Any fish being caught off of Park Point?

Recommended Posts

I have been out there four times now, the only luck I have had is away from people, (by something blue, thanks Northlander!) but only having a car and not wanting to get stuck it is hard to get away from the people! I am starting to get frustrated and wondering what the heck I am doing wrong!

The river can be really hit or miss at times around the point. I have had very mixed results with good days and then skunked(on walleyes) the next day. Just put some time in and get away from people and you are bound to get a couple eyes

Good Luck

Not to hijack this post, but how does a guy get into the pout or sturgeon? I really want to catch a sturgeon through the ice!

Anywhere around park point you just have to hope that one comes through and so far it seems like they like smaller jigs and hole minnows but I really dont know alot about them just what I have seen so far this year...also maybe try some deeper water

Guys I don't think it's legal to target sturgeon on the St. Louis River. confused I'm just sayin'.

I know its not and have only caught them while walleye fishing and have released them as fast as possible...still a fun fish to hook into though

Ive caught quite a few sturgeon on a smelt just laying on the bottom...leaves out the chance for a walleye though but pout and pike will eat it as well. Definitely something tight to the bottom. Crawlers can work good too, on the bottom...Really they will eat about anything but if I had one choice I'd probably pick the smelt. They will wear you out once you hook a good one.

Ya that blue object will soon be a magnet I can tel. Its a good spot if ya get just off the channel and in the humps. 8' seems best there. Dont be afraid to get out early and pop some holes into the drop of the channel and jig. I have caught some very nice walleyes doing that at dead noon.

My best bite has been on a lindy rig with a very small floater and a small chub tail hooked. Drop it to the bottom, put on a small bobber for a strike indicator and open the bail. Let the bobber go under the ice and then pop um. Lately they have been hitting very light. Some nights thats the only way to catch them and others they want it jigged.

If your not catching fish at 1 spot by 3 pm move to another.

Hit the bay tonight and got 8 fish. A couple nice ones at 26.5" and 24" and a couple take homes and a few dinks.

Tingler in silver/chart was hot and got a few on a buckshot and a few more on a forage minnow spoon in glow perch. The 4 biggest fish pounded the offerings. Best bit between about 2:30 and 4:30pm. Nothing at dusk. 20' of water on a sharp channel break.

Anyone fish the contests down there today? Im wondering what won them?

I have a bunch that I got may years ago. I found a little gas station with about 20 of them and got the whole batch. I probably have about 25 or so. I had more but them LOW pike just wont give them back. shocked

Hit the bay again this morning and did well again. Fresh walleye lunch was great.

If ya havent tried the Shore Lunch Beer Batter give it a try. Mix it with a dark beer like the South Shore Stout and its AWESOME!

I was by barkers last night and saw how many guys were driving trucks out there, kind of surprised me. There was a road going out there, but it looked like there was a break of some kind that would keep a guy tight to that shore, where there were few people fishing. Wheres the best place to get out off park point?

Yea this big weather change slowed everything down a bit I guesss...we had good success on the bay last friday. Hoping to get out thursday morning and friday.

Northlander how was the ice conditions out there? Is it sloppy?

Well if you have a perm on the bay you may want to think about getting it off. The west wind at 30 mph is pushing a lot of water around and its 12" deep in spots. Holes drilled are funneling water like crazy so dont drop any tires through.

If you are the owner of the balck canvas semi perm you may want to go get it because its on its side and full of water and it will surely freeze in if you dont get to it very soon!

Fishing was great for those who were out in certain areas as usual. That makes 5 of us out that I could see.

I wont go back out until we get a deep freeze to lock up the water thats all over the place. I actually saw waves going across spots of the harbor!

Cracks and holes are getting bigger and deeper by the hour.

Like I said if your house is out there go check it. Houses on the barkers side should be ok but if your in the middle on the flats our closer to park point your house is in a lot of water and will freeze in if we get any kind of cold.

Snow forecatsed will only turn it into 1 huge slush hole.

Jighead yours looks ok but there is no snow by it to push around it anymore. I could see right under it.

I figured that would turn into a mess fast with all this warm weather. I will be hoping for no snow and a good cold snap, I hate fishing in one big puddle...

Ya we need a couple of well below 0 nights to lock this back up. The bay will be a skating rink when that happens. If you dont have the perms blocked up then they will surely be frozen in.

Time to get a 14 fter out. They will be swimming around above the ice. May she will freeze up in the next week or so. To many nice temps in the near future.

I was thinking about heading out this weekend? would you not advise it? If not, any suggestions to a lake to fish that isn't a slush pit. I got a long weekend ahead of me and it would be nice to get out.

Gritsnham we will be down there at about the smae time. Lot less water today than a few days ago. Wind off the lake sucks though. I probably will take the snowmobile. There should be enough water out there to cool things down.

Be VERY VERY careful on the bay!!! There are some spots that are very deep water and some looked to be open water. Out in front of the Park Point landing and airport area looks decent but the road off the Park Point landing is gaining water and losing ice quickly.

Myself I will be walking out the next few times. I cant get to my "Honey Hole" unless I take my sled.

Be careful guys! No walleye is worth a bath or worse yet your life!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
