Are there springs in Riley Lake in EP? I was out there yesterday and noticed that people are driving, but not all over the lake.. Are there spots I need to watch for while driving?

I fish Riley quite often but haven't been out there yet this winter. I know that there are (or atleast hear that there are)many springs so I'm always carefull. My buddy was out there on early ice and he ran into a guy coming off the ramp on his ATV. My friend told me that where he was, there was 12" of ice, but the guy on the ATV was on the West end on only 2"! I frequent the area and I know for a fact that the west southwest area of the lake froze last. Infact, Riley was the last lake in E.P. to freeze completely. I also know of a guy who put his snowmobile through the ice in Feb a couple years ago. I believe he did that near the south shore. Other reports would be great! I'm itchin to get out there too but like you, have been waiting till I know it's safer.

I WOULDN'T KEEP ANY CRAPPIES OUT OF THERE. THEY ARE FULL OF DISEASES; MANY HAVE SORES THE SIZE OF NICKELS ON THEIR SIDES...

I fished it about 3 weeks ago in an area that consistently produces crappies.....until this year. Never marked a fish the whole time from about 5:30am-9am. Never heard anything about a fish kill this summer so they must be using a new area. I will try again once the ice gets a little thicker and one can drive. The west end froze over very late. Then we go the snow which insulated and prohibited ice growth when we had the cold temps. Have to imagine once the snow melted that more was made but haven't been out since to check.

Has anyone tried starring out that way? Quite few years ago we were hammering 10" crappies out there and then nothing but bullheads.

Haven't tried in a couple years but I also hammered 10" crappies there in the spring rite in front of the outdoor center. In the spring I've also hammered nice crappies rite in pugatory creek next to Staring Lake parkway behind the outdoor center. I was suprised to find them there. And one of my nicest northerns came out of staring yeeears ago. 36". There used to be a ton of nice fish in there. Hope it's still the same!

I noticed those sores on the crappies lsat year..Seemed like 1 of every 5 I pulled up had a big sore sticking out of it. Usually about an inch and all red..I've always wondered what those were..

I've released some decent northerns out of there as well...until about 2 years ago it's been just awful for anything but bullheads and carp. Algae has turned it into pea soup the past few summers and the lake seems to be in rough shape.

I'd agree with JimBuck. Used to stop & fish pike from shore there for the fun of it, hooked a few nice ones, but the past couple summers...ewwww. I didn't even bother this summer. Hopefully it clears up again.

I've seen an awful lot of massive carp rolling in the shallows in the springtime, I wonder if that has anything to do with the degraded water quality.

I checked Riley out last night. It was about 14" out by where most of the permanents were but more like 10" by the big point. I didn't go west of there. And I got completely skunked. Only marked one fish on my sonar.

You guys catching them on pike suckers or chubs?  Hopefully the wind dies down this afternoon.  Coming up with a big group to help me do the docks and 2 of the hoists.  I have the requisite adult beverages need to get them some fish for the frying pan.

I've been using the "modern step" scales for about a year now. I bought them on Amazon. They have very good reviews, and the scales are very convenient and suitable for weighing anything.  Here is the link https://www.amazon.com/Professional-Accurate-Reloading-Modern-Step/dp/B01N25OC6P/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1536218450&sr=8-1&keywords=fish+scale

The Vermillion south of MSP is spelled with two "l"s. The one in this forum only has one.

It's always nice when you have a week to get everything nicely packed, organized and ready to go. 🙂 It's just that few hours when you get home tired and dump it all in a big dirty pile to sort out that suk! 😆   Gook Luck!

For all the stuff I thought I had at my fingertips to pack, I sure am taking all week to get it done!  At least I have all my supplies.  I just keep tinkering on this and that, not getting it bagged up!   Leaving tomorrow morning around 9 and should have the entire afternoon to scout our top areas.  We’ll land somewhere in the northern third of the state.
