Thought I would start a new thread for this year. Only 4 months away.......

Made reservations today and hopefully we have some open water in the river and bay by then.

Yup, made reservations a few weeks back. All this cold and snow has me nervous if things will be open.

Ugh, I don't know what to do. As much as I want to, I don't know for sure if I can make this one. Do I make a reservation anyway or not?????

Decisions decisions. I hate making decisions.

Our crew has conflicts all over the place... and are planning on heading up late (and will hopefully miss the snowstorm this year we saw last year the weekend after the FM get together) - we're shooting for the first weekend in May...

I have made the last few years and will more than likely miss this spring.

I had a knee replacement due to be done Jan 5th but due to the hassle with the work comp insurance company, the surgery will not be done until late Feb or even March which will more than likely leave me out of commission for this one.

Not real happy as this trip is the highlight of my open water season.

We booked our rooms before we left last year! Our group grew in size too! Last year we had 8 guys in two boats, this year if all goes right, we will have 14 or 15 guys in 5 boats!

Schuster's Resort is where most will be staying and headquarters for the GTG. A little birdie told me that there are very few cabins left, so other resorts will probably be added in the future.

http://schustersresort.com/

I'm pretty sure the fee will be the same as last year $25 per person/night.

If this is something you've never done, I HIGHLY recommend it.

Ok...I have only done this once and it was great...I have checked and double checked family comiitments...

So here is my question...the year I went the lake was open somewhat and we were out of the mouth of the river...what if the lake is still iced over...is the river open and fishable...does this event happen for sure?

I know the year I went...some guys caught sturgeon in front of the resort?

Two years ago, 4 mile Bay, and the mouth portion right up to in front of Schusters was totally iced up. So we had to trailer the boat upriver a ways. I think we used the Vidas landing and had a lot of success.

There is a very good chance of open water somewhere along the river, but nothing is guaranteed. Open water was the least of concerns for guys that went a week later than us last year. Mother Nature played a cruel trick on them and dumped a foot of snow.

I guess my advice would be to plan for it now and worry about the weather in April.

Couldn't make it last year but I'm back for this year.

Lodging arrangements are made and confirmed. Schuster's Resort it is. grin

I plan to be on the water sometime Thursday afternoon I believe. Follow that up with 2 full days Friday & Saturday.

Hope to break that 60" mark this year. wink

As The Excursion draws nearer, I'll be more than happy to share tackle, rigging, and fishing techniques to help you catch these little critters. Fellow fisherman informed us a few years ago, "This ain't freakin' NASA!"

Even though we will not be staying with the FMers, MOJO and I will be up there the same weekend with around 10 other guys. We got a cabin just a few miles west of the vidas landing. Will be there Fri thru mon. If you see a crestlner with Musky Nut on the side of it stop and say hi.

Still gotta laugh at that one.

I've got our lodge booked expecting 12ish to stay with us. We also have 2 more boats coming from Roch and they got cabins as well.

Hanson, you and me both to breach the 60" mark for the first time. <- That's my prediction.

We're fishing Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon (AM) and coming home Monday PM. As stated above, this is my highlight trip of the open water season so I decided to extend it a bit. Got my Dad and Grandpa coming from SoDak as well.

What days are the resorts offering the $25 deal Im planning on making the trip up this year since I'll have a boat with a motor in April this year! Probably just 2 or 3 of us, will we just be bunked with other FM'ers in a cabin or how does it work.

The 18th, 19th and 2oth. Some come a day sooner and you should be able to get that price for an extra day.

One can also call Wheelers Point and mention you are with the Fishing Minnesota group and the price will be $25.00 per day.

I really don't think they will know what really hit them after Team South Central hits them!!

I have absolutly no gear for this event or type of fishing, I received some info from TO, so could any of you other veterans that have done this before share info on what we need to bring.

Thanks.

Oh yeah I will get this out of the way since there is an Iowegian coming, "Is there bullheads there?"

Many use there cat fishing rods and reels. No roll or any type river sinker will work. I use Gamagatsu J hooks in size 4.

I have in the past used up to 40 dozen crawlers per boat and thats with 3 anglers.

I'm sure someone will post a picture of the line set up with line, swivel and nor roll weight.

No matter what rod you are using, it must have a soft or very fast tip so one can see thew light or small taps or tugs on your line. They can be very gentle biters.

Still on the fence for this one, but if I do make it up there again, this is what the business end of my line will look like wink

I just reserved my rooms...we will have Team Foley...only 6 of us and one of the guys is not dependable so we are telling him he has to pay for the room and crawlers on SuperBowl Sunday or else we replace him.

We may have one opening in boat and room. YourBobbersDown...we may have a spot. I will be in Forest Lake @ the HS for Wrestling on Friday.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
