Atv Tires/tubes

Wade Joseph

Question

Anyone running tubes in their 4 wheeler tires? Either I have the worst luck, or these things should have tubes in them. I had 3 holes in the original tires in the first two years. Plugged two. The third was a R/R spike and was too big to patch. So I got new tires. Now less than 4 months old, I have a right rear going flat. I hope it was just from drastic temp difference between garage and outside. I re-inflated it, but if it goes flat again and I can find a hole, I am considering running tubes in them. Will tubes hold up to 55 mph which is top speed of my wheeler? Not sure I wanna spend the money to fill them with that tire slime stuff, as it would take allot of it to fill them and I do not like the idea of a quart of that carp just rolling around in there. Once over about 10 mph it would just make the tire out of balance do to centrifugal force.

Any ideas?

What tires did you replace them with? Stock type tires are usually very weak in pucture resistance. Alot of aftermarket tires are 4-6 ply, which makes them alot better for the off-road enviroment.

Tubes help...but won't cure a puncture. Slime won't seal a tire with a hole in it already. It's designed to seal around whatever punctured the tire or seal the leak until you can fix it. If you elect to go with tubes, use baby powder between the tube and tire. I would still suggest using the slime. The slime equalizes in tire at high speeds. Or at least it is supposed to. I have tubes in mine with slime in the tubes. I have never felt a shake caused by the slime. Can't have too much insurance. I don't know anyone that carries a spare on the trail.

A slow leak is often caused by dirt/mud getting packed in between the tire and rim. Break the bead on the tire (not very hard to do) and clean it out. Usually worst along the outside edge.

Once I took my tires off the rim the first time they have never sealed. slow leaks that go flat and I have to air it up about twice a month...not often enough for me to worry about it. I have used tubes before and they work fine...until the valve stem tears off the tube or they wear through from rubbing. I have had problems with one tire with tubes several times but the other one has had the same tube in it for 8 years or more.

I always had very small leaks in them. Then, I put tubes in and all of my air leak issues have been gone for four years now. I have steel stems so I don't have any issues with the broken stems.

Best move I ever made.

With the stock goodyear rawhide's, then moving to 589's. Neither tire had an issue smirk

589's has the stainless stems. Stock...I really don't remember.

Back when the DNR was seining our beach in July I asked, and apparently they were through oak narrows.   But long way to go to get to us.   I'll keep my eyes open and my mask and snorkel on.  Didn't see any sign off them this summer.

Nice job Troy.   We are happy with our opening day for ducks.  2 man limit of mixed species by 10am.  LOTS of people where we were today but that was expected.  Other than getting beat to our spot, no issues that would keep up away.  Not even the rain.

Thanks, I'm riding this now TW200 so not sure I can get on any of the ATV trails. Might have to sled by in the winter! 👍

There are actually 3 tree carvings on the trail from Soudan to Ely.  I saw 2 of them but missed the 3rd.  I believe that trail is the Prospector Trail #4 or #6.  You have to start from the parking lot on the Murray Road 2 miles past Soudan since several property owners on the old railroad bed didn't allow off-road vehicles on their properties.  Another option is to travel from Tower to Embarrass then on to Ely, but that adds a couple hours to the trip.

I've seen that caving on a few web pages. What trail is that on?  It would be cool to ride by. 👍

The colors are getting good. Beautiful time of year. Maples are full red and birch and aspen are going too.  I’m not finding a formula for walleyes. Best luck when fishing saddles and shoreline drop offs 10’ down to 20’. I’m using old crawlers, too, because a) it’s hard to find minnows although Northwoods in Cook has them and b) it’s been too warm to keep them alive.  We do have a change in weather happening right now. Wind is coming up and the temperature is dropping. It’s going to be hard to fish Saturday through Monday but the change could be good after that.  Good luck, you’ll need some. They are out there and you’ll get dinner but you’ll have to work for them. RLG

Thank you. Yes, weather does look sketchy but we'll make the best of it. Looking forward to the colors and just getting away.

Some more heavily fished lakes are tough ALL season.  Lake Minnetonka and Mille Lacs come to mind.  The water is clear, there are tournaments all the time, and the fish are not easy to catch.   That is why I focus my efforts on lakes with less pressure.
