Pretty quiet in here. Does no one fish the river anymore?

I made it out again the other day but this time with both kids. Fishing is a little more difficult with a 4 and 6 year old that like to pester and pick at one another. We fished for about and hour. The first half hour was the 2 arguing about who's line gets to go where and me playing referee to keep a hook out of fingers. After they became bored with that we were able to fish. I normally don't use minnows but picked some up to put on the kids hooks. I also used them on my jig. We ended up taking home 4 walleyes for the kids to have a meal and missed and lost a lot more. Every eye I caught just hammered the jig and all had a belly full of minnows.

When end we got home my 6 year old daughter helped me filet the fish. She made me smile when she demanded that I open the stomach to see what was in there. She pulled out the Y bones and checked to make sure I didn't miss any in the filets. I cooked them a couple days later. I thought with 4 fish between 15-17 that I'd at least get a taste but I was wrong again. My semi-picky children devoured every last bite of fish.

Sounds like the kids had a good time even with the fuss they make.  Keep taking them along and before long they will be begging to go again.

Drove through Wahpeton/Breckenridge Friday and noticed a few guys out fishing.  Must be something happening.

Walleye fishing on the Red River is the best I have ever seen in terms of numbers.  Many year classes and great numbers of fish.  Very few monsters that people are after are being reported.  Hard to say why as we are hearing about a few.  Keep at it I guess, the weather looks good for the next week and if huge walleyes were common everybody would fish for them.

Anyone fish the Red this time of year? I'm fairly new to the area and only hear of people fishing it in the spring and fall for walleyes. Looking to get out after work being the iced over lakes are a little bit of a drive from here.

I've heard of people ice fishing the river before, but I don't know where. As of last week, river was locked solid in the Fargo area. Saw some snowmobile tracks and foot prints, but don't think anyone was fishing.

I never fished north of Wahpeton. When I fished down there I'd go south. There's normally some walleye biting early in the year south of the main road through town. I don't know how it would be this time of year. I always fished it first ice because that was usually fishable before most lakes. If you do go out I'd recommend bringing someone along and having a chisel along to check ice. That river ice can be very inconsistent.
