BoxMn : Which lake were you seeing your Crappies? If you were on the WFC it seemed like the crappies moved deeper - I was in loon last week and picked up a few stragglers shallow.

Sorry, missed this RockBass. We are not on the chain, just a small lake.

Was able to dodge the rain on Saturday, and the boys caught a nice SMB and a decent pike at 29", and a decent amount of small LMB. Most Saturday morning early (before 8 am), and on Powerbait crawfish. They are all still swimming, but we did keep a 3 person limit of real small pike for pickling - they were all trolling spinnerbaits over the emerging weeds.

I went to the dock Sunday once the sun came out and to my surprise the crappies are smacking good again. Just on tiny white tubes, and just about every cast. Water temp was 70.x in morning, up to 73.5 in afternoon.

Coming up to Breezy next week and wondering what the bite is. Looking for info on Pelican or Gull area. Bringing the family but planning to fish mornings while family sleeps. I was thinking of exploring Whitefish for a change. PM me if you want. Thanks.

Bite is good on most lakes. Pelican is pretty good right now. Raps and jigs will pull fish all day long about 15 to 20 feet. Got my limit today between the 2nd and 7th ining of the twins game.

good luck

Finding a few eyes on whitefish chain. Still can't seem to find a big school stacked up. Weed growth is behind at least three weeks.

So far the rock bass are going crazy but no eyes yet. I am going to try again in the morning. I may have to go Bass fishing or crappie fishing if I cant turn it around...lol.

Thanks for the tip Traxxx. I was on the water by 5:30 and only saw 1 18" caught. I couldn't get a bite so I think I may have to try a different lake. Talked to some others and didn't here much better results. I might have to give Whitefish a try although I never fished it before. The worst part is that I forgot my lake maps at home...lol.

Met Al Linder walking down the street in Nisswa yesterday at the town celebration. Got to shake his hand and thank him for all the stuff I learned about walleye fishing over the years. Wanted to pick his brain about the walleye bite, but decided to respect his privacy. It was pretty cool to meet on of my idols though!

Going to be at breezy this weekend. What is the good word on pelican? We have struggled to catch walleyes there. How about smallmouth.

Doug,

From what I've heard Pelican has been a bit hard for walleyes, as for Smallies......I don't think they are in there, or if they aren't not that many.

plus 1 on walleyes being lackluster. never caught a smallie in about 300 trips in last 7 years, largemouths however are biting good on deep weedlines during day and shallower in low light times.

good luck

There's a few smallies in Pelican but not many. A couple big ones were weighed in during a tournament a few weeks back. As for walleye look for them just off the deep weed edge. Lindy rig with a floater and leech or a slip bobber and leech has been working. Bass love leeches.

Watch your electronics and fish where you are seeing fish. 19'-27' is a good starting depth

How deep are the walleyes?

I have been finding them in 28' to 33'.

Traxxx...when you are lindy rigging with a float & leech are you hooking onto a bottom bouncer or just a 1/4 oz. weight? Also what speed do you go for...are you going as slow as possible or a little faster to get the leech moving through the water?

Thanks

Personally I know if fishing that 20-30' range I'm using at least a 1/2oz weight possibly even a 5/8 but I could just be weird like that.

We did relatively well on WFC over the weekend. Lindys in 20-30 ft a few walleyes here and there. Leeches were best. They were sold out of big leaches all over up there. We also had good action on large creek chubs, but had a hard time landing fish.

Fished big body of North Long Sunday. Got a late start for fishing eyes in the morning at 9am. Set up a ways from a sharp break in a 35 ft basin. Had a school of walleye come in after 30 minutes and caught 3 small ones quick. Were fishing with rattlin flyer and rainbow hooked behind the dorsal. Fished this spot until 11:30 with only one looker. Decided to move to 371 bay. Wind was brutal!! Marked fish in 10ft of water but couldn't get to commit. Left early. Would really like to try the first spot early in the season though, I think it would produce some quality fishing.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
