How much water is on the ice? I am coming up there this weekend and am wondering if I should have knee high boots or do I need to bring the chest waders.

Posted

I would also like to know, think the ice will still be safe to drive on this weekend

youll need your extension still so the ice is plenty thick watch out for the ridges though!!!

I hear the ice is shifting a lot. Does anyone know if the presure ridge is crossable out of the public access out of Warroad?

Is it no way for a 2WD?
Thanks!

Hunter,
There is that one big breaker to contend
with, other than that a 4 wheel drive
truck shouldnt have trouble.
We went out of Springsteel last Sunday and
the breaker got ugly later in the day.
Some poor guy Baja'd the thing with a Mini
Van....looked like some damage was done. We
went over it with the Suburban no problem.
Finally someone went out and shaved the
breaker down a little..
4 wheel drive to be safe....very soon it
will be 4 wheelers and snocats only.

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

Went out of Borderview last weekend. They had their houses 10+ miles out and we had to cross two large heaves to get out. One appeared overnight! By the end of both days, there was 8-10" of water standing were Adrians road starts and the ice was cracking the enire time we were out there. I would recommend 4x4's. If you're on a sled/ATV, bring the raingear. Saw some dudes that were pretty wet!

My buddy was out yesterday afternoon and he said that by Pine Island the water was almost up to his doors, and he drives a Jeep(CJ7 style) Once past the water its fine though.

In the long point area there was really not a lot of water, just some potholes, a rough spot and a crack. Other than that the bulk of the lake is snow and water free. Easy to move around. That was Saturday.

Just got home here from Lake of the Woods. I fish across Pine Island on the Adrian's Road. The landing at the Wigwam has lots of deep ruts, and the island is terrrible for crossing. It's 4 wheel drive pickups only as I saw even them getting stuck! The other option is 4 wheelers, or the bombers! I had a large house on wheels to remove, and did so, but I couldn't get it across the island. So I made a hole through a break, off county road #4 west of Morris Point known as Graceton Beach. I advise anyone with a house that is not on skids to remove it very soon in that area. The ice is still thick, but the water is getting deep in small areas, and so are the holes and ruts. By the way are fishing was pretty good too!

If you bring your Snowcat or wheelers and are planning on heading North to the reefs, (Bridges, Knight) You need to know that there is a wide crack about 15 miles out on the snowmobile trail. We were finally able to cross it with a little searching and some manual labor but bring along a tow rope and some other friends to go out with. You might have to pull the timid across the crack with your tow rope! Once across though the fishing on the Shoals and various reefs is quite good and is worth the trip. Don't forget the sunscreen!

Fished across Pine Is. on Sat. and Sun. Fishing was excellent for us with many, many nice eyes up to 8lbs. All houses were pulled on Sunday. The ice is still passable by ATV but their is no way I'd venture out with a pickup any more. I heard of at least 8-10 trucks that broke through this weekend and were close calls. We were probably in the last 5 vehicles of any sort to leave that area of the lake at dark, and the lake was pretty much barren as far as the eye could see before we left. The fish are transitioning to the shallows now for anyone wanting to venture across the island with atv's. Last hour or so of light in 20-22' of water towards the washout is best. The eyes went nuts the last half hour before dark. Wish I could get back out there this week. Most fun I've had all winter since Thanksgiving weekend.

one of the trucks still had its front end in the ice as of this morning when we left, If you were on 4 mile yesterday evening I am sure you seen it. even with a four wheeler it would be tough to get out of the road or over the breakers.

Pop ups have increased for me for a while now. Timed to cover my usual taps about the time I would tap.

So there is a boat on a friend's property, has been there for about 4 years, with no contact from owner, and she is unreachable. It was last registered in 2020. Is there any way for him to make it his, legally?

I'm getting a lot of popups adds. Just wondering if it's just my computer or is every one getting them?

Birds at home have been quiet and out of sight. Not sure where they went. Last year they wouldn’t respond to calls - until they did. But that will be common until the girls quit being friendly.

I've seen about 60 turkeys in 1.5 days of hunting thus far. Unfortunately they are not responding to calls or decoys and the only birds that have walked within range are hens. It's just a waiting game now. Deer hunting for turkeys, hoping a legal one walks past before I have to quit in a few days...

A bunch of webcams available these days to see progress as well: https://lakevermilionresorts.com/webcams/ Looks to be pulling away from shore. I expect ice out between next Friday and Sunday based on temps in the forecast. Some sun and then some wind would get it going quickly.

But wait Meg, there's more! Anyway, do you like fishing? Trolling's kind of fun! 🤭

Well lol, Google is your friend! 🤭 Yes, the 2012 movie "Loon Lake" was filmed in Minnesota. Specifically, it was shot in southwest Minnesota, with locations including Round Lake, Pioneer Village, and Jackson County. The film is also based on a local legend from southwest Minnesota about a witch who lived by Loon Lake.

Well indeed there is a movie and the trailer will help you near down the 25 lakes a lot by just checking into the Loon Lakes in Southwest, MN. Should be easy now. Have fun. Eager to escape the grief and nightmares of the city, Louis Olsen travels to Southwest Minnesota, seeking the peace of the rural countryside. When he accidentally disturbs the grave of a supposed local 'witch' Mary Jane Terlinden, what began as a peaceful reprieve unravels into a haunting nightmare from which Louis cannot escape - but is it all just in his head?

Great. That's usually a good sign for ice break-up.
