What's been hot for lures?

Recommended Posts

We are coming up on Sunday to the South side. Is anyone willing to offer tips on what's been working. Gold Rock n Rolls have always been good in the past, but I haven't seen or heard much mention lately. Buck shots tipped with heads?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Your right on both of your choices. also the new jig called the Stop Sign is good. If you look back in the posts there was alot of talk about the SS. The bite has been a bit slow on the South, but the weather has caused alot of the Slow Down!Has to pick up soon.

I would also reccomend having some jigging shad raps along in the glow red color. Been my go to jig all year along with the stop sign.

Do you know who makes the "stop sign"?

Has anyone every tried Hali's that have the hook attached to the little 1 inch chain?

Jr's Tackle makes the original stop sign but theres a couple people out there making some that look the same in quite a few different colors. Start out with the glow red, seems to work the best on LOW, I have found. You can get them right from Jr's or most of the bait shops in the area carry them now.

6 of us were up fishing the 2nd and 3rd last week and all of our fish came on the deadsticks nothing hit the jigs. On both days we gave up on jigging and went with dead sticks only

I'm with NAMA on this. I've used the stopsign and glow red jigging shads to ice the majority of my fish on LOW for the past 3 years. If neither of those is working, I'll break out something smaller like a glow drop in pink or a smaller stop sign. I might change to an all gold demon if things are still going bad and no fish are cooperating. Then I might try something slower that flutter in gold or glow red like a angel eye if I'm marking them and they won't bite. If none of these are working your best bet is probably a plain jig or red hook under a bobber or deadstick as eyes1 suggests, or come back another day.

A nice flutter style drop jig that worked really well for me when I was up last year in gold or in glow pink is JB Lure's Jig Eye. They also make a Gem-n-eye, but I prefer the treble hook that comes with the Jig Eye. Lost only one fish out of several hooked in the 3 days we fished up there last year, which says a great deal about the quality of the hooks they come on. I have already secured my Stop Signs for this year's trip (coming up Jan. 9-12). Hopefully they work as well as I've been reading on here.

By the way, for any FM regulars on here, this is my new posting name. I used to post under the name Big Otis, but a couple of days ago something happened. The login password and everything I have been using simply stopped working, so now I'm posting under the name Lakers. Has anybody else had this problem? I thought it to be pretty strange.

I will post how well this weekend's trip worked and what worked and didn't work when I get back on 9-13-08.

Good luck to anybody else heading up this week/weekend!!

I'm making my first trip ever up tomorrow. Pardon my ignorance, but I've read what a stop sign is, but do people fish them as a jig, or do they fish them with a dropper rig below the stop sign? Or both?

I think we're going to stop at Border Bait on the way to Zippel. Does anyone know if they have them, or if there's another bait shop recommended on the way up? Thanks all and good luck!

Yep Border Bait as well as Log Cabin both have a nice selection of them in different colors. I haven't heard of anyone fishing them on a deadstick with a dropper but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Give it a try! Mostly though you fish them as a jig with either a whole frozen shiner or hook half a frozen shiner through head and jig it that way. Good Luck!

Why does it always seem Lake of the Woods has a new "jig of choice?" Last year it was the Chubby Darter and now the Stop Sign. All this does is make me go spend more money on tackle when I already have a box full of junk and only four jigs I use. laugh

I can't go by a tackle shop without buying something new and just got back from LOW and a plain red hook with a yellow bead caught most of the fish!

Do you tip your angel eyes with a minnow head?

Does anyone recommend a place in Baudette where we can pick up shiners, frozen or alive?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
