I wasn't on Nest (can't handle that many people) but I did get out on Saturday and marked 55 degs. on the lake I was fishing. Managed to catch quite a few nice big sunfish. they definately are up shallow feeding. I just wish some people would toss some of the bigger females back, rather than keeping everyone they catch.

What was the bite? panfish or walleyes? I know its not pike, locals don't go all out for pike.-

There hasn't been one report this whole month. Have the lakes all dried up? whistle Nobody needs to provide coordinates or even mention the lake, but it would be to read other peoples success stories.

I hate to admit it, but I haven't been on a lake yet this year. My busy time starts about the end of April and slows down by mid June. Hopefully, I'll get out one of these days.

Heading out to one of the area lakes “I still have yet to decide” hoping for something more than a bunch of 13” walleyes, would like to catch some keepers for the freezer!! I will give a report later.

I've been out a few times opening weekend was really good for Northerns. the two of us managed to catch 6 in about 3 hours of fishing. We had a 29.5", 27", 26", 24" and the others were smaller. Bass opener I was out on North Long for the first time and we caught 25-30 bass. The biggest was only around 16".

both large and small mouth have been extremely active on green, my son had Leech 21's elusive smallie on yesterday but snapped his kiddie set up when dad tried to land it. never had one on that big before, can see how that might get a little obsessive! go out to mid lake structure, sit on the break and toss some plastic down the drop off. if you have the wife or kids along just bobber up and put on some leeches. might even catch an eye or crappie to boot.

Went to Lake Florida, tried many different things, no Walleyes boated. The only thing that was consistent was the Perch bite they were tough on the leeches (Brad will appreciate that).

Not Sure if you tryed this but usually if the perch are bittin I throw on a perch colored shad rap that will most times produce a few eyes.

pushbutton.....you need to show me where that elusive 21" smallie is living, lol!!!! I nailed one earlier this year that went 20.25 inches.

Otherwise fishings been good. Was out last Monday and put 3 eyes in the boat. A 24, 19, and a 17.5.

The sheepshead had the feedbags on during the Norway Lake Association tourney on Saturday. My party had 2 boats with 4 anglers per boat. Over the 4 hours of the tourney we boated more than 70 sheepshead with the largest being just a hair under 4 pounds. What a blast!

tj or anyone in the sheepshead know,

have heard about norways sheepies the last few years on this forum.....could you post some details on how, when, where to catch them. i would like to get out there and try it this summer, dont think your going to create a mad run and ruin the lake by giving out specifics wink

Just go out there and try fishing for eyes.Minnows or leeches, crawlers. You'll find plenty sheepies.

i guess i have that covered then.......really good at fishing for eyes and catching something else!!!

Yeah, if you're fishing for eyes, you will undoubtedly catch the sheepies. They are plentiful in Games/Norway. My best luck's been on crawlers.

Do yourself a favor--bring a few home, fillet them, and fry them; they are very tasty. Just don't overcook them.

i was thinking the smoker..... think they are in the freshwater drum family and supposed to be good table fare. hard to think that something that ugly could taste good, but will probably take a shot at it.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
