NW Angle report ?

Recommended Posts

Rodric Christensen

We have a group heading up to the NW Angle on sleds tomorrow. We will be staying on Oak Island & fishing for a couple of days. We were wondering if anyone has any recent fishing reports from up there. We keep hearing all the slow reports from the south end, and were hoping things were a little better up that way.

Where are you staying?

I have got a couple emails from friends, and the fishing has been pretty decent.

You should be in the ball park, then.

Are you fishing in portables?

We are bringing the gals along and doing a couples trip, so will just fish out of the rental shacks on this one.

33 inch Walleye----- WOW ! Will check their web site from time to time to see that one.

Was up in the Angle for about 3 days over New Years, the fishing is getting really good up there around Oak, lots of nicer fish being caught. I started off the New Years right with a 28 1/4 walleye on New Years morning! A friend of mine caught a 29 1/2 later that afternoon as well. The gang at Oak will take good care of you. You will have a great time for sure! Good Luck

Where do you launch your sleds on the south? How long of a ride is it up there?

Thanks,

Tully

Normally a good place to unload and take off from is the public access boat ramp by Wheelers point but as of lately they have not been keeping it very cleared of snow so I'm not sure if that's still possible. The ride north normally runs about and hour and a half give or take depending on how you ride. It's approx, 40 miles from Wheelers point to Oak Island.

Ya, I've been up that way about 3 times already. Spent 4 days up there over New Years! Good time and great fishing up there right now. Finally found some nice fish! The first fish of the year was a 28 1/4 on New Years morning, what a way to start out! Definitly going to be hard to get out there. I have a couple suggestions for ya on your placement,I'll send ya an e-mail! wink

We are heading up to Flag March 10-13 on our sleds. We fish up there every June, this will be my first ice trip. Any suggested areas that might produce this time of year? I'm sure Dan will have a pretty good idea of where they are. This is torture reading all these reports and I am stuck on land.

I would spend about 20 minutes with Dan and he'll get you pointed in the right direction. There's not too many people up there that know the Angle and the fishing hot spots like Dan does! Good Luck

We just got back from our trip to Oak and had a great time. We had good fishing and the trail was in great shape. They have been grooming and there is certainly plenty of snow. We fished 2 people per house and averaged 40-50 fish per house per day. A lot of nice quality eyes in that 15-17" range and 4 in the 22-24" range. We rode the sleds to the rental shacks so the gals could come and go as they pleased. We rode back into the lodge for lunch and refreshments each day etc., so we didn't even hit the fishing as hard as we do some trips. Those numbers could have been higher if we would have, but everyone had a blast and we plan on doing it again sometime.

Any updates as to the slush conditions on Vermilion, particularly off the staked trails?

i keep hearing that this slush wont freeze up. i just cant fathom that with the low temps forecasted it wont?????????   anyone else with thoughts????

Yeah I tried the wrench yesterday. I Can't get it to move with a load on it. With no load on the jack it does go up and down with the electric motor though. I ended up ordering a whole new jack since they're only $200. This one I'll take apart and try to fix it and keep it as a spare.

Was out checking ice.....on west side....even though there is good ice closer to shore, when neighbor was trying to plow a road out farther, a lot of water was coming out of a crack. Please do not go out with a larger truck!!!!!

I'm also thinking about going up this weekend. We were thinking about Barnacles or Red Door. It will be our first time out of either resorts. Any recommendation or opinions about the resorts and their roads? Thanks in advance!

Thank you.. and thanks for the advise on the Duluth forum! I will look that up and subscribe.

Thanks for your response! Sounds like fishing is pretty much the same on this end as Ontonagon. Aside from the rock reefs and possibility of snags on the bottom. I don't run lead core but have a pair of downriggers and some dipsies. I fish a lot on the surface with my Otter Boats with Rapalas and some spoons. I always run at least one dodger or flasher in the mix with a Howie's fly or a spin n glo behind it. Thanks again for your input! I appreciate it! Hopefully I can have a good weekend fishing!

Glad your back Bryan! So far my season hasn't been one for the books but it haven’t been horrible. I’ve been waiting for your videos good to see your back man!

Thanks for the input!  I definitely don't want to snag one of my rigger weights! I have otter boats I run off a mast on both side of the boat. I run surface spoons and stick baits off the lines. Works well out of Ontonagon and sounds like it will work here also. I have a few dipsies also but do not have lead core on any of my set ups. I run a flasher or dodger on one of my lines also. Usually on one of my dipsies. I pretty much sounds like fishing off Ontonagon except for the snags on the bottom of the north shore. Thanks for your wisdom! I appreciate it!

I drove by the lake this weekend and saw a large amount of vehicles and houses out there.  We are finding the crappies either out deep in the holes suspended or they are hugging weeds.  I know huge difference but don't be afraid to go shallow or deep.  I wasn't too far from Crystal fishing 6 feet of water Saturday fishing cabbage and getting a mixed bag of panfish, pike, and bass coming through.
