NW Angle report ?

Recommended Posts

Rodric Christensen

We have a group heading up to the NW Angle on sleds tomorrow. We will be staying on Oak Island & fishing for a couple of days. We were wondering if anyone has any recent fishing reports from up there. We keep hearing all the slow reports from the south end, and were hoping things were a little better up that way.

Where are you staying?

I have got a couple emails from friends, and the fishing has been pretty decent.

You should be in the ball park, then.

Are you fishing in portables?

33 inch Walleye----- WOW ! Will check their web site from time to time to see that one.

Was up in the Angle for about 3 days over New Years, the fishing is getting really good up there around Oak, lots of nicer fish being caught. I started off the New Years right with a 28 1/4 walleye on New Years morning! A friend of mine caught a 29 1/2 later that afternoon as well. The gang at Oak will take good care of you. You will have a great time for sure! Good Luck

Where do you launch your sleds on the south? How long of a ride is it up there?

Thanks,

Tully

Normally a good place to unload and take off from is the public access boat ramp by Wheelers point but as of lately they have not been keeping it very cleared of snow so I'm not sure if that's still possible. The ride north normally runs about and hour and a half give or take depending on how you ride. It's approx, 40 miles from Wheelers point to Oak Island.

Ya, I've been up that way about 3 times already. Spent 4 days up there over New Years! Good time and great fishing up there right now. Finally found some nice fish! The first fish of the year was a 28 1/4 on New Years morning, what a way to start out! Definitly going to be hard to get out there. I have a couple suggestions for ya on your placement,I'll send ya an e-mail! wink

We are heading up to Flag March 10-13 on our sleds. We fish up there every June, this will be my first ice trip. Any suggested areas that might produce this time of year? I'm sure Dan will have a pretty good idea of where they are. This is torture reading all these reports and I am stuck on land.

I would spend about 20 minutes with Dan and he'll get you pointed in the right direction. There's not too many people up there that know the Angle and the fishing hot spots like Dan does! Good Luck

We just got back from our trip to Oak and had a great time. We had good fishing and the trail was in great shape. They have been grooming and there is certainly plenty of snow. We fished 2 people per house and averaged 40-50 fish per house per day. A lot of nice quality eyes in that 15-17" range and 4 in the 22-24" range. We rode the sleds to the rental shacks so the gals could come and go as they pleased. We rode back into the lodge for lunch and refreshments each day etc., so we didn't even hit the fishing as hard as we do some trips. Those numbers could have been higher if we would have, but everyone had a blast and we plan on doing it again sometime.

Kitchen staff is a big issue. The cook got fired recently but overall it’s owned/managed by not the brightest people. Same owners at moosebirds. I think they’re in over their heads. They had good pizza imo until they switched to the stupid wood fire pizza oven and created their own crappy crust recipe. They’ve been changing menus weekly and jacking prices-I’m sure some of that is reflecting the increased cost of groceries but not impressed at all lately. I know someone who works there and the help isn’t very happy either. Wolf bay is where it’s at lol.

      August bite is pretty good.

BigV..... how things can change in a day. I fished from 8:15 until 11:45 this morning when I caught walleye #50. Probably the best morning ive ever had on the lake. Lindy rig and half crawler was the method. This morning when you graphed those pods of fish they bit.  As far as the lake in July and August? Personally August is my favorite month. Typically when you locate fish they bite. Wind blown areas holding perch minnows is what I concentrate on. Quite often it's sand pockets for me. That was the key today as the fish were coughing up perch minnows. Fishing always snaps back into shape when they get off the bugs. Soon the basin will be alive with the trollers. I really like the leadcore bite. Usually the quality of the fish caught is quite good. I'll be fishing walleyes the rest of the week hopefully continuing to report an improved bite.

Same! It’s been terrible for me. I always blame myself but I feel like rumor around the lake is that it isn’t worth fishing for walleyes after June or before September. I hope that’s not the case and it is just me lacking knowledge.

Excellent report Muskies!  Thank you!  Also really appreciate the pictures that you include in your posts.  We are looking forward to being on the lake boat camping in 16 days.

Fished Whitefish both Sunday and Monday from about 6AM until 10AM each day. Used only artificial lures.  Trolled  weed edges some of the time with Shad Raps #8 size, and then a little deeper with the #9 size Flicker Minnow.  Only caught one 29 inch Northern trolling.  Spent about 1/2 of the time casting  a jig and soft plastic into about 12 ft to 18 ft  where there were decent, but not great weeds.  Caught  several small Northerns plus 2 more that were 27" and 28".   The bonus was a 17.5" Largemouth.  No Walleyes either day.   Monday had several "bite offs" on the soft plastics.  That is kinda the problem with using them where there are Pike.

Timber Bay Lodge is a good spot, I always go there when I go to birch lake.
