Gotta love this time of the year with all the sounds in the air.  Saw a buncha Toms on the way back feeding by a road I took.

Well, its now April 17th.... where the hell is spring??? I met up with eyeguy for a few minutes on one of our area lakes.  He was just packing up when I arrived. The report was lots of smalls, but good ones were starting to turn on.

I found much the same as Royce had said...lots of smalls. I knew there were good fish in the lake, we have gotten them here before. So I broke out the drill and started to search. I went the obvious direction first, shallow... drilled deep into a cabbage bed... nada thing there. Drilled out some bullrushes, nothing there yet either. So deeper I went, got a series popped right on the edge of the basin,  16-20ft of water. Bingo, this is where the bigger fish had gone:D it took a ton of moving to stay on the nicer fish today. They were cruising the break in small pods and moving fast, while the smaller fish opted to pretty much stay in the same area.

Best bait was a 4mm J and S custom gold disco ball head  with a  purple Impulse mayfly.  The little larger head was needed to get my bait back down as quick as possible. I tried a few other baits today, but kept coming back to the gold/purple combo.

I measured 24-26inches of ice yet. The top couple inches are soft, but the rest is still rock hard. Some North facing shorelines and access points are starting to show a little effects from the sun and run off. At this rate we should still have fishable ice well into next week localy.

Fun day today with Rick and Joe. The 9 plus inchers were very playful today. Few crappies around but nothing big. Tried new jigs and combos for fun, Purple mayfly did a little better today than the pink slug bug. Back at it in the morning. Grillin time! gonna be nice out there. :)

Great Time today! We didn't put the slam to them  but boy did I enjoy the day. I know I did a lot  more relaxing and jaw jacking today then fishing LOL! But after as many days as I have spent on the ice my  thought process lately has been been there done that this winter,   so really didn't go at it to hard.   My Ice season is comeing to a end and today I was alright with that. :) It was a day of laughs, great eats and some serious relaxation among a great group of guys. I know I wish I would of put some sunscreen on the face wow Hot tomato LOl! Bet Joe is hurting also he looked a little pink mid day. Thanks Royce, Rick G , Joe and his father for the good times., we have  done a few of these mini get togehter's this winter and I believe our friendships have grown stronger everytime we share the ice together.  Looking forward to possibly another outing if not open water is just around the corner ;)

Yeah, Chris. I was hoping to get some color. Unfortunately, bright pink was not the color I had in mind.

Going to get the kids out on the river today with gloves and garbage bags for Earth day.Plenty of garbage around the local community spots that can be removed.Im sure there will be more but it's something to do and it will look a little prettier out there.

Thanks for your efforts!!! Let me know if you need any free city garbage bags; I'm involved with the City of St. Cloud Green Team. You can place them at the Munsinger Garden greenhouse, or any trail access points for easy Park Dept. pickup.

Anyone know for 100% positive who has shiners in the west metro area? Apparently there is a large shortage of them again this year and I prefer them for set lining cats.

Might be heading up to Borden Lake this weekend. That is, if the ice and travel conditions are good. Is atv travel possible or hasn't there been much traffic on the lake?

We are new to Minnesota fishing, I've read you can have 3 hooks within 9" on a tip up.  Can you have a minnow on each hook?  Or only allowed one bait, for example, a 9" smelt with all the hooks attached?  Kind of a man made lure.

This will be my second year going.  All fish need to be released alive.  Its pretty deep water.  Has barotrauma popped up at all with fish being released at the contest?

Variable conditions seems to be the trend this season. This past weekend we had yet another snow storm which dumped approximately 10-12 inches in the Remer, Longville, Outing, and Walker area. Travel has been best still with sleds or track machines. Colder temps the past few weeks have firmed things up on some bodies of water which were once heavy laden with slush, however there are still several lakes that unfortunately we would not advise to travel on until things improve, and with the "January thaw" approaching that might be a while. If you are planning on traveling to the area, call the area resorts or bait shops to get current conditions prior.
This past weekend was the Winter Inland Trout Opener. Stories of success were across the board. As some people had great success, others struggled. We ourselves definitely had noticed more lookers than takers on the Vexilar, but managed to get a few topside. Fighting the cold front that hit mid Saturday morning, being on the right body of water, and having the right presentation all factored in.
Lake Trout: Lakers are hitting tipped tubes and spoons in 35'-70' of water. Look to the inside turns, points, and shelves. And the best advice I can give any fisherman targeting trout is STAY MOBILE. Keep moving until you get one on the graph, never spending more than 5-10 minutes in an inactive hole. And not only should you stay on the move, but keep that lure moving consistently, working the entire water column.

Stream Trout: Try searching around 4'-9' of water on the stocked trout lakes. Small spoons like the Clam Speed Spoon tipped with a Maki Plastic or waxie have produced the best.

Panfish: Hit the shallow weedlines for those big Gills, and drill out over the deep basins in 22'-35' feet of water to catch the Crappies. Tungsten jigs tipped with waxies have worked well. Again, the key to success is staying mobile.

Walleye: Still can be found on the shoreline points anywhere from 11'-26' feet of water and on the sunken humps. Jigging using spoons tipped with a minnow head have been best when they have been aggressive. If your noticing them coming in yet seemingly shy of the jig, slow down your movement, and try a simpler presentation. Toss down a set-line with a plain hook tipped with a medium Shiner or small Sucker Minnow.

Anyone brave the snow and get out for the trout opener? Based on reports and pictures I seen, if you didn’t have a snowmobile, you weren’t getting anywhere away from the gunflint trail.

Every time I see it snow in Grand Marais, I cringe. I’m planning on going up there in late March. It’s shaping up to be nothing but slush, slush, and more slush! 😖

Has anyone been out to big swan recently? Curious how the ice is and if there are spots to avoid as I’ve not fished this lake before. Looking to target cats as my other lakes have been lacking this year. Don’t need other people’s spots just ice conditions. Would like to bring out my 3/4 ton and 17’ IC if possible.

The boys John and Richy and our grand daughter Ashly  kept busy Thursday into Friday. After spending most of the day lite out on the lake they started to tackle blue thunder again. Working in the dark with White lightnings headlights giving them light, I have no clue how they repaired her again. From my research they would need a few specialty tools . I woke up Friday morning to look out the window to see blue thunder turned around.  With customer arriving. Ashly was going to clean and detail the houses. Around 9;30 after a couple calls to Ashly I walked over to wake her and crack the whip. There would be plenty of time to sleep sunday. After rousting her I find out once they got blue thunder going they headed out on the lake tell 5 am, prepping for the weekend. I think Jonny boy was on a mission to get all the houses on fresh ice. I again stayed off the lake most of the day, until customers started arriving. I figured I could escort them out so the crew could keep plugging away.  Once I dropped off Cody and his family off at Colorado fish house I drove over to say hello to Rick and the guys in North Dakota fish house. I have no clue what time they checked in but they had 2 in the bucket and had released a couple smaller fish. That was at least a encouraging site as I plan on fishing old Minnesota everyday starting sunday. Old Minnesota is just south of north Dakota 150 feet or so. I can see how I can do after we have clients fishing in it yesterday and today. I plan on fishing it 3 or 4 nights in a row before the guys move it for the up and coming weekend for Wayne and Paul.  Kevin and his crew are  staying in Kentucky .They brought sleds so are planning to go find the fish rather then wait for them to swim under the house.  Jonny boy and Richy got the last house moved, California while the customers waited. I did visit for a minute . They were being very patient plus excited to see the house being prepped onto a new spot.  Yesterday morning I took the red baron to the gas station to fuel her up. I've got to be honest. It felt good to feel the power of that 454 as I shifted the gears to see how the tranny felt.  Today I'm going to clean up our driveway with blue thunder to see how she feels.  Next week the guys getjust a little break as nothing is rented un tell Friday when again we have a full house.  I'll shoot for a fishing report Monday morning as 3 of the houses have repeat customers that I can maybe visit a bit.  Its a busy Saturday here on the shores of upper red lake. Red lake adventures has there big walleye tournament today. register at there place. Rodgers is hosting the ice castle event on land I believe? Jrs under new ownership is  having there indoor fishing contest which is a hoot.  Next weekend Hillmans has there super bowl Chile cook off. I asked the hammer to enter. I may also make a entry. Its always a treat to taste different chile's.  A few more tid bits to try and make the world a little better. recycle old electronics,  Do not spread fake news "not even a fishing report" Adopt a pet. I sure would like to have a cat again. The hammer would rather wait. Learn cpr, be a better listener, always say I love you as you never know

Fished Chisago Lake today. Drove truck out. Ice was about 18 inches, and travel conditions were good. Caught a walleye, sunfish, crappie, and perch all in succession to start. I fished right in the middle of the lake in the deep hole. Marked lots of fish, all within 2 feet of the bottom. They weren’t active, but they weren’t tight lipped either. Caught 16 total. Aside from 2 nice crappies and a jumbo perch, everything was pretty small.
    • Getanet
Yeah, but man I bet the walleyes were on fire!   That weekend was crazy. First time I can recall Metro Transit pulling buses off the road. We took videos of the kids sledding down our ice covered driveway and down to the neighbors driveway.
    • nofishfisherman
Absolutely, we were pretty bummed out the day before the trip when we officially pulled the plug but the morning we planned to leave we woke up to the roads in the twin cities covered in a solid layer of ice so just getting out of town would have been hard.  Then we saw the amount of snow falling up north and it was obvious we made the right call.  It simply wouldn't have been safe to go.
