thick ice and spear hole

do any of you guys angle cut the three viewing sides of the spear hole? I cut or chisel out quite a bit of the ice at an angle it really helps see fish that are staying outside of the hole and lets you see them coming a little sooner.

charlie I have one house on the lake I live on and one for traveling to other lakes and know I dont keep it in the same spot all year. I move quite frequently. I dont sit in one spot for more than three days unless I'm seeing tons of fish.

I'm in deeper water now and next I'm going to try shallower. the lake I'm on it only gets about 11 fow at its deepest so its hard to judge that theroy on it. but typicaly I do find that pike do suspend in deeper water on other lakes as the winter goes on. I think thats its due to the panfish movement?

the lake I live on I ussally start in the deep water cause I see more pike.

I have always tried to do this to gain more viewing area. Im sure you cut your hole the same as i do. Auger the 4 corners, and cut a hole in the middle, then take the saw and cit the rest. I try to angle the outsides to get more viewing space.

bns I dont auger a hole in the middle I use my chisel to bust the block in 2 pieces then pull them out.I have also tried to cut the hole at angle before pulling out but it takes more time to cut butn it does work.

Well my spear house is a permanent and I do chisel out the bottom of the hole. While digging footings we do something similar and we we call it "belling" the hole- shaped like a bell, larger on the bottom. Obviously belling a spear hole will give us a better viewing angle, and a better spearing angle if we choose to throw to the side. I do wonder if the fish are more likely to see the "side" of the spear hole. And if the do see the side of the hole, does it spook some away?

I couldn't see spending the time to chisel a hole bell shaped for a 1 day sit. Love it in my permanent, though.

I just cut my hole 10-12 inches larger than the hole in my house.

I went with the straight down hole approach til I saw a northern come in just under the ice and didnt see most of the fish til it was outta range since then Ive chipped it into a bell shape, works wonders I think, see more and feel better about seeing something that I normally wouldnt. Makes decoying easier for me, sometimes my deak wonders out a ways and I now can see it clearly no matter what.
