2020 Cass Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

That's a little early in the year for the prime 'pout bite. I have had some pretty good luck as early as Christmas during some years though. Pike Bay has very good 'pout activity on some of the deeper humps. A 1/4oz glow perch buckshot spoon loaded with two mashed up fatheads has been my best producer.

Well spearing on kitchie was a little cloudy. it appeared that it will need some time to clear out and the lake just had froze over the week before i was there. this happened a couple years ago also when we had late ice. so in january it should be better. you can still see but not as clear as last year! Andrusia and buck appeared to be the same, a light haze in the water but not bad.

Cass Master

Have you been there in the last few days at all on andrusia?

Pulled a 50 1/2" muskie up yesterday morning - quite a tussle on 6 lb fluoro with a medium-light action rod! Successful CPR - I'll post the pics once the guy who took them sends them to me.

I've pulled a half-dozen pout out of Pike Bay this year in about 20 fow, right at first dark. Not sure when they crank up on Cass or how deep though.

I've always had my best luck with pout between February and March, when they're spawning. That's good to hear there's some pout action happening already.

Night fishing for eye's is usually pretty steady. I usually fish right at sunset to about an hour or two after and that's when I have my best luck.

Give me a call next time you're in the area, Cass. Never too hard to twist my arm and get me out there fishing!

I haven't seen any waves at all since it froze over. Oh - THOSE breakers. I haven't seen any of those either.

Can anyone recommend a good resort near allen bay. Looking at coming up June 12. Used to fish Winne but thought I would like to try Cass area. Mainly panfish.

i will second sunset cove. we have been taking our family vacation up there the last five years in august. last year we also went up over the fourth of the july and it was a blast. awesome firework show and a good party outside of the bar with a band. fishing should be really good when you're planning on going in june. we are heading up the on the 21st to do some ice fishing, sounds like the walleyes have biting well and they should be on the jumbos by the time we get there.just give Al a call and even if their booked up he will point you in the right direction for a place to stay.

ten days ago there was around 16 inches of ice under the snow. not sure what it looks like now after this warm up. hopefully we will still be able to get around with the truck, and this warm weather didn't turn it all to slush. i guess we will find out on thursday when we get there.

I am new to this, so bear with me. I have been going to cass lake for 4 years and need some help. I want to catch walleye, perch, and crappie and need to know where I go and what type of bait to use. I am there the 2nd week of June for a week. Any help would be great. Where do I go on lake andrusia, or in allens bay or on cass to catch some fish. I am a woman that loves to fish and do alot of fishing in illinois, but need some big time help on the big lake.

we had a guide the 2nd year, but didn't catch much of anything. I still have the gps coords from that trip-- do they work from year to year? I was told to use leeches and that's ok, but I heard using a crankbait in the evening trolling close to shore works also. I wish I had more than 1 week to fish the big area. I did catch a couple in andrusia by the house on the hill, any other areas? Thanks for all your help

That is an excellent week to fish on Cass.

We have been going for 30+ yrs now....started for 10 yrs at opener, then 10 yrs at Memorial Day, and the last 10+ after school gets out 'cause the kids started coming with the dads.

We have very good luck for multi-species then. We do not fish Andrusia, but hit Allen's Bay hard and Kitchi and Pike Bay...it all depends on wind too though.

it seems that if you don't catch fish, everyone wants to move to a smaller lake, like lost lake to catch panfish. I would like to continue on cass lake and the chains, so am seeking all the help i can get early in the season. I need to know what type of lures to get. I'll be staying in touch. Thanks again

thanks for everything. I know this is not the time of year to be thinking of spring fishing, but just underwent quad bypass surgery and need to think of bright things in my life. I would like to knock the socks off of the other 10 beginner fishing persons that tag along and give them some hints. It's hard when you are trying to teach others what to do that have never been fishing before and still try to catch some decent fish. I guess that is why all the questions, and I know fishermen DO NOT like to give up the areas fish are biting and give out secrets, but if anyone can dangle a few hints of the trade, will be well worth it for me. I will get ahold of the guide as soon as possible. Thanks again for everything

What type of lures should I bring for all of us? There will be approx 14 of us coming and want to make sure I have enough for all of us and the right kind. Thanks for all the info. I appreciate it.

That night it was a CJS lighting spoon. Tonight though it was your basic minnow and red hook on a deadstick.

I would go with some Rapala 5 or 7. As for color, any color will do as long as it is chartreuse! Just kidding, though chartreuse does work. I am partial to silver and black (go White Sox) also silver and blue, black and blue and perch. Just leave a few wallys for me when we get there the end of July!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
