The one that almost got away !!

On Tuesday I was up at LOW and had been fishing two holes a good 50 yds apart. My grandpa was with me and he kept the minnows by him. Well, I just caught a couple nice fish so I went to bring them over to him and get some more minnows. I figured I wasnt gonna be gone long so I poped a dead minnow on the line and dropped it down. and let the pole sit on the ice. <P>I was gone about 2 minutes and when I returned, there was no more pole. I was just irate. well, nothing I could do could get me my pole back, so I walked over to my other hole and fixed up another rod and got it ready to place in the hole that my other rod went down, I got back about 10-15 minutes later, and all the sudden my pole rises to the top of the hole, I couldnt believe it. there is no way that fish came to return my pole, so I grabbed the rod and give it a mild jerk, and low and behold there was a 16" walleye waiting to be had at the other end. The same thing happened to me. I know the feeling, both angry and amazed. It must happen more than we know. All it is, is the same fish feeding down there, so I guess it's not that impossible for it to happen. Mine happened with a greasy snake though, not a nice walleye. we were night fishing when my buddy (who was a little anebriated) wan't looking and had a fish take his pole down the hole. he was mad, but what could he do. the next day we went out to the same spot, and realized that in the dark we'd forgotten to retrieve one of our tipups (all a little anebriated!). The flag was up! we had to chop it loose, then pulled up on the line, first pulled up the rod from the night before with an eelpout on it, then pulled up the tipup line with a keeper walleye on it! <BR>

I was at LOW once and I accidently kicked my rod in. I don't use cheap ice fishing combos, I use my nice expensive summer fishing reel and lost it. So thought I would try to use a big spoon and just jig (hoping that the trebel hook will catch the line of my other rod). I was jigging for about 2 minute when I got a strike, it was a 19" walleye and I wasn't using any bait. So I thought I would keep trying without bait, and ended up snagging my line. However the bail was left open (so a fish could not pull my rod in)and just as I had the rod to the hole, the line started to come off the spool. After pulling most of my line off the spool, the rod finally came through the hole.<P>Ole

Just last weekend were fishing at LOW. My wife is resetting the not because she had it slip while she landed a 37' Northern Pike. She tells me that the weight for setting the depth isn't hitting the bottom right. So she reels it back up and there is a 12 sauger on the line hooked to the jig with the depth weight in it's mouth. He must have thought the red weight was good bait.
