2020 Mille Lacs Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

I caught some smallmouth out there on Friday.  Its getting tougher every time I go.  I think the fishing pressure is getting to them after the #1 ranking in the country.  Water temp was only 51 degrees because it got into 40's a couple of nights late last week.  Had to fish soft plastics very slow to get a bite.

Bite was good again this morning. Including another keeper. Set lines and jigging about 50/50 on fish. If the fish was there it was eating. 🎣🎣🎣 Tight Lines everyone!

I was on perfect rocky structure last Weds. in 19-27'. Had it all to myself. Only 1 Ice Castle within 200 yards. Fishing was decent. Caught 8 respectable walleyes, all on Slab Raps. All while hole-hop

Broke the 40 mark!

I heard from a friend out there Friday that things went well for the bite.  The wind made the process tough but numbers of walleyes were boated, topped off with a pair of 28’s and 1 21 inch smallie.

Dragging snelled bait rigs.

I almost went Sunday but we opted out due to wind.  Maybe this weekend.  Mille Lacs, Gull or Leech are the options.

Fished the big lake on Thursday afternoon.  Hit up the mud flats, searching for fish and tryimg turn them using jigging raps.

Fish were scattered and seemed less than aggressive.  Only boating 4 a 24",23",16"& a 13".  A couple fish missed along the way.

We caught fish on the top edge in 23 ft and as deep as 33ft.  Most fish marked were tight to the bottom edge.

This is a relatively new tactic for me in open water so it was a learning trip for me.

A couple my fishing partner caught.

Went out the last couple days on Mille lacs, we had no problem finding fish, but the big fish eluded us... We got all sorts of year classes from 11" eyes on up to 24", which is a good sign... That big storm they got must have dirtied the water up, all the fish we found were on the top edge of the flats no matter how bright it was... Rigging leeches and crawlers were the best until we got some waves then the jigging rap was taking all the fish. The fish were stacked up on points of flats and narrow ridges on the flats... We tried pulling lead for a little while, but I've never done it so I had zero confidence in it haha.

Thanks for the report.  We also managed just 4 fish, biggest being 27" and lost a 30" plus eye.

Right?! I was surprised. Snowmobiles and side by sides everywhere but a car?! So far no bites on minnows. Hoping and praying but no bites yet. Bit cold but going strong!

Fished the SW corner today about 2 miles out. Lowest amount of ice I found was 10" and a few spots well over 20". Before anyone gets too excited I'm pretty sure these spots were where the ice push up on itself or below itself. Rough ice in general. Marked a lot of fish, tried everything and eventually got a few at dusk on a dead stick and a spoon. No big cracks but a few about half a foot and completely open. Nice to get out but was a long walk out and back.

Saw a car and truck out on the ice yesterday. West side.  We walked out.  Our fishing was decent on spoons and Rippin Raps.  Nice average size to them.  Lots of lookers.

Got out this afternoon from the Red Door and set up in 19'. Lots of lookers until about 4:30 when they turned on for a bit. Ended up with some really healthy walleyes and a bonus eelpout but no keepers.  Got off before the snow started so  a really nice day. Had about 12" of ice where I was at.

I drove past the west side of the lake on Monday (north) and Tuesday (south).  There was quite a few houses out there from what I could see but most were not very far out and there was very few cars/trucks out there.  Most people seemed to still be exercising caution and parking on shore and walking or using an ATV.  There must still be some cautious, sane people on this earth.

The actual snow cover on the lake yesterday wasn’t bad.  I’m sure the wind helped.  The resort did a lot of plowing into the evening.  We left last night around 9.  This morning my buddy that’s still out there said he was blown in pretty good this morning after the overnight snow.

My wife and I were thinking about heading back this afternoon but the negative degree temps and expected wind chills aren’t getting trumped by the bite - in that house anyway.  Sticking around home instead.

a coworker was looking today and many are saying no to wheelhouses. He ended up going out through Barnacles.

Macs Twin Bay had houses pulled by trucks yesterday.  Not much past the break though.

After a few phone calls,  found out Randy's road is going good, full size trucks pulling houses.

Suggest you call first though .

Buddy from my work is out of Randy's with truck and ice castle. Not sure how far you can get out though.

Bite was good yesterday afternoon.  Mostly 19’s and 20’s.  The best action for us was on tip ups with pike suckers; not nearly as many in the house with shiners and jigging.  One keeper @ 22 inches.

The wind switched and the morning bite has been slower.  2 missed and 2 caught; 17 and 19 inches.  Equal action in the house as the tip ups.  We’re covering 25-28 fow.  Fishing out of Barnacles.

One walleye between 21-23 inches

OR

One over 28 inches.

FYI the slot is tough to hit by design so we don’t hit our quota too fast.  Don’t expect to see many legal keepers.

I released two slots the one day I fished Mille lacs this winter.  Maybe I got lucky.  I have no desire to keep a walleye that big.

I was up last weekend and did okay,15 fish one slot that we released. Anyone else noticing that there seem to be lots of 10-14" fish?  Nice to see another year class coming in.

Has anyone been out to check ice on any lakes in area. Heard there was 2-3 inches on strand.

Yup, I started it. Seeing people post about water temps in the low 40s, and knowing that there will be a lot of cold temps this week....we may see the small bays freeze. I have a vested interest as I'd like to make it up next weekend, but have strong doubts that our small bay will be ice-free. Let's hear those reports as the lake begins to change.

Looks like NOAA national weather has modified their colder than normal winter with December being quite a bit warmer. May be a struggle to get good ice by Christmas especially Southern two thirds of the state. Getting above average snow (as forecasted) will also hamper ice build. Hope they are wrong.

On the south end...  As we approach Thanksgiving, thin ice covers back bays and a portion of the big lake, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay.   Roughly half of the lake is covered in ice with the rest open water.  Ice anglers are hoping for cold nights combined with low wind and no snow to create a good early sheet of ice.  Every year is different based on Mother Nature of course, but normally resorts will be able to get their smaller fish houses, called day houses, out around December 10th.  When the ice thickens, resorts will begin marking trails where there is the best ice.  Stay tuned...
On the Rainy River...   The river is covered in most places with a layer of thin ice.  Most ice fishing is done on the main lake during the ice season where there isn't current.  With current in the river, most visitors will work through a resort for safety.
Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle has a mix of iced over areas with open water in neck down areas.  The ice is forming nicely and the hopes are for colder weather to keep things moving along positively.  Resorts are ready for ice fishing!  A complete list of lodging and ice fishing packages available at www.fishingminnesota.com/Lodging

Went out to check some ice on one of my lakes that seems to freeze over before most. 2-3". Still early but maybe another week and ice fishing has begun for me. We'll see. Anyone else getting excited. Now only if cold weather would hurry up and come!

On the south end...  As we roll into mid November, thin ice conditions on back bays as well as the Rainy River have put an end to the open water fishing season.  Big Traverse Bay is still open water.  The hope each year is to have cold nights combined with low wind and no snow early in the season to create a good early sheet of ice.  Every year is different based on Mother Nature of course, but normally resorts will be able to get their smaller fish houses, called day houses, out around December 10th.  A couple of resorts who provide spearing for pike in back bays of course earlier.  Again, this is just an average.  This year could be earlier or later, time will tell, but everyone is watching.
On the Rainy River...   The river is covered in most places with a layer of thin ice.  The fall season ended up with a good number of shiners in the river from the fall run.  The few anglers who fished this past week had some good reports.  We believe there are a good number of walleyes in the river despite mixed fishing reports this fall.  Some anglers believe the sheer numbers of shiners in the river made the bite more difficult.
Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle has a mix of iced over areas and open water.  That is quite typical this time of year.  The ice is forming nicely and the hopes are for colder weather to keep things moving along positively.

On the south end...  Unseasonably warm weather the first week of November saw a fair number of anglers on the water.  Once the lake cleaned up a bit as the waters were dirtied up from a big blow, good walleye reports started coming in from various areas.  Anchored up and jigging with a minnow in anywhere from 7 - 26' of water has been the goto.  Walleyes are setting up in early ice locations nicely.  Some big fall pike being caught by walleye anglers jigging.  Jumbo perch in the mix with walleyes.
On the Rainy River...   Some very good reports on the river as of recent.  Four Mile Bay, Wheeler's Point and up river to Vidas putting out some good walleyes.  Most are jigging with an emerald shiner.  Gold, glow and pink have been strong color combos this year.  Anglers still fishing sturgeon catching some nice fish this week as well.
Up at the NW Angle...  Many anglers have put away the open water gear but for those who are out, the walleyes are there.  With deer hunting started, most are in the woods.  For those still fishing, a jig and a minnow on points and areas with current in 13'-26' has been good.  Gold, pink, and glow colors great choices.  Pike and muskies are active.  A complete list of lodging and ice fishing packages available at www.fishingminnesota.com/Lodging

Was up this weekend, checked ice off North sides of Moccasin point and Breezy point. Both had 3-3.5" near shore but quickly dropped to 2-2.5" before you got 100' feet out. Not enough for me so retreated back to shore

We went for an ice scouting trip yesterday afternoon.   First lake we went to had sign of people fishin earlier in the day, I took the spud walked out 20' from the landing, 2 hits and the spud was through. Wherever anybody walked there was water in their tracks. No cars at the landing, and I didn't see any big open holes, so I figure they were lucky.   Went to lake #2 didn't even get out of the truck. Somebody had driven a wheeler around  to the west, and cleared a bit of snow to make a skating rink, open water straight out from the landing. Nobody skating, wonder why.   Went to lake #3 there was a half a dozen guy's fishin a half a mile out in the lake. I grabbed the spud, went out on the ice, chopped three different holes, the most it took was six hit's from the spud, and I was through. I'm thinkin 3"s of ice, and figured my guess was a little generous. I couldn't see where any of the guy's out fishin had even tried spudding, or drilling a hole, they just followed the other tracks out. Where they were fishin it was open last Sunday. I didn't see anybody catchin fish, and we were there at prime time. One group was spread out over a pretty good sized area, the other guys were standing in a group, with all kinds of junk around them. I have a word for those guy's, but can't post it here. LOL   I want to go fishin pretty badly, but there is a fine line out there that I'm not about to cross. We got in the truck and left that lake too.   Didn't even stop at Vermillion, can't believe it could be any better. The 3 lakes we looked at were all less than a 1000 acres in size, the one with the open water, right around 250 acres.   No body ever accused me of bein a genius, but I'm not about to risk my life to go fishin. LOL   Spearin opens on Tuesday, I'm chompin at the bit to go, supposed to get cold tonight, and tomorrow night, so maybe we'll make enough ice to go. At least where we spear you can touch the bottom if you go through. Our spearing lake is the one that took 2 hits. lol   Been there done that quite a few times over the year's, the older I get the less I want to get wet. LOL   The guy up at the baitshop told me he heard that Red lake had 7-9"s of ice, SURE.   Jim
