about a week late,, but ; hit a lake about 15-20 miles from GM on Sat and did quite well for lakers. Limited out too quick, wish we had let some of the smaller ones go.

Sunday- fished some new water, not much. That night, went for walleyes. Ended up coming in with alot of slush, and alot of work moving sleds/ etc. to get in. all for a 11" eye. Not worth it. Stay on the deeper lakes, as they seem to have froze over later to prevent all the snow and slush that accumulated on the shallower lakes that iced up earlier.

The lake that we fished for eyes is ruined for winter. Totally a mess when it comes to moving anything, even walking in it was a workout.

Might be a good opener lake thou,, in JUne with the way the weather is going.

The slush and snow are deep but the willys are looking. you can get a few in the half hour bite but there 15-18 inch avg with alot of smaller fish. Every now and then a bigger fish comes through and the possibility is real for a 3 or four pound fish. the last few days have slowed the eyes down and alot of them are slow to come light to bite if at all. Last night I saw nine fish and missed 2. Can you guess the lake?? Good cuz im not saying lol

Fished Island Res. the other day and got four waldo's. All were in the 12-15 in. range. Oh ya, and I was only out there for a hour and a half and only fished maybe an hr. due to moving around to find my spot. All in all not too bad of an outing...

Howdy,

Will be fishing out of Sawbill in June, seeing what helpful info I can find on a handfull of lakes: Temperance, Little Sag, Frost, Pan, Malberg, Koma and Lake Polly. Any success? What good in early June? Thanks!

Gunflint Trail BWCA sure has been producing! Just before we got the bad weather last night and today i managed to hook into three really nice lakers!!! Patterns did not seem to affect the fish because they were extremely aggresive!

-First One 30'' ~9-10lbs

IMG_0203.jpg

Next one was bigger at 36'' ~12lbs

Lakers007.jpg

Finally having a decent Day and not falling through the ice, thats what im talking about! Ill be out again prob tuesday or wednesday maybe sooner to the same spot and hopefully more lakers!

Nice fish Ice King. Looks like ya can feed the whole family(a few times). I gotta get out and chase some lakers. Is it bog stain that causes such a dark coloration? I've caught lakers on Gunflint Lake and they looked just like that.

Splakeshaker, it's not bog stain that causes the color. Or at least not only that. I've caught lakers on Burntside, which is very clear and unstained except for a few of the bays, that were nearly black. Interestingly, the only ones that dark were over 6-8 pounds. All of the smaller fish I've caught on Bside were lighter than that.

Ice King, really nice lakers. Did you weigh that 36-inch fish?

Yea steve she was about 12 pounds(my scales a little chinsy). It was a blast though! Probably ties for first place for funnest fish to catch with spring run steelies on the shore. Ill be out again for sure this week and hope to get some more...

I caught this one on Lower Manitou. That lake is almost gin clear, no bog stain at all and this fish was almost as dark as night.

Yeah, lake trout are kinda' funny like that. Maybe it's similar to how a smallmouth bass is chameleon like, they change color with their surroundings. I've caught lakers out of superior and greenwood that were light silvery gray, and then out of gunflint or grindstone they were dark brown. Kinda' cool.

Pretty cool. I was just surprised to see them so dark. I guess I was expecting a lighter color. Thanks for the input.

Ice_King, I recognize where you were staying and fishing. I'll be up there in a couple weeks. Were you out on the main part of the lake? Was there any slush in the big wide open areas? Looks like a couple nice fish, congrats!

Yea fishermn i dont stay there i actually work there so... From what ive heard over the weekend and seen fishing been slow all the way into canada and sag/saganagons. Plan on water and slush if we dont get a deep deep cold freeze cause we are still hitting deep slush even today. Snow helped the main trails and the corridor alot but sleds are the only way. I plan on doing some fishing for lakers/eyes/whities/ciscoes/burbout/ whatever bites this week/weekend so ill keep all posted up!TTYL

I realize Lake of the woods is definitely more of a day bite but am going up second week of March and will be sleeping in my pop up. Was thinking of fishing during the day in the 30 ft range where most others are and then moving up shallower on structure in hope of picking up a few overnight? Also could care less about number of fish, mainly looking for bigger mature fish as I don’t keep fish most of the time anyways. This will be my first time there so any help appreciated.

On the south end...  A great week of ice fishing with lots of fish frys.  Good fishing reports, most fishing in 27 - 33' of water.  Ice conditions on LOW remain excellent at around 30 inches where most are fishing.  Use combo of jigging line and deadstick.  Try spoons or lipless crankbaits with rattles to pull fish in.  Pink hook with a minnow on deadstick effective this week.  Some good colors overall, gold, glow, pink, green, orange and chartreuse.  Don't be afraid to downsize presentation on a tough bite day.  Small spoon with a minnow head, wax worm or euro larvae can catch extra fish.  Electronics will catch more fish.  Some nice walleyes showing up suspended.  Pike fishing continues to heat up.  Tip ups and big baits on quick strike rigs  the ticket.
On the Rainy River...   Local anglers catching some walleyes in the river.  Most anglers fishing the lake.  Extra caution is always needed on the river, especially with higher current this year.  Thin ice around the International Bridge in Baudette.  Work through resort or know ice conditions if ice fishing the river as ice thickness varies.
Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing reports good up at the Angle.  Resorts in 26 - 32' of water.  A mix of walleyes and saugers with big jumbo perch and pike in the mix.  The snowmobile trails both across the lake and in the woods are in great shape.  Jigging with a bait with rattles has helped to pull in walleyes.  Fish houses on the ice through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14.

Can I cut the quick connect from the vexilar charger and then cut alligator clips off my lithium charger and switch them with no problems? I know there would be no issue with the alligators on the vex charger. Curious about the lithium with quick connect. The new 20 has the quick connect.

On a lake near Sugar. Got on to some great sunfish they were deeper than I thought 22 feet deep suspended at 14 feet. Nonstop for 2 hours a black tungsten jig worked best I did try plastics for a bit for building up confidence but the fish showed otherwise quickly. Went back to 3 euro worms 4 was to many . Then I got a 10.5 bluegill my first one and wouldn't you know it my phone was about 2 blocks away. So I let her go not going to keep a fish out of water to get a glory picture. Oh well next time. Get out while you can the lakes were good with the warm up but who knows in a couple of weeks. That was on Friday. Drilled a few holes for an older gentleman that just wanted to fish A while I was glad to help out enjoyed chatting with him. Then went out today almost the same thing but unfortunately near a community spot and within 2 hours everyone was out there and a dog peed on my fish house was not happy threw snow on the house cleaned when i got home I left soon after very rude people unfortunately and the fishing died right away oh well.

Having fished this lake from shore in the summer and my daughter also and did real well, I can't figure why ice fishing is so bad. 2 full days and nothing! 3" perch galore. Moved around and had my camera. Didn't see any life forms whatsoever!!!!! Never coming back. Hardly a soul on the lake on a 43 degree.Sat.??? What?????👎👎👎

Heading to the Virginia Mn area Ice fishing in a few weeks. I've fished the Duluth area most of my life but finally spreading out a bit.
Not hoping to get anyones "spot".
How are ice conditions? Anywhere to stay away from safety wise?
Any dead lakes that would be a waste of my time on a limited trip?
      Thanks yall

I'm assuming they planned to get those fish mounted, which leads to a question I've wondered about...can you get a speared pike mounted?  I would assume the holes left by the spear would make it pretty tough, but maybe the taxidermists have some tricks up their sleeve.

Most lakes with muskies still ban spearing.  I personally think Mille Lacs should go back to the way it was for decades.  Just my opinion.   You are probably right.  If they had caught it trolling in soft water, they probably would have done the same.  I don't know.  I personally think that most people spearing know the difference when they see one, but obviously not all of them do.

I fished Friday and Saturday with two guests from work.  We went to the mud both days.  The bite was tough.  Not as many high flyers compared to two weeks ago.  Fish seemed more finicky, some spooked easily while others were just sniffers.  The guides indicated that the bite had softened over the past week as the fish were consuming larvae from a hatch, fishing deeper resulted in a lot of tulibee, shallower were smaller eyes and sauger.    My cabin neighbor spent a day fishing.  He started off in the mud and headed to shallow water around 230pm, as he heard this was the place to be.  They added one to their bag.     I just spoke to another party that moved their house into 16 feet along a sandy break and did really well yesterday 230 to 6pm.     We had fish dinner on Friday night and surprisingly enough, we scratched out one short of our take home limit.  Size-wise, these fish were in the lower range with larger ones being 17s down to 13s.  We also were able to enjoy some slots.  Here are a couple.       The weather was probably the best we have experienced this season, both road and lake-wise.  I am hoping for 4 more weeks of winter, as I have some trips planned between now and mid-March.

Another season of big game fishing has came to a end. Its never been easy for me to call it a season as I really have loved  working on the lake. This year because of my car accident I did not get to have that enjoyment.  Yes there 's time where you ask yourself wtf. Have cuss words been used? yes. Fighting mother nature can be so brutal. The only way to have a chance against her is to try and plan ahead, which is easier said then done. The equipment takes a beating. Trying to track down parts for trucks that are pushing 40 years old is always a challenge.  This year our son jonny boy had to step up and take over for me. He got a good taste of the planning it takes to keeps things going forward. He had his moments learning the hard way by trial and err. He did a fantastic job finding fish considering how handcuffed we were as to where we could go. There were numerous comments from new and old customers  how well he took care of them. For me its always been about customer service, repeat business. To know they have carried that on makes me very proud.   I did get to visit a few customers this year but it was very limited as I just did not feel comfortable visiting.  We did recruit Richie to help us to start the season, Jonny  and him sure got along well, which was a blessing.  He had to head home  the end of janurary. Our grand daughter Ashley stepped up as she said "Jonny boy took her under his wing". They sure had fun working and fishing together.  She sure enjoyed visiting our customers. She even learned how to pull a house out of its spot and tow one across the lake.  She also has a passion to fish, spending numerous nights on the lake. It is a treat having her here with our great grand son Bentlee. Bentlee hanging out with his mom and great uncle John on the lake makes him a 7 generation here on the shores of upper red lake.  The final weekend of fishing report was not to bad. Phil and his 2 buddies were in montana, they went home with 12 plus missed plenty of fish.  I spent time in old Minnesota before, during and after wayne and pauls visit. I fished hard the last week Jigging a orange chubby darter. I think I landed  at least 12 fish. If they did not hit the lure they hit  a set line.  Wayne and Paul went home with 6 but should of had more as they also lost and missed fish.  I spent sunday afternoon out there and landed 3 nice fish before packing it in.  Florida had Ed and his wife Pat they did not do that well. Ed said he marked a lot of fish but could not get them to bite. They did go home with a couple.  Dan was in California with his daughter Anna. They just fished for the day. She did get to catch her first walleye before packing it in.  Rick, his brother Mike and young one Joe? fished in Colorado .The first night on a new spot was not good so Ashley and Jonnny moved them Saturday afternoon. I think they had some better action but they pulled out early sunday morning.  North Dakota was a no show so Ashley and Jonny boy got to spend the last weekend on the lake where they also caught and missed some fish.   All the houses are now getting staged to comer to shore.  Jonnny has plans to look for the mother load of  the elusive yet still catchable upper red lake crappie. The plan will be sleds and portables. Our crappie get together is still in the planning. I expect a few of the guys to make it up as the snow melts. I would love to get out there and wet a line, just not sure if I can bounce on a sled, time will tell.  I owe such a huge thank you for all the help I received this year. It was truly amazing. I can never thank people enough for there generosity . Again thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I hope to have a few more fishing reports before the ice melts on such a grand lake
