Perch Lake

Just flipped through my lake map book and came across perch lake. Never knew the lake existed. I live in River Falls. How do you get to it? How do you fish for rainbows on hard water?

Sounds like fun to me!

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Perch Lake is about 4-5 miles east of Houlton.

From River Falls, go through Hudson on Wis 35 north to Co. Rd V, follow V north to Co. Rd. E (E comes from Houlton) Turn right, or east on E about 1 1/2 miles to Perch Lake Road. This will be on the left side (north) of the road. (bottom of hill) Just a short way to the lake.

There is tons of info about fishing trout through the ice in the trout forum. I would start shallow (10' or less) and use small sunfish presentations. A weed edge would be good if you can find one.

Good luck.

fish in 50 ft of water 20 yds off the point (formed by the bay and the main lake), and use a small jig with 2 spinners, (available at burkhart co-op) similar to the flutter bug, and use crappie minnows. This is a sure fire way of landing trout. Need a vevilar to mark them. I have fished out there for 7 yrs and this works!

Do you have to walk all the way in to the lake? I drove by there a couple weeks ago and the gate was closed and nothing was plowed. I'd love to spend some time on the ice there, was even thinking about spendign the day there tomorrow.

No, you were trying to enter the park there, there is a boat launch on the south shore and a parking lot just up from that. You get there off County Road E unload your stuff and park in the parking lot.

Hudson huh, I am originally from Hudson

Thanks! I'm hoping to get out there sometime this week.

We moved to Hudson from Texas 6 years ago. I love this area for all the places to fish. It doesn't get much better!

I've got some time off at the end of the month. Would anyone want to show me around some of these WI lakes? I'll pay for bait and bring some food if that is an incentive.

Is your secret that you have caught some species out there that you think no one knows are in that lake? Because I am pretty sure there are no secrets out there. I grew up fishing this lake.

I've been fishing perch lake for 25 years. Any time after dark with a glow jig and a waxie you can't keep them off your hook. It's fun but if you want to catch big trout through the ice go to glen hills park, they average 2 to 3 pounds. As far as driveing on the lake I have in the past and still will drive out there but the landing is very steep.

Are the regs the same at Glen Hills as they are on Perch Lake? I tried Perch Lake this past week for a couple of hours. Didn't have as much time as I'd like. I'll have to head out there some evening. Thanks for the presentation hint. They weren't biting on minnows!

glenwood city just off from co road E. in the spring time it produces several 1 to 1.5 blue gills. and some nice crappies not like on the river but 9 to 10 inch. when I have some time I will post some pics. But the trout are amazing in this lake there brooks also, breeding trout that are bread out so there stocked at a min of 17 inches. but its not like pearch lake they bite in the AM close to shore.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey Riverdreams,

I grew up in Hudson and used to fish Glen Hills Park about 20 years ago!! I am going to be in town next week from Colorado and am going to go there and try it. Have you been there yet this year? If so do you have any tips for me? We used to catch them on minnows on a tip-up as well as just your standard jig stick with a small panfish jig and a waxie. If I remember right we fished to the right of the boat launch. But I do remember a guy that fished in the little bay across from that and got some decent bluegills too.

Thanks for your help!

Tim

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
