Pelican Lake report II

Recommended Posts

Dahitman44

Well we made it out to the fish house last night and it was pretty easy since I took the sled. The snow is deep and will be a pain for anyone that uses a truck or wheeler.

The road is filled in and not good condition.

The fishing was S-L-O-W.

Caught a slimer at 4 p.m. and then had some "vexilar action" but no bites. It was still fun to get out there. There was one other guy out there with his sled otherwise nobody.

Hopefully the weather levels off so things will get better.

Hitman

There was no flooding where I am located, thank goodness.

So you think 4 wheelers would be a waste to haul up from the cities? I though about it, but doesn't sound too good.

Hitman....where have you been?? I finally got the house out a few weeks ago. The fishing however is horrible. I've caught only one perch, if that tells you anything. I guess I'll just have to go out there and catch a buzz, because that house isn't moving until the slush freezes up so that I can get it off. Stop by and say hi if you're out on the sled.

Eye --

I have wanted to come out and visit but I have been out-of-town or doing "stuff" almost every weekend with Christmas, then a trip to AZ and then storms have not helped either.

I have been a little "parched" so I can even drink one of your beers ...

wink

Well, I think wheelers will be pretty tough but it depends on if the road opens and then you can try and avoid the big drifts, but I will not lie to you -- it will be tough.

Hit Is my little spearhouse still out there? I can't figure out why the lake is so murky. The Ice fishin has basically sucked on pelican for a few years in my opinion. Of course the way i and most people fish is i the big houses that don't move. Hopefully it will be better one day. Krebsy PS Any body put a STRAIGHT ROAD in yet or should weget together and pay someone to get a road goin?

I think Barry is getting a guy to put a straight road out there - -man the guy that did the first one must have had WAY too many beers.

The fishing continues to be VERY slow on Pelican. Between Three houses we iced zero eyes.

There is no road going from the west access and you will get stuck if you try to drive a truck.

Hopefully it will get better this week as the weather gets more regular.

....."When the weather gets more regular"

What is your ideal ice fishing weather pattern?

oh -- that is easy - -where it does not change every day or two and we don;t have front after front.

When I am fishing eyes I find that having similar weather for three days or so helps the activity of the fish.

Hit Pelican yesterday and actually iced 2 decent eyes. We were the only ones out there and they hit in big shiners red hook 22 fow at abound 6:30.

May have gotten more but my "feed it till they (word choice)" backfired cause the big on tangled up all our lines so we lost about 20 minutes trying to get them all fixed up.

By the time we were down again it was less than a minute and we had our second.

Not a lot of action but entertaining.

The road is NOT usable.

Sled only.

caught 2-man limits of 17" walleyes every day.  biggest eyes were 26".  trolled cranks and worked jig/lindy rig w/ leeches in 8-12'.  friend's first trip to Rainy and he CPR'd a 40" pike!  he's hooked now!

Hard to find a lake up the trail not chock-full of invasive smallmouth. Slip bobbers and leeches, and cast towards shoreline rock piles.

Why do you fish? We all have different goals when we go fishing. Some of us want a meal of fish to eat. Some of us just want to relax. Most of all, we want that "TROPHY" catch. We want something to brag to our friends about, the "Master Angler".

I was not going to go yesterday but the weather was too nice to stay home. Fished about 5 hours but only got 4 bass and one pike. Not one hit on my go-to jigs & plastic! I don't recall that ever happening over 5 hours. Got a few bass on surface lures (and the pike) and a few on cranks. Water was almost 6 degrees warmer than the day before. The nights finally stayed above the low 40s so that has to have helped.   I have been marking very few fish in water less than 30 feet. I rarely fish deeper than that.   Got desperate a few days ago and went down to Pelican. Not much better down there. A few crappie and dink pike and about 6 nice bass.   Headed north of Red Lake, Ontario in a week. Hope things are going better way up there.

My wife and 2 Labs are boat camping on the east side of the Brule Narrows this week. We have been here dozens of times, but with late spring, I am wondering what patterns are working for the smallies and walleyes. Thanks 'Pout

I believe @Rick raises them.   But I don’t think he has a dual sport bike....

Got my personal best tonight for this lake....27.5"!  My son got a 24, we also got a 17, 20.5", 22". Same area as last night. Fun couple of nights on this beautiful lake.

Cobra, welcome back.  To bad no replies in almost 3 years to your inquiry.  Their beautiful dogs but there must not be many owners of them on here?  🤔   Like I have been asking for about 4 years if there are any Dual Sport bike owners on this site?  😉

I haven't been on the website in a long time so long delayed reaction. Sorry   I do have an English Pointer and I live in Longville. My old dog passed away a few weeks ago at almost 15 years old!!! I still have my young dog with special bloodlines. His father came from the last vial of Guard Rail semen. So to have a grandson of a Hall of Fame dog that died in the early 80's is very rare.
