2020 Forest Lake-Hinckley-Lindstrom-Pine City-Rush City Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Saw some skim around the edges of flake the other day but it will be awhile before thiongs lockup with the 50 degree temps forecast for the next couple weeks and lows in the high 30's. Could be interesting with the lakes as low as they are fising them this winter.

I've seen a few ponds still clinging to some skim ice, but these temps just aren't good for business. My target date of Dec. 1st isn't looking too good frown

1.5 inch of ice you are crazy no fish is worth that. 58 in the cities and 50s all the way through thanksgiving, no way we have safe ice until the second week of December at the earliest

The high on wednesday is supposed to be 60 frown There is a cool down coming, but not until next weekend. I've already given up hope on getting out on the 1st.

It won't be too long, even with warm weather. The sun angle is so low, and short in duration that the few days of warmth shouldn't set it back too far.

The lake I plan on fishing is small and shallow, and since water levels are down 1+ ft, in theory the lake should freeze faster wink

Most lakes around me have a good portion of ice on them and a few have locked up, hoping to get out monday at the earliest on a nice shallow lake for some panfish and tip up fishing.

Well finally got out measured anywhere from 2-4 inches of ice across the whole lake. Took all the precautions as well( lifejacket, rope, ice picks, buddy and etc.). No fish though not sure what happened to my vexilar guessing the battery was dieing, so i went out blind for only 45 min or so looks like it will be coming off this weekend so hopefully ill get some fishing in!

Let's hope not. This weekend they are talking maybe 50 for one of the day's. It's a good weekend to go to the ice fishing show and get things ready for when the ice is safe.

Looks like the forecast is now say the warm weather will be a bit warmer, but shorter lived. There was one day this week they thought the 40+F temps would last 4-5 days. Now they are saying only 2-3 and below freezing every night. That's a good sign for the ice that's already formed. Hopefully it will hold up ok.

Forest looked pretty well locked up today, barring any heavy winds it certainly could withstand some daytime highs and drizzle with it making ice at night. I didn't drive around te lake to look for open water but first lake looked pretty well locked up as far as I could see.

I just spoke to my dad and he said there was a portable out on a lake near Lindstrom today. He's only 62, is he going senile already or can anyone else confirm this?

I don't know the name of the lake, but it would have been on of them right off highway 8, since he was on his way to WI.

well most of the lakes are locked up around me and the ones that arent have just a few little holes open do to the geese or the deepest spot in the lake. Made it out to a different lake tonight caught a few nice crappies 2nd fish was 11 inches didnt expect that weird how i was fishing in 25-30 and the fish were right under the ice! never had that happen to me before

There was someone ice fishing in the channel between South Lindstrom and Chisago today. Ice just formed two days ago. Hope it was worth it .

Drove by Centerville and Peltier, both lakes are locked up. Was enough ice to support the hundreds of geese standing out there, but probably not enough for people yet. I stopped at Otter Lake and walked out a few feet, ice is about 3 inches out to the end of the bulrushes, but probably not much more than an inch beyond that.

Don't know about pokegama but ann had 2 inches. Any lakes around Chisago safe to fish? trying to find somewhere to punch some holes this weekend.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
