
