Recommended Posts

I am heading up to Lake Mary on Thursday and fishing it for the first time. Anyone been out there lately? Reports? Are people driving out there?

Thanks!

Ryan

Off road travel is Very slushy! The bite on Big Mary is also very slooow. I think you could leave a line down for a couple days without a hit. As for Lil Mary, the small panfish are always biting with a nice one here or there. A lot of houses are getting pulled off as of late.

Saw a couple people get stuck just driving down the plowed trail.

I don't know about the fishing, but the travel just plain is becoming not worth it...

Bringing this to the top in hopes that someone will throw out an update. I'm coming up to Mary @ the end of the month, staying @ Westridge Shores with a group of 5-7 other guys. They always do an ice fishing trip and they ALWAYS complain about the money they spend to catch so few fish. Thought if I could get an update I could maybe stop the whining wink ...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Was on Mary mid-January and fished the main lake for eyes. Got 2 between 4:30-6 pm, but only tiny perch during the day. Drove out on the plowed road but couldn't venture off due to the 6-10 inches of slush under the top coating of snow. The slush made it difficult to stay mobile. I am not sure what the ice conditions are now.

Chill62 I live in the the Detroit lakes area and have fished a few times with little luck. Just wondering what lake you got the fish in the pictures on.

On the main basin... Ice is making progress and now covers Lake of the Woods. Satellite images from 11-17-18 show the majority of the lake locked up with various pockets of open water. A very welcomed sign, but way too early to be on the main lake. Some spearing for pike taking place on Bostic Bay. Spearers are often the first on the ice. Please use resort marked trails and exercise safety precautions as ice thickness is varied. On the Rainy River... The Rainy River and Four Mile Bay is frozen over with various pockets of open water. Currently, higher than normal current. Areas of the river locked up earlier in the week. Up at the NW Angle... The NW Angle is locked with ice. Higher than normal current. As always, neck down and other areas with current are iffy. Mainly airboat traffic between islands thus far. Work through resorts and stay on staked resort ice trails when ice fishing begins. Safety first. We are getting closer!

We hunt 108 and are overrun by wolves. You can count the number of deer tracks up there. Same thing to the west of us. Once they deplete the deer enough they either starve or move on. Problem is if they have a neighboring pack the fight is on and they have nowhere to go. So we go through these endless cycles between having deer or having wolves. Biologists have determined a wolf can eat 25 deer a year!
