It blew pretty good but Blackduck area took the brunt of the storm. No trees down in our area but we were watching close. I have no fishing reports as my motor broke down on me so I got a whole 1/2 hour of fishing in. Glad you weathered the storm OK Drake.

Found the walleye this weekend with most fish caught in the 10-12 foot range. Morning, night, mid-day, pre-front, post-front, the action was pretty steady... lots of small fish though. The bigger fish were deeper off the edges but were pretty tight lipped. Biggest was a fat 25.

All on leeches or crawlers.

Thanks Dave. Have been out of town for two weeks for emergency; can't wait to get back home and get out to Blackduck for the walleye bite! Looks like the bear hunters have been doing pretty good in the area; should get home tomorrow to find out the latest scoop on how the fishing went for our guests and friends this week.

Hope everyone is out enjoying this beautiful fall weekend. Our guests are either out grouse hunting or on the lakes for fishing. The fall colors are really starting to show, but there is still a lot of ground coverage. One hunter was out yesterday morning and said he was able to flush ten birds and shot a couple (just enough for a meal on the grill). The winds and the drizzle this week made fishing a little tougher to be out on the lake, but Upper Red has continued to give up nice walleye; one of our bass fishermen was really pleased with the catch & release he was able to do of the good size bass; and the sunnies being reeled in from the different lakes in the area have been really nice sized. Haven't been out on Blackduck lately, but they did put a new public access in recently! It's over on the southwest side (near Fontenelle), nice!!

The last week we have been experiencing some warmer than normal temps; normal for up here this time of year is mid 50's; today we got to 79 but it looks like by Saturday we are going to be turning towards normal. What a fantastic time of year to be up here in this area; the fall colors are really popping and our hunters are saying it's so pretty out in the woods, although there is still quite a bit of coverage. Just came in from the picnic area & was talking to two of our grouse hunters. One said he flushed 19 birds yesterday in a little over 3 hours and brought back his limit of woodcock; the other hunter said he flushed 21 & brought back his limit of grouse; they both said Sunday was a slower day, with just a couple of birds. But they grilled them up and have had fresh dinner! Surprisingly there have been very few anglers up-best time of year to be out on the lake for the walleye & pannies! Last week Johnny P. did a guide trip for a couple of our guests and they were really pleased with the walleye, bass and especially the sunfish (keeping those in the 8 to 10" range but they said they even threw a couple back that were even larger). But definitely the perfect time of year to be up here and enjoying all the area has to offer

Deer hunting season is winding down; although the numbers seem down this year, we have seen some nice ones come through here, a few good size does and the largest buck was a 9 pointer. As deer winds down that gets everyone starting to think about ice fishing! We did have some really cold temps that started a thin layer of ice on the lakes (but not enough to be safely fishing on, even the small ponds weren't froze enough), then the warmer above average temps came in, with the wind and that took care of that. Today's high shows 42, but the cooling trend is starting-the 10 day forecast showing highs ranging from 9 on Saturday to 30 on Sunday & Monday, and with the winds & snowfall you know that can damage early ice.

REMEMBER: DNR Guidelines for Walking is 4 inches of new clear ice, so let's play it safe!

Hope everyone had a great hunting season! Now it's time to start gearing up for ice fishing!! Love these temps the last few days, a couple nights below 0, at midnight it is currently 18 with a windchill making it 1. The ten day shows highs in the teens to mid 20's & lows in the single digits to mid teens; now to keep the snow at bay & the winds down. We did have our first ice fishermen in yesterday; they hit Upper Red Lake & limited out on walleye in 6' and were measuring ice at 4". Westwind on Upper Red reported 5 to 7" of ice. Don't know how thick it is on Blackduck or the other area lakes-with it being early folks are playing it pretty safe. Remember, now on Blackduck Lake there are TWO public accesses smile Just another reminder, the DNR Guidelines for Minimum Ice Thickness for new clear ice is Walking=4"; Snowmobile or ATV=5"; Car or Small pickup 8 to 12" and 12-15" for medium Trucks. If it keeps it up like it's going I know our gang coming in for their annual ice fishing trip the first weekend in December will have no worries about getting out on the lake-let's hope the weather keeps cooperating!

Hey Johnny, actually haven't made it out to the Duck yet (was enjoying some warm weather down south for a week & just been crazy since I got back). Then with all the snow last week it pretty much postponed our big ice fishing kick off weekend, so this weekend is the one where we really kick things off with guests coming in for fishing. Talking to some of my local friends that have made it out they have just been hitting Red where they said the slush caused by the snow was firming up good from this artic blast we've had (had some below 0 highs & last night showed a low of -30!) and they were finding ice on Red in the 10 to 13" range, with the better walleye bite in 8 to 9' depths. Today we've got a heat wave (11) with single digit highs through the weekend and nights below 0, and only a 10-30% chance of snow in the forecast so hopefully we'll get some pre Christmas fishing done & see how everyone does this weekend as they hit the different lakes in the area.

What depth should a guy focus on to target Gills? I have a couple lakes in mind in the Blackduck area. They are fairly big lakes.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately; between the chaos of the holidays & some major technical difficulties it's been difficult. The computer has been a real hit or miss thing for the last 3 weeks, with more miss than hit (this is the 6th time to type this this afternoon! Time for a new computer so this one can go in the snowbank!)

The extreme cold hasn't stopped folks from hitting the ice & reeling in the fish. Upper Red Lake is where the majority are going for walleye & doing pretty well-although with the change in the temp & pressure they are finding one day can be slow and the next they are getting limits & doing a lot of catch & release. Most have gone out of the southshore, some fishing just a couple miles out while others went out to center bar; and others going out of Westwind (which seemed to have a better afternoon than evening bite), & fishing away from the crowds. Ice is ranging from 14 to 16" with a few finding some spots at 12"; one day a dead stick was the best, the next jigging. The best producer so far continues to be gold (the gold Swedish pimple has been working well the last couple of weeks-topped with a minnow head or golden). One reminder, the slower traffic on the lakes is the best, some folks have noticed a lot of people zipping down the roads. The smaller lakes in the area are starting to get hit more for panfish; and our guests said travel on the wheelers has been really good. Look to the 15 to 18' depths for the pannies, and have been getting some really nice sizers-crappies have been 12-13" & sunnies 9 to 10". But folks are just now hitting the smaller lakes so not a whole lot of reports, the only one that has been really slow the past few days is Plantangenet.

A little quiet starting the week off (in large part to these subzero temps) although we did have a few folks venture up to do some ice fishing over the weekend. Our anglers hit Upper Red Lake, finding Friday being pretty slow, at least for our folks & attributing that to the front coming in and the change of pressure), but Saturday the bite improved; although not tons of fish but enough for several limits. One problem was the ability to move around on the ice; with more than 20 below everyone picked a spot and just stayed..no moving around. Fortunately, the temps are suppose to break and start getting warmer with Thursday the high being 14 and Friday through Sunday showing highs near 30...much better to hit the lake & move around!

Last weekend started off pretty slow, with the winds being so strong and blowing that most of our folks weren't able to hit the ice on Thursday due to low visibility; but they definitely made up for it the rest of the weekend. We were happy to welcome back our Air Force group (thank you for your service!!) and their large group hit several lakes in the area. Upper Red continued to produce walleye, with a very good afternoon (12:30-3:30 bite, gold continuing to be the color the walleyes preferred). The smaller lakes in the area also produced very nice 12" crappies, some sunfish, walleye and the northern pike continue to keep everyone active. The crappie bite has continued to be in the same time frame...slow in the mornings and then kicking in right around 4pm.

The temps have continued to be sub zero (today's high was a whopping 0), but it's showing 29 Above Friday and 5 to 10 above for Saturday-going to feel like summer! But those temps will help to be able to move around on the ice!

What a crazy winter this has been; the continual subzero temperatures has had an effect on the fishing up in the area. The fishing has continued to be actually pretty good, we've seen the really nice panfish (crappies being brought back in the 10-12" range with a better bite starting in the later afternoon in the deeper waters-around 4 as well as sunfish in the 8 to 10" range). Most of our folks are still going to Upper Red for the walleye bite; and most of our folks are back by dark with their limits (silver still being the color that has provided the most activity), although more and more are hitting Blackduck, working the bars in the late afternoon/early evening. But now that the temperatures are heading back to normal range (temps going into the mid 20's and even 30's next week) we can finally get some good fishing time in, the cold & winds have made it difficult to move around much on the lakes-everyone's just set up & stay put & warm- but as we move into the typical perch and panfish season the warmer weather will help to do some moving around on the lake!

Hey 1960, Steve told me about the ride LOL. With the cold temps (is winter ever going to end!) this week, it's been a pretty quiet week around here, just a few up for fishing. The end of walleye season last weekend had our folks hitting Blackduck & some of the smaller lakes in the area for panfishing since it was so windy on Upper Red. There were a lot of really nice panfish that were caught; with the groups fishing on Blackduck reeling in some really nice crappies.

The our group that was here the first of the week did a decent job of catching crappies, sunfish and some perch (photos were added to our fb site-link is below-click Like on the page so you can see the latest photos each tine it gets updated!) & they were fairly excited about the catch considering the temps & winds had them setting up & staying put; no hole hopping. Looks like the next couple of days the temps are still going to remain way below average but my Wed it's showing 20 and Thursday 30; so we can get into the March panfishing cycle finally. We did have a cancellation for a group of rooms next weekend, and the big room opened up for the 21st weekend (so if you were one of those that were looking but we were full at the time you called give us a call back & we'll set you up)

Also, just a reminder-time to get the fishing license renewed!

The weather isn't the only thing warming up (yesterday was 44!); so is the fishing. With the sub zero temperatures gone anglers are able to get out on the lakes and do some moving around and are being rewarded for it. Saturday was a very good day on the ice; with Blackduck Lake giving out really good numbers of perch ranging from 9 to 12" and the smaller lakes in the area producing quality sunfish and crappies. A crappie bite has continued for most on Blackduck Lake suspended in the deeper waters, and on Blackduck as well as the other lakes in the area the crappie bite is usually very early in the morning, and the most productive from 4:30 on. The sunfish bite has been in the 13-18' depths on lakes such as Gull Lake; and aside from Blackduck Lake for the perch Round Lake is starting to kick in. Today we have a windy one out there, and with that northwest wind we've got some cold temps coming in (tonight is back to 0) but wow, Thursday is in the mid 40's! Followed by a cool down to the 20's till next week when we are back in the 30's.

The panfishing in the Blackduck area continues to go very well; (did just add a couple of photos to our fbook page). The temps heated up to a whopping 54 on Thursday which helped with the snow drifts on the lakes, and now with a gradual cool down at night (tonight is suppose to be -9) it is helping to lessen the standing water on the lakes. FYI, upcoming forecast is a little cooler than average with the highs in the mid to upper 30's and lows in the teens. Our anglers have been saying they are getting around on the ice with ease and more and more lakes are being hit for this great early spring bite, and the fishing pattern continues to be the same as last week with some nice size crappies as shown in the photos starting to bite either early in the mornings or in the afternoon starting around 5 pm;, nice size perch & sunfish are also being reeled in.

Pretty good weekend so far up in the Blackduck area and travel on the ice is good. On Blackduck Lake the main public access has some drifted spots, but those who are using the public access on the southside of the lake (off Hines road) are having an easy time getting around, and just talked to another set of anglers this morning who have been hitting the smaller lakes & they said the travel has been good. Ice is still really thick and everyone up has had their extensions on. Perch are coming off Blackduck in pretty good numbers, in a variety of sizes, so doing some weeding out of the smaller ones. The other lakes in the area are producing some sunfish and crappies, with the crappies kicking in as evening rolls in.

Yes! The kick off summer long weekend! I'm sure you have all heard that Upper Red Lake is super HOT right now; and that is where the vast majority of our guests are going to fish. Even the other day when the winds were blowing waves over the boats our anglers were still getting limits & today they said it was like glass but still no problems limiting out; most fishing in the 6.5' to 7' depths and finding jigging or throwing cranks are all working. Have only heard of a rare crappie being reeled in. A few are hitting Blackduck Lake and have found that the evening bite is going well; Dora Lake is also doing well on walleyes, but our folks on Island found it pretty slow. Water temps are averaging 60 degrees, and hopefully with the warmer temps rolling in the lakes will warm just a bit more to get the panfish bite to really start. last week the panfish bite was really slow, today a few crappies were caught mid afternoon & the anglers are thinking the bite is about to kick in.

Have a safe & Happy Memorial weekend

I can honestly say this has been a pretty fantastic week up in the Blackduck area. We've been really busy and our anglers have been definitely been keeping the fish cleaning room busy. Upper Red Lake has still been a lake folks are hitting for the walleye with limits being brought back & a lot of fun doing catch and release(and a couple of really nice size northerns were caught and released) and the sheephead have also been pretty hungry too. Blackduck Lake has had a pretty strong evening bite with the majority getting limits or near limits. This week has also had anglers spreading out and hitting many of the other lakes in the area (there are so many lakes within 15 miles) and they are bringing back walleye, sunfish (which have turned on nicely, with some smaller ones being thrown back all the way up to 10" sunnies), crappies have still not totally kicked in yet, haven't seen the full limits yet; and our bass fishermen have been really happy; good to see those hitting new to them lakes and coming back saying they have a new favorite lake. One thing you do have to watch in the evening-the state bird (the mosquito) has hatched! But thankfully the last couple of days we are seeing more dragonflys and a 'few' less mosquitos! Hope everyone has a great week!

What was suppose to be another rainy day actually turned around this afternoon to clear skies & sunshine; tomorrow is showing 72 & sunny with a light wind so a great start to the weekend after all the rain yesterday. Fishing in the Blackduck area continues to go very strong and I just added a few more pictures to our fbook site of the latest in fishing). It's not just Upper Red Lake & Blackduck Lake for walleyes putting out limits; but one group of anglers just came in from Island Lake and said they had limits of walleyes & did a ton of catch and release of various sizes, as well as some panfish too & best he'd seen Island Lake in awhile). For this time of year leeches are working the best on lakes such as Blackduck and Island, with most using a spinner or slip bobber fishing. The panfish are also providing a lot of action at the various lakes in the area, with sunnies in the 8 to 10" size and some dandy crappies being kept in the 11-12" range. Also, some folks have been messaging about 4th of July (we do have a few standard rooms left for the long weekend) and when Woodcarvers Festival is-Saturday, July 26th in the City Wayside Rest & the street is also blocked off for the booths

Busy busy, so behind on posting. Fishing continues to do Very well in the area. Blackduck Lake has the fishing contest tomorrow and if things continue to go as they have been it should produce some very nice walleye. For the most part, evening fishing is the most productive on the Duck but don't discount the afternoons as many have been reeling in the nice walleye (mostly leeches with a spinner but some pulling cranks) as well as some keeper perch. Blackduck isn't the only lake for walleye, also look to Island Lake which has had anglers coming back to the fish cleaning room with their limits of legal size walleye & reporting good action of the ones that they had to put back in the lake; and many have reeled in nice walleye while out on the other smaller lakes in the area while targeting walleye. The majority are spending their mornings & afternoons out on the the smaller lakes in the area and reeling in jumbo sunfish (about to add a pic of Andrew and Charles who reeled in the 9 to 10.5" sunfish-keeping about 17 & throwing back all the females which were numerous), with the crappies hitting more in the later afternoon hours. There are so many good lakes in the area; it's great to see everyone spreading out and hitting different ones. See what happens over the weekend, more rain in the forecast which we've had enough of lately!

They say time goes by faster as you get older, must be getting pretty old because I can't believe it's Sept. Love the fall time as it brings in guests doing a nice mix of things. The last few days it has been folks up just for a getaway, some up to do some biking on the trails in the forest, some for bear hunting (which was slow-although 2 hunters said they had bear hitting their spots the day before they left) and others fishing. Some of our anglers hit Upper Red Lake which they said it was slow up there, and others were up to try some muskie fishing (Big, Lake Bemidji are good ones to try for that) and the muskie of the day was a 48" that was caught & released. For the walleye fishing a few local friends have hit Blackduck saying the morning bite was the best for them, sporatic during the day and really having to work at it but now that the temps are going to turn to the cooler weather the fall fishing should be kicking in on the Duck. Island Lake did produce very well fishing in the deeper waters (18-25' depths) doing a faster troll(crawlers being what worked the best) with folks getting their limits of keeper size eyes & doing the catch & release of those outside the slot. While temps have been pushing that 80 mark (today high of 78), tomorrow starts the cool down with highs in the 50's & 60's, which will not only start the fall fishing bite but give the hunting & those fall colors a jump start.

Finally...fall fishing is kicking in! I just added another picture to the fb site of walleye fishing at Upper Red which has provided limits of walleyes the last few days (look to the breaks around the 7-10' depths) fishing not only the east side of the lake but also the southside (some pulling shads, others pulling bucktails). Came in from the fish cleaning room about an hour ago talking to a couple of our guests who were out on Blackduck Lake this afternoon and although not limits of walleye they reeled in 8 really nice ones between the two guys. Nice to see the fall walleye bite is kicking in. Had a frost a couple of days ago and starting to see some changes on the trees and the ground coverage, so it's a coming. One thing that is different was to drive down a local dirt road just off 71 to go see someone and about a block down the dirt road saw some grouse! Gotta love the fall!

Another beautiful weekend up north-sun is shining, temps in the mid 50's! The winds have finally calmed down, they were pretty wicked earlier in the week making it harder for the grouse hunters-those windy days had the birds hanging pretty tight in the popples, but they are shooting grouse but even more woodcock. The folks who have been up fishing are finding a pretty good walleye bite more so in the early evening hours and fishing in the shallower 8 to 10' depths pulling a lindy. The fall colors are also being enjoyed by folks up taking pictures & looking at the wildlife. Hard to believe deer hunting is right around the corner with the upcoming week is showing temps pushing 60. FYI-We just had a couple of cancellations for next weekend (MEA so long weekend for some) so c'mon up & enjoy the falltime in our area!

Hard to believe that it's time to put the boat away till next spring. The fall fishing season has ended quite well, especially with the walleye bite. Upper Red Lake has been doing very well for us and our guests on the days when the winds aren't blowing; but with deer hunting starting next week it's time for us to get the deer shack ready for our guests. The grouse hunting has varied from group to group; but the majority have gone home with their limits, and now with the reduction in coverage it's much easier. Thanks to our anglers who have made it such a great open water season! Now time to watch for formation of ice!

Fortunately for us the snow storm that impacted most of the state bypassed us! We just have a dusting on the ground from last weekend. Been a few deer in the deer shack, the largest being an 8 point buck so far. Reports are of seeing a lot more does than the bucks. A couple hunters came in and said they were starting to see a thin coat on a couple of the smaller lakes in the area so stopped at Blackduck Lake today to take a couple of pictures, the ice is forming near the access-with a thin layer of ice to the right in that little bay but the rest is open water. Temps have been running with highs in the 20's and lows in the teens, but Thursday they are to start dropping into the single digits. So hopefully we can keep the snow away & the winds died down so the lakes can start developing the ice!

On Friday there was still some open water on Blackduck and the other lakes in the area, but today the lakes have a THIN layer of ice covering them-not enough to go out on the lakes yet. The colder temps have helped, and the next few days the highs are in the teens & the lows around 0, but the winds yesterday (gusts WNW 23-29 mph) didn't help. Some folks have checked the ice on the smaller lakes around here and on Upper Red and were finding 2 to 4" of ice but said there were spots that were definitely much thinner so back to land they went. Let's be safe out there and give it a few more days. DNR Guideline is 4" of new clear ice for walking, and if the temps continue this cold & the winds die down that may not be much longer, but again, let's be safe-this is a very early ice fishing season. If you are heading to Upper Red check with the access owners what they recommend.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...

A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
