Most have been using Suckers and Smelt. We have been using Suckers 4" to 5" with a few decoys as well. The upside to using the 4-5 we have been getting bigger Waleyes as well.

The questions most people ask is where are the fish biting. First of all it depends on what you are looking for. Today we have been catching more pike in the deeper water and the Walleye bite has been better in shallower. Three weeks ago you could reverse that statement.

This is how my boys fish Red. They come up stay with dad in his fish house and move from vacant house to vacant house fishing for what they want, or they will take a rent and go house. They will fish for Pike in one spot then Walleyes in another, then Crappies in another. When Danny and his buddy came they got 126 Walleyes a couple of Northern and one was over 40” and a couple of Crappies. Now of course they have a dad that has seventeen houses in four areas and the use of the equipment and plow trucks, but they move, move and move. Ice fishing is like deer hunting; you have to have a couple of stands for which way the wind blows.

This is why we have rent and goes and day houses with half-day rentals so people can do this, however they are the least popular rentals. It seams most would rather move into a house and settle in for their stay. At times it can be like standing on a deer stand when the wind is not in your favor for what you are fishing for. If the Walleye bite is slow switch it up for Pike or vice versa if you are sitting in one place. Play some cards have a good time but if you want a lot of action set yourself to be as mobile as possible. If the snow is deep and you don’t feel comfortable getting off road with your portables spend a night on the south shore and a night on the north shore, stay with an outfitter in deeper water one night and one in shallower water the next night but move around if you can.

Red Lake can offer fantastic Walleye fishing but it is never a given you will still do as good as most places even when the bite is slow but you do have opportunities to catch a trophy Pike or a wall mountable Crappie, just this week I have seen this happen for quite a few fisherman some have caught the biggest fish of their lives and this is what we call slow.

  • 2 weeks later...

Guys & gals,

We would like at this time to thank our guests for all the fine memories we have because of your stay with us. My brothers and I will be telling stories all summer long about some of the adventures we had while trying to keep up with things up there. I have been back for a few days and still wake up at 4:30 AM thinking I have to go fill generators. The last week was probably the best Pike fishing we have had in a long time with 17 fish that were caught in the 36” to 44” range. The Walleye bite was slow but the big Pike was a lot of fun.

Also don't forget about our JOE FISH contest. Just send us email about your favorite fishing trip with your dad and you could be selected to win a pass to fish with Portavilla all season at no charge. Selection will be made prior to father’s day 2009.

Just a reminder we will be sending out pre-fishing invitations for those that stayed with us this season around October for the 19th & 20th of December. Just drive up and we will provide the shack and let us know how the fishing is in the spot we have it. If your email changes let us know so we can update the list to keep you in the loop on this. Some of you will be the first to check out our new 26x10 6-man units and try out our new secrete weapon the NOMAD.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
