Vexilar /Polar Vision thru ice?

Recommended Posts

BigWhopper

For those who have been fishin the mud flats - can a guy read depths thru the ice with a Vexilar or a Polar Vision or do we have to pretty much punch holes??

Also, - and I greatly appreciate the responses, I bought a new Polar Vision from Strikemaster and can't get it to work. Clear ice, moisture to couple - I think I am using it right - but is there some trick or something I have missed - or is it just a bad unit?? Even tried on the top of the water in a clean hole. It always just says " - - - "?? Thanks.

If you tried it in a fresh hole and you only get the --- you might have a bad one or need new batteries. I have the same unit. I don't use it much. It's good for early ice, but after that the ice is usually too thick and cloudy for it.

I would just go ahead and dig a hole, there is too much snow and even if you could find a spot with no snow (unlikely unless you are fishing on a road!) the ice would be to chalky to get a good reading. I could be wrong, but this weekend I splashed some minnow water on the snow and the vex didn't pick anything up.

Honestly, I would send it back and get my money back. A flasher will do the same job.

Thanks guys. I will send it back. And I will prepare to punch holes - better sharpen the blades

Though a flasher will do the same thing as far as giving you the depth, the smaller size and convience of the polar vision is a huge bonus for those who dont mind the $100 sticker on it! As far as it not reading, it could either be that the ice is to thick this late in the season or the battery could be going bad. I have the mar-cum and always keep it inside were it is warm when not in use.

They are kinda nice to have. But after I bought it I felt bad about buying it and felt that the $100 could have gone toward a higher end flasher instead.

Hey Guys, I'm wondering what the water temp on the St.Croix is. I Haven't herd anything, all I know is that Catfish become inactive after it drops below 60F. I want to know if they have already become inactive, you would think we would at least have until October.    One more inquire,  anyone one know about a nice carp lake north of the metro. Most people don't like fishing for common carp, but they are a great fall fish to catch when they Get 30+ plus pounds.

All right man I'll make sure to tell you how I do, I have also been looking at the sunrise river. The sunrise Looks like one of those rivers that all the local kids fished in the 80's, But then it got polluted and over fished. I'll Try the sunrise one of these days, I don't know what i'll catch,  Maybe it's like in the Simpsons with those Three eyed fish.    As for the rum river, I can't wait to fish that. I'll wait for a nice cold front when all those small mouth start to eat everything in site, They need the fat for winter. I'll make sure to tell you how it goes.
