Plus, there’s an odd affliction some of us have.  We have to get away from every day home life to concentrate on our passions.

I’m already going on 8 years in my new location and don’t feel like I’ve even scratched the surface of the possibilities around here.  2-3 hours a week (if even) isn’t enough.  I have to start concentrating like it’s a destination or give up all my responsibilities and ignore the family to do better.

I’ll take a week off and fish every daylight hour in Ontario but have yet to take even 1 day off to fish around home.

I used to know ‘Shoe like the back of my hand - when I lived in Brooklyn Park and Ramsey.  It was #1 on my favorite list in my tourney years.

👌 pretty much nailed it.  more so, even on weekends up there pretty much any lake i go to......may have only 1-3 boats on it........or fishhouses for that matter! next week when i'm up there i'm going out of my comfort zone and may even hit bowstring!!!!!!!!😉

Exactly, I seem to in my mind put a 20mile "Dead zone" ring around the cities I must get by to find any good fishing. The only Shoe lake I fished had a Moose swimming in it! 😆

Well you have some pretty decent lakes not far from your home - as long as you can get walleye off the brain.

Just got back from a drive around some of the lakes South of St Cloud.  Bay club access on Clearwater has a huge drift right in front of the landing. Looks like some places are bare ice, while other spots look to have some pretty big drifts. Kinda hard to tell right now how much is actually on the lake. Couple smaller lakes looked like they had less snow out aways and quite a bit piled up along the shorelines.  Heard from a buddy Horseshoe and Ceder Island access points on 22 are plowed and drifted shut.

One heck of a storm we had. Hopefully by Sunday some of the lakes will be a bit more accessible.

Great job, Matt!!! That's one heck of a crappie. And good job putting it back, that's very cool.  Next time, push the fish up to the edge of the board to where the tape  starts...and close that mouth and pinch tail to get accurate measurements 😉😁

I attempted to take another pic with a proper bump on the fish but as I went to take the pic the fish flipped off the board and went back down the hole either way it was a nice fish.

How come you don't have it up against the fence on the board?  If you're gonna fabricate the size of a fish, at least don't show us the evidence that clearly indicates that its a fabrication lol

We definitely don't need to be name-calling here....we as a group should be better than that!!! Sorry , Matt!  Again, very nice fish.... Most anglers will never touch one of that caliber in their whole life😉

My response to them messages were "when you catch one that big maybe you can show me" I've got 3 on the wall from Little Rock from 2020 two at 16 1/2 and one at 17. And those were legitimately measured and reported to the DNR had them done by Flatten in Saint Joe he did a really good job.

I've been in this "group" since like 2010 and fished with alot of good people from here but I have to credit "icehawk" for getting me hooked on the slabs he was generous enough to show me some tips and tricks and even let me tag along a few times.

Good teacher. As is Rick G. Just don’t drill within 10 feet of them 😂😉lol

The surprising thing to me, is that there are 5 members still on this site other than the ones that post often!?!?😂  I don't believe any of the resident posters would private message much, as none of us are afraid to say things in the community rather than privately, but with that said, other than giving people a hard time, I don't think the resident posters would be mean about a measuring error.  Maybe I just think the best intentions from the remaining few on this site...

👍 totally agree......it shouldnt be rocket science to look at the picture and actually figure it out for oneself.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
