Help: Lake Bemidji first-timer

Recommended Posts

Hello-

I will be ice fishing Lake Bemidji for the first time next weekend (January 16-18th). I will be in a wheel house. No portables. Would like to target Walleyes, Perch, Crappies.

I am bringing an ice fishing first-timer with me and would like to show them a good time(as far as fishing goes, ha ha :D).

Looking for general information such as: what works and what doesn't, colors, etc. I would appreciate any help/advise that I can get.

If you are willing to give up some specifics in an email that would be awesome! [email protected]

Thanks and good fishin'!

Thorski

Hope you are excited to come up, I know I sure miss the area!

Was on Lake Bemidji last weekend and did alright. Fished all over the lake, mostly the south end. The lake gets pressured by some good fishermen in the area and if a spot is good it'll likely have a few shacks on it.

All I did was simply find a good break and fished it during peak hours. There are plenty of good breaks around the lake, you'll see houses on them, but good starting spots are right out from the Cameron Access, or right out from the access at Paul and Babe. Its would be nice to have portables but if I were you I would drill holes until you found a nice break say around 27-30 feet and set the house down.

If you are staying in the fish house fish into the night. The only time I caught 'eyes was very near dawn and dusk for about a 20 minute window. They bit fast for about 20 minutes then shut down- could see them on the camera but they didn't seem interested in any offering. In the morning the 'eyes bit first and then perch followed for a short while. In the evening perch bit first and then the 'eyes followed. Caught the majority of fish on a small Northland Buckshot Rattle with a gold back and orange front tipped with a minnow head. The other fish came on a medium shiner held on the bottom. I think catching crappies on Lake Bemidji is a rare occurrence, if you tie into one it will probably be a nice one, but don't expect to catch 'em.

I guess I could sum it like this- fish hard around prime time for eyes, and maybe set some flags shallow during the day. Try perch during the day, expect walleye at dusk. You have a chance at a nice fish so be ready!

As for travel, there are some plowed spots, but bring a shovel for sure.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

I'm sitting on the south end of L.Bemidji, right now the bite has been extremely slow. Before Christmas I did ok, maybe with a good warm up it will help the fish feel hungry again, haven't had much of a warm up in a while though. Too cold again this morning, -10 where I live, which is east of Bemidji, it's usually colder as I drive towards town. There's going to be an Ice Fishing tournament the weekend your coming to town. It's called the Hard Water Classic. Might want to check it out. Good luck fishing. Diana

Diana-

Thanks for the reply. From what I am hearing from the weather man, it doesn't sound like a warm up is coming anytime soon. At least not before next weekend! I have heard rumblings of daily high temps not getting much above -20F. OUCH! I don't know what that will do to the fishing. The luck of the draw I guess. You pick a weekend and go fishing. Some things you can't control.

It sounds like if the fish aren't biting there might be other ways to entertain ourselves. ;-)

Thanks for the reply.....I appreciate it.

Jason40-

Thank you for your service and sacrifice for your/our country. I will let you know how I do when I get back.

Yes Jason40 I also say thank you for all your dedication to our country. I don't know for sure but isn't there an eel pout festival in Walker around February sometime, the Leach Lake area would know when.

Don't be discouraged about the cold weather and fishing. As long as a the pressure is steady for a while the fish adjust and do start biting again.

Yesterday it was 7 above at 1:30pm, I decided to sit in my house. At 4pm I caught a small perch. 4:15 I caught a keeper perch at 10" long. Somewhere between 5 and 5::30 I missed a good size fish, line got caught on a junk of ice by the hole, then I caught a 15" walleye, I left at 6:30pm and it was -7 below. Like I said, the temps have been cold but 'steady cold' for a while.

I'll be back out for the morning bite to see if I can catch the one that got away.

Happy fishing to you both! Diana

Hey, My story is different from most of the other replies. I have just moved onto lake bemidji this week and have caught 7 walleyes between 20 and 22 inches fishing anywhere from 30 to 10 feet. However i havent expeireinced a 20 minute window like i here so many people talking about. then again i would never use a jigging spoon and a minnowhead. thats simply my opnion. i caught my fish anywhere from 530 to 1100. most of them around 730 pm. one fish yesterday morning about 630 and one missed flag about the same time today. I would not mess around with permenent fish houses unless you plan to drink beer all day. instead, find a good break like the other gentlemen said, and set up tip ups from 10 -15 feet of water. I myself would put both my tipups in 10 feet. sit in your vehicle and watch them from 430 to about 9 and you probably will get a couple nice eyes. i have not caught a walley under 20 inches all year. if you really want good walleye action though, skip bemidji and go to plantangente about 10 miles south of here. If eyes are feeding there feeding shallow most of the time. this is only what i would do and ive been punding walleyes for 5 years now. use a BIG MINNOW> ive already saig way too much.

Why would you want to catch walleyes over 20" all year?

Why not set a perm. in 10' of water instead of sitting in your truck?

The bigger the better. I know people say that theyre not as good to eat but ive not had that problem at all. All of them are very tasty, plus they are good fighters. At some point i probably will set up a permenent but it just limits my options somewhat. I may fish plantan or bemidji or irving ect. on a given day and i dont wanna have to move the house everytime.

I talked to my brother last night as he was on his way home from RED LAKE. Said it was really slow, only got 1 through to hole, lost two at the hole. He hook something that he couldn't budge with a Medium action rod and 6lb iron silk line. Said it just peeled the drag until the line busted. Most likely a pike.

Two weeks and two days til I'm home.

Thank-you to everyone that has replied and given advise and suggestions. I am really looking forward to next weekend.

Is there any TV reception with a regular antenna on Lake Bemidji? Specifically the FOX and CBS networks? I would like to be able to catch the NFC and AFC Championship games.

Thanks.

I get my tv from antenna. Fox comes in great but CBS not so much. The lake itself might be better being out in the open.

Hubby gets great reception on the lake.

And yes I wish sometimes my house wasn't stuck in one spot, but hubby sure isn't going to move it for me again. I don't mind too much, I like to be out there no matter if there biting or not, but it sure is more fun if they are! I'm kind of out of any other options, I don't run the auger and I don't pull my house with my van. Sometimes I wish I could though.

There is suppose to be a good warm up for the 'Hard Water Classic' fishing tournament this Saturday the 17th. There giving hay rides to the fishing site from the parking area on the south end of Lake Bemidji, should be a decent day for a tournament. Hope so anyway.

I'm staying at the headquarters fish house all night with a friend to watch out for vandalism, hope I don't have to call the cops on anyone. Gonna get some late night fishing time in on the rattlers, hope something bites.

If there are permanent houses out on the lake it doesn't always mean it's a good spot, like mine, hubby got stuck there with his plow truck and that's where he left my house. lol

Happy Fishing, Diana

Fishing report:

Sorry this was so slow in coming...been trying to get caught up.

Fishing started off good Friday evening and into early Saturday afternoon. As Saturday afternoon went on, we noticed the bite had slowed considerably. By Sunday, the bite was almost non-existent. We suspect that the weather/fronts had a lot to do with it.

We were set up in deep water. We tried various lures/bait but a heavy rattlin' spoon with a head or tail of a fat head minnow seemed to work best. We were able to snag one walter and one snot-rocket, the rest were very nice perch.

Other than a brief encounter with someone who thought he owned the spot he had previously vacated, (I didn't see it marked as such on the Lakemaster chip. I will contact Lakemaster and let them know of the update.) we found everyone helpful and we had a good time.

Thanks to everyone who offered tips and advise. We had a successful weekend and had a good time.

Glad you had a good time.

How deep were you? Hubby moved my house, I was close to where they had that tournament, it turned that area into slush, he moved me before it got to my house. Right now I'm set up on about 32' of depth. It's been too cold to fish much there yet. Later this week I hope to put some time in though.

I was just curious on the depth you were at, and what part, North, South, East, West or middle? I've heard lately they've been biting on the far East side and the North. Happy fishing,Diana

Every year more and more people come to IT because it is really the technology of the future, but still it is worth knowing what is in demand now, you can find it in this article https://computools.com/automotive-retail/ the sphere is described in great detail and why you need to be a software engineer!

Hello!)  I love playing minecraft.  From early childhood, I understood that this is just the best game, but the game became unrealistic after I installed the super mod https://99minecraft.com/mods/weee-flowers-mod-1-12-2-1-7-10/  !!!!! It will help everyone to make the game more interesting and cool.

It seems that I have never had problems writing essays. And here it was necessary to write residency personal statement editing. I realized that it would not be possible to cope with such a document, I decided to take the help of professionals and all the problems disappeared.

Yes, you can make good money at the casino, but I think that this is unstable earnings, and situational, if you play every day, you can get into very large debts. I was advised this casino - https://onlinecasinospill.no/ , I tried and made no mistake in choosing, there is a huge bonus system, constant promotions for any holidays and a bunch of different slots that only improve the game, also the probability of winning is quite high, I was able to earn a small amount of money, I advise you to try

Филипп 9:29 In order to avoid unplanned expenses, you need to immediately discuss all the nuances with the contractor. In fact, there are many options. But it still seems to me that it can be done independently, even bulky things with several people can be loaded and moved on by themselves

I agree with you, but not completely, because you can win once and bet a little more, that is, set aside 80% of the total amount, and then play for the remaining 20%, I think this is a good option, and in any case, a person will win

As far as I know, there are several companies in Boston that are engaged in full professional relocation, it takes a little time, but they take enough money, I saw a couple of ads on the Internet about such work, you can also find performers of this order there

For a long time I wanted to turn to a good programmer so that he would collect applications for mining for me, but I could not find it and abandoned this business, now this thought is returning. I came up with such an application that no one has, but no one can assemble it, everyone refuses. I looked at the site that you advise, quickly read it, this company made a good impression on me, I will carefully read it in the evening, then I will contact them and if they agree with my idea, I will order.
