Those are some nice slabs man! Thats really good for metro fish. It looks like a zoo out there, at least we know ice fishing isn't a dying sport.

I like the idea of putting the screen name on the ice house, only problem is that people will be able to ID me and know where the hot spot is wink

right now you can drive any place on the lake except for a few drifts on the lake there isnt much snow, the ones that plow the roads are Intowne Marina just off of Lake Street in Waconia

hey burnham if you live in the anoka area we should hook up sometime and catch a few. I live right off main street near target. coon rapids. But I tend to drive a good hour each way usually to locate some nice fish. t.marquardt @ yahoo.com

Hey Guys.

Wondering if anyone hits the east side of the lake. I was thinking about getting out there wednesday and thursday afternoon/evening. Red's looks like a good walleye spot. Never been on the lake before. Would think the eyes have moved out to main lake structure. Looking for any suggestions.

I was thinking about dropping in at the public access on the east side. I will be on a black polaris 800 snowmobile and fish trap guide. Stop by and say hi. Will probably be doing a lot of spot hopping. thanks

yeah reds usually does well in the winter for walleyes if you can find it (need GPS) otherwise andersons does farely well for walleyes as well. I would suggest staying out of any groups, they tend to push walleyes out of the area GOOD LUCK!

Dave - The house you are next to is indeed my house. We will have to hook up some time ou there. My house will probably be getting moved away from the crowds as soon as i have time and the ice allows. Which house is yours? Direction from my house?

Tom, I moved mine off there on new years day. We took it up to Minnewaska over the long weekend.

Ours was the one just out from your house. It has white vinyl siding with a brown stripe and silver doors. We were only there for a week. The only night that I did fairly good was the night right before I took the house off.

Dave, Wish I woulda saw you were out last night I woulda stopped by and said hi. My son is not into Ice fishing this year, so I'm usually out alone. Only caught 4 crappies last night, this morning I marked alot of fish, but they were too light of biters. Then My wife called and guilted me to come home early.

I was all alone too. My son isn't too into ice fishing this year either. Maybe after the "shine" wears off of his new toys he got for x-mas he will want to go again.

Hey all. I've been on the "get together on Waconia" thread and somehow had missed this one. I'm new to fishing Waconia and could sure use some tips on what all these names of places mean! I've only been on the SE corner, on the hump that juts out from shore (does it have a name?). I wanted the W side, but saw that it looked a bit overpopulated. Anyways, what are all these names people keep throwing out there?! "Pillsbury", "Center", "Reds", etc... Not trying to steal spots, just want to know exactly what people are talking about. Thanks!

Hi JW, sounds like you may be on andersons, I'm still turned around out there. Reds reef is to the right if launching from east landing off of 92. Center and pillsbury are out from in-towne on the ice road. Stop in at the marina, they are great, you can get bait, jigs, food, and look at their map of the lake.

Good luck!!

Thanks for that. However, I'm new to the entire Waconia area. Not sure what or where In-towne is... I typically search around the DNR Recreation Compass to find new lakes and that only shows me where the DNR accesses are, so that's what I use. I came off the DNR access on the E side and went SSW. Looking at a road map, if you were to drive straight W off of Island View Rd and into the lake, that's where I was. There is a small shallow finger there that sticks out and doesn't follow the shoreline. We dropped the AQvu and it was pretty barren down there with a silty bottom. Obviously the W side of the lake seems to be pretty popular and we try to avoid the ice cities if possible, so we stayed where we were. Flasher was showing activity ALL day, but it was all Perch. Seemed pretty small, too. What's the bottom makeup under the "ice city" over there? I'm assuming that the city is on top of the 20' hole and extends over to the 5' hump there on the WSW side? Sorry for being so needy, just trying to find some consistently decent fishing!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
