2020 Detroit Lakes-Pelican Rapids Fishing Reports - Lake Conditions

Recommended Posts

Great trip Gutz, i love when the annual trip with the guys or family pays off. Seems to put me in a good mood the rest of the season and gets me more excited every year.

Wish my annual stay on the ice trip had the same success.

Also great work on the selective harvest.

Been on the waters of DL lately looking for scar, know where she is at just cant get a good hookset. LOL. Having fun with this once again. Muskies are coming in the usual haunts according to locals, quick strikes are working put the jakes and DCG's away. Rumor has it little put out a 51 last night by the coots? By the way the coots are the little black ducks and when you get the ski's they will (word usage) black feathers all over your boat. Willing to fish with anyone that will keep their mouth shut over my haunts..... [email protected]

Fished South Lida last night. Not very good. I did mark some fish, but only caught perch. I was looking for crappies and in the spots I usually find them, I marked absolutely nothing.

Sounds like my morning on Sallie today! I think the walleyes had their jaws wired shut and had invisible skin on. I hardly marked any fish. They must be in the weeds.

We stay at the Hideaway resort on the north end.

We stayed a Wakanda for many years as well untill they sold out to developers. That place will produce walleyes until you can't break ice into the bay.

Talk to Marge or Al at the hideaway make sure they leave a dock out for ya.

that lake can be tough to fish eyes through the ice cause it's so clear but I have done well on the rock wall up on the north end in the same bay that the resort is in.

I had to put a camera down finally and get to the spot on the spot. this rock wall down there looks like landscapers built it. and once you see it you'll see what I mean. 18FOW

Fishgutz, you ever make it out in the evenings and the first few hours of dark? Just asking as its the only time I can get out with class right now. Thanks

Fished Big Cormorant today. All I got was some northerns and bass. Looked deep and in the weeds, used crawlers and minnows, all I can say is that sure is a nice new boat ramp.

And since when did we decide to send fighter planes over to Wisconsin? I think we can beat the Packers without softening them up first.

They flew over a couple of times.

Cool pics Cicada.

I hit a local lake in the brush with my bro this past weekend. We caught some small walleyes, a couple pig northerns, and some MONSTER slabs. Biggest being a 15" 2 pounds on the dot, it's in my freezer and will make it's way to the taxi very soon. The water temps were 41 degrees. Found the fish in 16 fow!! Some crappies we caught were suspended but most were along the edge of the deepest hole in the lake. Check the pic out of this northern.... what a pig.

Very cool, Leech. Got out with my brother today on Lida. Got a mess of walleyes, under the slot, and will finally have a little fish fry. 27-30 fow with shiners or crawlers.

You dog you Leech, I actually took half the day off yesterday. I should have went fishing instead of pulling carpet out of my house frown One of the lakes we hit??? Waiting impatiently for early ice, we'll have to make swiss cheese out of a couple of those lakes.

ok fishgutz, well you know what my next question is.... Where in the heck is Island Lake at? How far away is it? If its further than 2 1/2 hours away from Fargo, then I'll just go to Devils!

Swiss cheese for sure!! Early ice is the best out there for slab action. Dang I can't wait, but in the mean time we'll definitely have to get out again.

Hit the lake while everyone was hunting on Saturday. My buddy caught this one with a wally diver. 27 inches long but the girth was a fat 17 inches. The pic doesn't do it justice. Of course we put her back. Weighed in on the digital scale at 9 pounds, 12 ounces. My buddies biggest walleye to date!

tried little and Big DL sunday. Nothing. Had 2 good musky follows but know hook ups. Caught 2 small perch and one 8" walleye under the bridge before I left. I then procedded to break my prop when my the power tilt failed and motor was locked down when I was trailering it. Not untill I got back to town when I discoverd that there is a release switch on trim/tilt pumps. Little late but found it none the less.

Fished Lida today. Went to Pelican to get bait because they had silver shiners a week and a half ago. None today, so I used small suckers in 18-23 feet of water. Had a few misses and got two walleyes in the boat. Over the years, there have been very few November 14ths I could fish in a boat. Kind of fun. Quit early due to rumors of a free supper and trip to the casino tonight.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
