Was out today on the flats for a few hours. What a great day! Caught about 30 eyes. Biggest just over 28".

Willy10, what time of day were you out for those few hours? What part of the lake were you fishing? I was out from 1 pm till 10:30 pm yesterday and struggled. Caught 1 20", one keeper, and some rock bass on the rocks in the evening. Worked several mid lake flats during the day and moved into the rocks at about 830. Is the fishing better at sundown out on the mud now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got on the lake around noon and fished until 4pm. Day started with really light bites and smaller fish and moved to a different flat and found more aggressive larger (24+") fish. Most of the fish were on top of the flats.

Fished out of Twin Pines (great resort strongly recomended). We did pretty well on the flats at all times of the day. Most of the fish were on top of the flat in 20-25ft. The crawler with a gold or oarnge spinner was the key in my boat. We also tried the night bite off Garsion reef but only found 12" walleyes, I guess they have moved out of there.

I guess my strategy of workin the outer edges of the flats was wrong since everyone seems to be catchin up on top in 20 - 25 fow. I was graphing more fish on the edge in 30 fow but should have moved up. I was also on garrisons reef on sunday evening & didn't find any eyes. Headin back saturday am to give it another go. Any idea on where they are moving in the evenings now?

Went out of terrys fri-mon caught over 100 eyes on the flats. Best bait was a orange or pink plain hook with a crawler. They all where in 20-28fow

Wishin- I usually go out of terrys and work the outer edges of the flats but Sunday they seemed to be on top. I would have stayed longer but the sun was starting to get to me. I haven't fished at night this year because I haven't had to. Let me know if you would like more information.

Willy10 - This is my first summer on the lake so working the kinks out. Ive been putting in at the public launch just North of St. Albans and fishing flats due West of the launch. I was thinking with the heat and sun they would be deeper. I will mix it up more Saturday. Hoping someone can provide some insight into what they're doing at night. Is it better to stay on the flats or continue going into the rocks?

Finally got up to the big pond yesterday and fished a mid-lake flat from 9-2pm. We ended up boating 12 eye's and kept 5 of those, the rest were in the 22-25" range. Had 1-2 get off as well. We worked the southern tip of a flat and found fish on the top and along the breaks. We worked the 25'-30' depths but didn't see as much in 35' off the flats. The bite slowed down from 12-2, as did the wind. Was a warm day out there.

You guys using leeches or crawlers? I am assuming crawlers.

Sorry, I should have mention leeches on 3-6 foot leaders with single bead and hook. The longer leader seemed to produce a little more.

Steeplechaser,

6-8 foot snell with leech will do the job...guys have been having luck, as well, with spinners/crawlers/bottom bouncers. West wind tomorrow should help you out.

Good luck!

Sounds like a winner...I usually fish out of a smaller 16.5 Lund....I'm not real brave when it comes to big wind.....I provide a detailed report tomorrow PM....any special depths?

Hey steeplechaser...not to worry, they are talking 5-10mph from the west. first try 20-24 fow on the top of the flats...then move to the windward edges as the day moves on.

fished the west side flats out of the casino area this morning with a lindy rig and 8' snell. Excellent bite going on at 9 am and limited out with only five caught. 2-17.5", 1-15", 1-12.5" and one around 21" that went back in the lake. Many others using their nets as well.

Leech or crawler? I'm assuming leech. Heading out tomorrow A.M. Will let you know how it goes. Hopefully the rain holds off for a while.

We hit the Big Pond for attempt #1 yesterday morning...we fished 3 mile, rock pile, curly's and myr mar flats with very modest success...we threw spinners w/crawlers and leeches with beads at them from 7am to 3pm....bite was spotty at best....managed a few (4) for the pan and released one around 21"...seemed like we had more success up on top than on the edges....the day was beautiful and relatively clam, which might have been part of the problem....I've heard that more chop and blustery actually improves he bite.

How big of wave should I expect fishin the west flats with an east wind 7-10 mph. I'll be in a 16' warrior. Or is there good spots to fish/launch on the east side? Thanks

The waves should be 1 ft or so with that wind maybe a little more. If you go out of the east side you and want to hit the flats you will need to go about 5-6 miles out and it will be just as wavy out there as on the west side if not more.

Was out from about 8-2 today on Seguchie. Dragged spinners, rigged, corked. Experimental outing if you will. Caught the first about 15 minutes in, a nice 16 1/2 for the box. After that, no other keepers. Partner caught a 21, 24 and 24 1/2. Saw lots of other boats with their nets out. Box fish was on spinner and crawler. All other fish were on leeches with either a rig or cork. Nice day to be on the water.

Fished most of the day yesterday and had decent results, but not great. We saw lots of fish being caught but only managed a handful in our boat. We tried both leeches and crawlers and leeches seemed to work better. Caught one keeper drifting and 3 fish (2 - 25"ers and 1 - 22") with slip bobbers and a leech, all on the west end flats.

Fished today and the bite was pretty good. Caught a lot of nice fish from 24" to 28" and one almost 29". Could have had a full limit of keepers but all fish went back. A little more wind today then the last couple times I have been out. Hope all are still catching their fish.

Fished Sunday and also found the bite pretty good. Caught over 20 fish for two guys. Tried a couple of the big named flats and got a few. Then tried a small flat that isn't named on any of the maps I have. Fish were stacked up on top. Caught them both on spinners with half a crawler and on Lindy's with leeches. Only caught 3 under 18" with the biggest being 27.5". I hope the bite holds for the 4th of July weekend.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
