I was out of appledoorns on monday and tuesday, and it was slower than slow, is there a word for that? Me and 3 boys, 2-14 yr olds and a 13 yr old. For our efforts we got 4 perch, with 1 stinkin jumbo. The house was nice as was the resort and of course paul was awesome as usual but the fishin was just plain bad. It was swo bad the gal at the bait shop talked me out of 2 scoops of minnows. not a bit on the rattle reel & didnt see a walleye on the camera. That was my 3rd trip up there and the fishin was the same everytime...BAD!! I am done with mille lacs for this winter for sure, and my luck there in the summer hasnt been really any different. The only time i have done well on the pond was with Tony Roach, and of course that cost a pretty penny, but I actually boated a few walleyes. I was on LOTW the week before and had my best ice fishing dauy ever, over 50 walleyes in one day, just me , my buddy put up another 30 that day. I was hoping to get something off the pond but it didnt work out. Went to the pond again to save 4 hours of windshield time each way, should have put the time in i guess. Good luck to everyone else the rest of the year on the big pond.

Sounds like the perch are slow to say the least, Just wondering if anyone has tried using shrimp? It's been the hot bait for the sunnies latley.

Maybe Mille Lacs always just sucked for ice fishing or maybe the last three years that I've gone there have been bad, I don't know. I kinda wish the DNR would have thought up an ingenious plan to eliminate a few billions of tiny perch in the lake, therefore creating a better bite for the sportsmen who are spending thousands on a sport every year with just 5-6 in. perch to show for it. "Maybe that's why they call it fishing and not catching," as they say?

Im planning to go to mille lacs for my first time tomorrow to catch some tulibees. What are some good places to start at? Ive read in here about people catching them on rocky reef and a couple other reefs, but Ive also heard people say to fish over mud? So could anyone give me some hints on where to try and are there any times that they seem to bite best? Thanks

Was up for the Extravaganza. Didn't catch any Jumbos. Was in 32' of water out of Hunters Point. Set up in 10' of water for the night bite down by Isle. We got 1 17" walleye on a gold oddball jig and Fathead minnow. and 1 Jumbo 11" Perch. Slow bite but was marking some fish on the flasher in the shallow water. Also we were catching some smaller perch out in front of Malone Island in 30ft of water. But they were all suspended about 10 feet off of the bottom.

Fished 8 mile saturday. Lots and lots of smaller perch and tullibee in 28-34 FOW. Thanks much to the guy in the F-250 who jumped my friend's Tahoe after he left the radio on and drained the battery. It was a beautiful day to be out even though our biggest perch was only about 10 inches.

Slow bite for us this weekend. Managed to take home 9 perch 10"+ One dandy 13" weighed 1lb 5oz. Would have won the extravaganza. Too bad it was a day late. All the fish we caught in Sunset Bay were puking up Blood Worms. While on the other hand all the fish we caught north of Big Point were puking up Mayfly Larvae. I put on about 75 miles from Saturday morning until about 4pm tonight. And must have drilled 200+ holes in every depth imaginable. Most fish caught on a orange and gold chubby darter, very small one tipped with euro larvae. Thanks to Paul at Appledorns for another fun weekend. The cabins on shore are great for anyone wanting to bring up thier wives or signifigant others. "They get to take showers" Good luck everyone.

P.S. I did get to see that SUV on the Appeldoorns main road flip over. All I can say is he was hauling some serious A** when I saw him lose control and hit the plowed edge of the road. Thats how u turn a fun weekend into an expensive one.

We were up on the west side yesterday, Rocky Reef. Three of us fished for perch from about 8:30 or so, until about 4:00 in the afternoon...we got about 100 perch about the size of the average thumb!

The tully's were hitting and we got a number of those, but no jumbos. We tried every combination we could think of from big to small, worms, minnows, heads, artificals, the results were always the same, nada!

We tried the bug humps and three other distinct spots...nada! I'm sure somebody gets em, but the somebodies weren't us! One of those, "Shoulda been here yesterday." deals.

But hope springs eternal, I'll make 3-4 more trips up there. I gots me a new auger and I have to initiate it...trial by fire!

Hit Isle Bay on Sat, from about 9-3:45 pm. Tried about 20 spots all around and in the middle of the pack. Nothing! I seen 3 guys in one little area catch about 4-5 crappies and that was it! frown Still had about 1 1/2 feet of ice, but after Sunday it will be going fast! Oh well, Turkey huntings coming soon! smile

Fished for perch with my daughter a few hours both sat/sun. (stayed away from Isle bay) we fished aprox. 13" and had almost constant action on small perch. Pretty much what people have been saying all year, lots of action but you have to weed threw the small ones to get a few keepers. Weather was great and we had a good time fishing together. But then I seem to always be happy when we are doing things together!

Got out to the big pond Saturday and Sunday afternoons this weekend, absolutely beautiful weather conditions. Saturday 3 of us limited on jumbos and got about 5 tullibees. Sunday we ended 15 short on perch but got 20 big tullibees from 14-17 inches. Caught 5 walleyes in the 14-16 inch range.

The key was to keep moving and stay on top of the jumbos once you find them. Drilled over 250 holes between the two days. Fished 26 to 30 fow and gold pilkies were the best lure. Wax worms worked better than euros or minnow heads.

One question. We caught a bunch of silvery baitfish about 4" in length. Are they just young ciscoes or are there lake shiners in Mille Lacs?

Got Mom to come with for the first time this year on Sunday smile

Me with my parents and a few jumbos right before leaving on Sunday

Nice Job Fred_Bear! There is no way I could even think of drilling 250 holes over two day. Then again it looks like I have about 30 years on ya. Oh to be young again!

Great question. I don't have the answer but I can tell you that having fished Mille Lacs for many years there are two species which I have never caught during open water; tullibe and eel pout. Will be interesting to see other comments or stories...

Our boat has caught a couple eelpout during open water... Last year in fact. I have fished the lake for over 10 years and this is the 1st year I have ever seen a pout in our boat.

I have never seen a tulli come up on hook and line during open water....

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
