Minnesota River Fishing Report

Its too bad I wasn't in the contest then! Sounds like it was a really well run event. Can't thank the guys enough who put in the extra effort for those fish.

You take 169 south to 101 and go west into shakopee. you drive past valley fair and through town(don't speed at all) untill 101 goes north across the river. The launch is on the right side across the river.

I have been recently trying to catch mine, but mostly buy from him. He said its been busy with the contest coming up. I think you might get similar results in the area. It has been a tough year for minnows I have seen several shops out and had trouble getting the big ones.

I went out last night and didn't land a fish. I had three really, really short runs. By the time I grabbed my rod the fish was off and so was the bait. I was shore fishing in Jordan.

I was out last night too and we were having the same problem with the short runs. I think some of the runs were gar seeing we actually hooked a nice one and got it in, but I know we had some cats that would just hit it, pick it up, and drop it by the time we could do anything. we fished from 9:15-2:00 and things really paid off late. 1 very large softshell turtle, 1 4lbish gar, 1 7lb channel, and then the hog you see below!! We got it at about 12:45 on a huge piece of creek chub cut bait.

I let prior lake know a couple weeks ago that this weekend was the contest and they should stock up on extra... So if anyone needs bait go to the prior lake bait shop

I lucked out. I fished all day in several lakes for bullies. However I managed to go back to a spot I tried earlier that day early this evening and pulled out 14 bullies and a large sucker in under an hour. Gonna hit it one more time tomorrow and see if I do well.

I fished out of Shakopee last night, however I went north down the river bend instead of the usual south. Was using nothing but cut bait and must of gone through 10 suckers. Was very successful if I wasnt looking for cats. Pulled in 6 gar instead, almost lost a finger with one haha. Was out from about 9-1:30 and there was still 2 boats out when I headed in. I think the rain we finally got here helped, I noticed the water level had risen maybe an inch or 2. everything helps at this point!

Made it out last night for the first time in 3 weeks on the river. I haven't seen it this low before. It made launching a little more interesting that's for sure. Went upstream and crossed paths with a barge that took up most of the channel with the exception of about 10ft on the inside bend. Watched a boat pulling a wakeboarder cruise through full of kids which was just plain crazy. crazy Barge didn't appear to be going anywhere soon so we headed downstream. One run and the big goose egg for the evening. Good luck and stay safe this weekend guys.

Jim Buck was that you at the 35W launch with the new boat of your buddies with the WI sticker? Around 7:15...........

It was a busy night on the river for the barges, radio helps.

After radioing him, he let me squeak by.

LFC, yes sir. I kind of thought you looked familiar. Good running in to you. He just picked her up this week so we had to get it on the water. I think the radio is on the list...I know mine has saved my arse a few times before.

Is anyone else really enjoying the new banner ads? blush

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
