With the heavy snow from the last six weeks, it has curtailed a lot of the activity that is normally seen.

The lakes are beginning to heal up a bit, but there is still a lot of slush in spots. Use caution going off the beaten path.

Ditto Gissert's reply...fished a couple days over the last few weeks..LOTS of water as soon as you drill holes and plenty of slush pockets..Can't imagine having a permanent shack out around the area...fishing was not very good either..

We have been out on Rush every weekend and it has been slow. We get fish but not like we did early in the season. Crappies as of lately have even been picky. Have not done much morning or late night fishing any suggestions if I'm wasting my time on either.

Lot's of light biters last week. I was running the line over my finger to detect any bites. Even then I would not feel all the bites. A few times I would just lift up because the fish on my vexilar was all over my bait and the fish would be on!

Spent most of Saturday on Ottertail, Had trouble finding fish and only ended up with 5 decent perch in 14 foot depth. They were biting when I could locate them but they seemed to be few and far between. Lots of houses removed from the lake. Not bad getting around on a snowmobile.

Same story for me on OT. I located some fish but they just were not biting and when they were they were so small that they were stealing the minnow head. I tried many different depths, etc. It was frustrating dealing with the wind too....overall, pretty disgusted with it.

Fished most of Sunday on Rush Lake. My first Hot spot, a good panfish spot in Dec., produced zilch for sunnies (a couple bits) and one pike. Next, fished among the crowd on the East side and hooked into several very small sunfish. Third spot, found some crappie and sunfish in 17 fow on a sharp break. They were really finicky with a lot of pop and stop bites. Only caught 3 of each between 4 & 6PM, but they were nice size. All on waxies. Minnows produced no bits. It pays to keep moving and it was a great day weather wise.

We're coming up this weekend to Rush. What are the conditions on the lake after the last couple days weather? Snowmobile travel? Anyone been on the trails to NYM and OT, Maplewood, Smokey Hills, Itasca.

Anyone want to provide some info on what the best access to go out of on Otter? Any hints on where some good fishing is for some decent size perch on this lake? South, North, West, East side?

i also had a monster smallie break my line, she took a lucky craft live pointer. i would guess her to be at least 4 lbs from how she looked. it was starting to get dark. but she was huge

seen alot of carp up shallow, but once i got out my fly rod, i couldnt find any of em.

also found a nice pike up close to the dam. i tossed a 3" gulp shiner and her, and she would go crazy for it when it hit the water. very aggressive for sure. hooked her, but her teeth cut through my line with ease (only 6lb test, UL gear)

I'm heading up to Ottertail Lake next week. Anybody willing to share some tips as to what type of bait, presentation, location and depth? Any information would be much appreciated.

I know some of the tourny boats last weekend did good with shiners yet. Myself, I had good luck with a crawler and lindy rig on Tues. eve. in 15-25 fow.

The Gils and Bass were biting well in the shallows last weekend on Silver. We picked up a few "true" 17" bass. In another lake I had a musky grab a 17" walleye - that was exciting. I went back with an 8" soft bait, but never saw the ski' again. I tried trolling cranks for walleye's, drifting with a lindy rig and some vertical jigging on Silver but no walleye bites at all

We were up this past week on O.T. and our best luck was on a deep hump that came up to 30 feet on leeches. It was very sunny with little wind but once we found them we worked that area very slow.

Holy moly, I just looked up the "live pointer" lures and at $20.00 a piece you might try offering some kind of reward.

Jake,

If it helps, the next time they lower the water level look for some of 15-20 #5 Crawfish Rattlin' Fat Raps and Rattlin' Raps I lost above and below the dam over the last 20 years. They are all yours. ;-) Joe Z.

I've lost a few of those as well Joe. Excellent bait for the smallies and I even caught a 6 lb channel on one too.

joe- wont be going back there anytime soon. my dad wants to catch cats, and we couldnt get any of any size. we got one about 3lbs in those 2 trips.

so he lost all faith in orwell. and i would really have to twist his arm to get him to go back

Try below and downstream from Pisgah Dam in Fergus Falls for Cats. They won't be 20+ like north of Wahp/Breck but respectable. Chicken Livers. Joe Z

Heading to the Virginia Mn area Ice fishing in a few weeks. I've fished the Duluth area most of my life but finally spreading out a bit.
Not hoping to get anyones "spot".
How are ice conditions? Anywhere to stay away from safety wise?
Any dead lakes that would be a waste of my time on a limited trip?
      Thanks yall

Was planning to put the new ice saw to use and do some sight fishing but curious how the conditions are?

      Thanks!

Fished hard for 3 days on Big Stone Lake and the bite was very, very tough.  The nice Marked a lot of fish and just couldn't get them to bite. Did manage some dandy perch and trophy gills,(released) but not a lot of numbers.  Saturday late afternoon we stuck 3 gills over 10".  My nephew had one that was at least 10 1/2" but released it before I could measure or get a pic.  Sunday we had 2 more at or just under 10".  Had to downsize to get bit.  Did catch a couple on set lines with fatheads.   Spoons didn't get bit often.  Tungsten jigs or flies tipped with plastics or eurolarvae got most of the action.
Found fish in or near basin areas near shallower rock structures.  We would drill, drill and then drill some more.  Once we found fish we would make smaller moves or wait out schools cruising through the area. Travel conditions were excellent.   Just had to watch out for the occassional drift or old plowed road.  Here are a few pics from the weekend.

Fished several NE Wright county lakes got on some really nice bass with panfish jigs the smaller the better. Had a flurry for about half hour many largemouth caught. Then did a night bite for the crappies It really pays to move around. Also learned from some on the MInnow or not to minnow thread to upsize I used a small forage minnow spoon with 3-4 spikes that really was the ticket. Thanks all for the help everyone. The fish seem to me to be just starting to move a bit shallower with the warmer weather coming this weekend it should just get better. Most of the fish were in 12-17 feet of water.

On the south end...  Some big walleyes caught this week up at Lake of the Woods along with eaters and saugers.  Good fishing still happening 16 - 22 miles out on the ice and most reports are good.  Ice conditions on LOW remain excellent at around 30 inches where most are fishing.  Best colors vary but on sunny days gold has been consistent.  On cloudy days, glow pink, green, orange and chartreuse good colors.  Don't be afraid to downsize presentation if fish are not active.  Small spoon with a minnow head.  A plain hook with a small minnow can be very effective.  Electronics helping anglers catch suspended walleyes.  Pike are getting more active and anglers reporting good success.
On the Rainy River...   The river is frozen over with snowmobile traffic on marked trail.  Some reports of local anglers catching a few walleyes in the river but most anglers hitting the lake.  Extra caution is always needed on the river, especially with higher current this year.  Thin ice around the International Bridge in Baudette.  Work through resort or know ice conditions if ice fishing the river as ice thickness varies.
Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing in full swing up at the Angle.  Resorts in 26 - 32' of water.  A mix of walleyes and saugers with some jumbo perch and pike in the mix.  The snowmobile trails from south shore to Angle in great shape.  Jigging with a bait with rattles has helped to pull in walleyes.  Fish houses on the ice through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14.

Member only ...looking for some reports near Wright county area or even west and north of there.  Been fishing this small lake out near South Haven and been crushing 9.5 inch gills  and 12 inch crappies the last 2 months.  Went back last week after take a 2 week break and everything was suspended and tiny. Before everything was just off weeds deep and coming from botto....not sure what happened  but fish were loaded like a xmas on the flx28, maybe oxygen levels? First pic of the crappies took me and friend 1 hour and 20 holes... so much fun!!!!

💥💥💥Found a portable left on the ice 2/15/20 at about 4 30pm. Had been there over a day as it had snow drifted around it. If you can describe it, and where on the lake I would love nothing more to get it back to the owner. Thanks!!!!💥💥💥

From where it is, I would guess ATT if anything.     https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html (zoom in and enter zip code for that area.  Cook is 55723 so that's a start.  Looks like ATT has coverage.  Tmobile roams on ATT.

Heard browns fight but nothing like steelhead. took probably 20 min to get mine in.
    • bigpunfun
I've personally spent years catching crappie with minnows.  Usually I will drop a dead stick with a minnow and jig another line with a waxie. Have similar luck on each rod. Always depends on what the fish want of course. I like to give them the most options.

Always looks like a blast with those jawjackers or auto fisherman.  Fighting those big Browns and steelhead on a short rod through a hole in the ice on light line would be fun.
