Yea I thought it was great! That's not bad fishin. I drove 4 miles accross the lake on a sled 4 times and you caught more fish than me. Next time I see them I'm gonna stop and have a beer with you.

Have not had much time off the lake to put in a report but here is a rport from the south end Dennys road is open, Nodaks has closed his roads other than to his rentals. Walleyes are on the slow side but still picking up a few, perch fishing has been good seeing alot of nice perch and a few big pike. The slush has been bad if it would only freeze back down we should get on some better fishing soon.

I am headed up on wednesday mornin' and ive never been on the lake ive downloaded a map what depth do i need to be in to get the perch. and if the roads going to the "good spots" are ok or will i need a sled? (i have a broken leg and still got the fever)it'll be alot easier to drive the the truck to the spot rather than loading the sleds. crazy

I would suggest going straight to Highbanks. They've had the best roads this season and Kim will give you a good fishing report.

Report for this week the fishing has picked up seeing a good run of walleyes at night and some nice perch during the day. Dennys has 6 miles of roads open that are all in good shape and will be heading out to some humps next week. Here is some pictures of this weeks group from Michigan and a big one I picked up last night.full-26625-5183-009.jpg

Nice walleye, Ryan! Hope the Argo will suit your needs. The Cat is running well and my boys are having a blast with it.

Take a look at your bookings, I was looking at the weekend of 2/18-2/21, Friday through Monday. Would that work for you in one of your sleepers. You have my cell number. Shoot me back a text, when you get time.

Just got back and fished out of highbanks. Fished from late friday to sun noon in a wheel house. Caught 4 pike, 6 eyes(kept 2), 2 pout, 10 perch. Fish were fairly inactive other than the walleyes on sat night would not hesitate to crush your bait. Fishing where you can vs. where you want because of the snow/slush is the difference maker. The weather was not very good for moving around outside the house and walking to spots off the road is a workout. All eyes and most of the perch were caught whithin an hour at prime time just 50 yards from the wheelhouse in a spot I WANTED to fish but couldnt get to because of slush. No eyes caught in the house at all.

Fished from Friday afternoon to Sunday morning. We ended up with about 50 keeper perch with about half of them over 10", 4 pike that we kept, and 8 walleyes kept. We caught about 8 walleyes that were between 20-25" that went back as well as some smaller ones. Were on a hump all by ourselves. Had to use snowmobiles to get to our house as the closest we could get on Highbanks' road was still over a mile away from where my Dad put the houses earlier this year. Heard that Denny's might be plowing a road out there soon though, Not sure if Highbanks is planning to plow down to the humps or not.

I went out of High Banks from 12:00 - 6:00 pm on Saturday. I set up in 19ft of water off a hump and caught 7 keeper perch and a pike. It was pretty cold and I had my dogs with me so I didn't do any moving (not how I usually fish). I had quite a few sniffers come take a look at a multitude of jigs I tried, but all but one of the perch came off a bobbered fat head with a tiny little hook. I lost what I think was a Walleye just at sun down. Given the weather I didn't think I did too bad. The road out of High banks were in fantastic condition (as usual).

Heard some nasty travel reports before it got cold. How are things on the south side of the lake? Probably going to go out of Nodak's.

I dont think Nodaks is even Plowing roads anymore. It nightmare wherever you go. High Banks has a lot of roads out, and there are spots plowed out for sleepers.

Fished out of Denny's today. Got a couple of walleye's, but ended up on some perch that were biting good. Had to pick trough the small ones, but ended up with a few meals worth. Overall a good first trip to Winnie for me. Roads were in good shape and easily passable. Now the tuff part. I haven't seen that much snow on a lake in a long time. We didn't even try using the snowmobile as the slush was all over the place beneath about 2ft of snow, and I didn't want to think about getting stuck in that.

Iceman I'm assuming you mean ravens point not ravens hump. Last week i pulled my permy off the lake from that area with a snow machine and had no trouble. The snow it dence enough to stay on top in most areas. Highbanks had a road that got me within a couple hundred yards of it, which was unexpected and very nice.

My uncles went up to our houses this past weekend and had good success. They said they caught a lot of perch but had to sort through them for the keepers. I think they ended up with around 60 to take home from 9-11 inches. They got their limits of walleyes also with a lot of eyes too big to keep.

What were they using? Must have been superbait.

We fished all last week and only caught 2 walleyes, one of which had to go back.

May as well call it Whitefish Lake.

All using different jigs and colors, catching them on set lines and jigging with minnow heads. They were catching them on just minnow tails or chunks towards the end because they were running out of minnows. Seems like when they're down there they will bite whatever we throw at them.

But our houses are out by the humps and we are the only ones fishing out there. Usually around 3:00 everyone with portables packs up and goes to their "primetime" spots usually leaving us as the only ones within at least a square mile. I'm guessing that plays a big part in it.

  • 2 weeks later...

A buddy and I went out on sat afternoon. Went out to the humps away from everybody else and caught prob 40-50 perch, ended up keeping 30 most of them being 10-11.5" but kept some 9". We were set up around 3pm and the fish were on top in 21' but by 4:30 we were set up in 23' and 25'. Minnow heads seemed to get a little more action but a full minnow caught bigger ones.

Sun decided to try a different hump more for eyes but didnt have any luck. Started out catching some jumbos and once they left we had some nice marks come in and would even get them to come up 3' off bottom but no takers. We would have moved but that wind wasnt very pleasant!

Mobility is key if you have a sled bring it. Find a spot off the beaten path and a guy should do well. Perch were feeding aggressively, eyes were tough to come by but caught a few and had some dandy pike lurking down our holes but only got one in at 32"

Went out of Denny's on our wy back from a Bemidji Fish Trip. We did end up finding the Perch, but had to sort through to keep some. Lot and lots of lookers, some of which I believe were eyes, but hard to say...Did loose a nicer fish. Moved around a bit, and yes it was a very annoying wind, but nevertheless a great weekend of fishing. Bonus was a personal best 27" walleye in the Bemidji area (let her go).

if you have the means to get your self out when you get mired down in slush and broken ice chunks, the go for it.

if you are unfamiliar with the area you are traveling on you will likely get stuck.

the more days(nights) we have with hard freezing temperatures, the better conditions will get, but just for reference, I drove my suzuki sidekick 4x4, light weight and nothing fancy, out across the lake heading for an old road bed and broke through the crusted snow before I reached the road.

I was able to back out thankfully.

I agree, off road might be a little sketchy...wheelers, and sleds may be a better choice for traveling....

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
