A friend and I are taking the day off on Friday and were thinking about giving Francis a try but have never fished it in the winter.

Is it alright to drive on the lake, any bad spots, is the landing in town the best to go out from?

Thinking about trying for northerns with tip-ups. Any suggestions on a good place to start (depth, certain side of the lake)? Any advice is much appreciated, thanks!

I got some pike on the west end 2 weeks ago. Plenty of ice to drive. They were small, ok if your gonna pickle em. The bay is weedy so make sure you are way off the bottom and check you bait often!

If you want to fish the west end of Francis, use the west landing. I wouldn;t drive from the East landing to the west end for any amount of money.

The 30' hole north of clarks resort is giving up crappies at dusk, suspened at about 22',and an ocassiomal wally right on bottom.I would drive in from the west end also.I just had some francis crappies for supper last night, hard to beat!Good luck!

If your talking about Frances in Elysian, then you will be catching small northerns. I was out on the sunken island near the west side of the lake about a month ago, fished all day for one northern and a crappie. tried deeper water- 30ft hole close by and didn't see a thing. I don't have a vexlar etc, so i'm fishing in the dark. But you will find tons of small northerns. Probably caught 40+ northerns on the lake between this summer/fall/winter but haven't kept a single one. All under 2 lbs.

Good walleye lake if you can get on em.

I think it's a fun lake to fish.

Thanks for the tips, it sounds like the west end is the place to come in from. Anyone have an idea of what depth the weed line is at on the west end? Thanks again.

was spearing on the east end of the lake seen a 8-10 lb pike.

-Good to know there are some good sized boys in there, I'm surprised i have not hooked onto one yet with as much time as i've spent out there
