Lake Minnewaska Fishing Reports - Ice Conditions

Recommended Posts

Really...wow! How big was it?

When you say "caught"...did you get it up the hole?

Can you or did you keep it? I don't even know if there are state slots...never fish them.

Any photos?

Thanks for the post...very interesting.

Jake...free as far as I know. There are some prizes, etc. It started out as an Ice Fishing Get Together and we are just making it a little more fun. Hot dogs...on the lake I believe...as well. Show sounds great...I remember you talking about it awhile back. I can be your aquatic specialist for the show. smile Maybe we can get my property make-over show going as well! Have your people contact my people and we will talk. wink

Chilly...the best eye bite has been around the School Bars in 19 to 20 fow. This is a big area with several nooks and crannies. We can look over the 1 ft. contour map if you want and pick some spots. We see them swimming around during the day...just gotta get'em to bite! They get more active @ 3 pm with prime time @ 5 to 7 with some fish up til 9 or so. Most fish are the 15 to 16 inch but they are fat!

Caught a muskie yesterday about 4:30 yesterday..shiner and hook in 13 fow on the Glenwood end. I saw it on the camera and it attacked the minnow from 8-10 feet away. fun to watch.

I was wondering if they were still in there? There can't be to many left. I spend many hours out there in the summer time and I have never even seen one. Does anyone else have any sightings?

Yes , caught, as in , it was in my hand when I was removing the hook. It was small, maybe 20" - it is back in the lake. Saw 4 pike and 2 walleye also. They got close but no takers.

If you are heading west today...temps are around 25 to 27 already with light now around here. Roads are being maintained and travel and roads look fine...just take it easy. Winds are low thru the day and should be a nice day on the ice. Conditions look similar for the rest of the weekend.

The Scouts have their fishing derby Saturday and if anyone is interested in that. They also put on a great pancake and sausage breakfest at the Senior Center on Sunday morning as a fundraiser. Pretty cheap and a great breakfest! If you are around, they would appreciate your support.

Next weekend is Winterama with many activities including the Polar Plung.

Nice pix of our fisk house jake! You must have been using the Hunts house, they have been suspiciously close to us on every move!

My buddy overheard someone at the bar say they were keying in on our moves as well, i guess we have a reputation, LOL!

Jason F. (Schwanny)...getting your emails but when I send them they come back as an error. Not sure what is going on.

Not sure how much snow we got but that coule be around a foot. It is light fluffy snow however so you kinda blow through it driving. I know there are several roads plowed on the lake and more being plowed so I think you should still be able to get around with not much trouble.

I think the sunfish bite has picked up out from Lakeside. I have heard from a couple of guys that catch over a hundred a day and keep 10 or so of the biggest ones. I was out yesterday in a different spot and kept a few sunnies and one big perch. I was getting a better bite using shrimp. A lot of pike would come in, harass the shiners and then swim off. They looked to have full bellies. Had an eye come in and just about take a shiner until the shiner swam around him...must have been too much work so it swam off as well. Seen a lot of sunnies down there but had to work them to get them to bite. Frustrating looking at all of those fish and they just swim off... cry

The access off Lakeside Ballroom is plowed and goes right out to where they are fishing the sunnies.

That's fishing...

Nice! Gotta get some shows going. :-)

Just got off the lake from moving a fish house. With the snow, the Argo is really handy! Not sure if I was working or playing. :-)

We are thinking of heading out tomorrow for eyes. Got a new spot...not far from the old spot...but new anyway. We are going to try a new spot on the break. We keep seeing walleyes but just can't find what they want to eat.

If you think you can make it down, send a post, email and text. Might try to go out around 3 or 4 depending on if you are coming down or not. Earlier would be nicer to see if we can observe some eyes on the camera before dark.

Maybe all it takes are the eyes knowing they can be on TV if they cooperate?

Plenty of snow on the lake but my buddy didn't have any problem getting around with his Suburban...except when he got a little close to the fish house where the drift was...then I got to try out my winch. :-)

Jake cruised through your video's. Nice job, it can only get better with time, and of course FISH ON. Really great to see people of the younger generation interested in this great out door activity.

When I was your age, geez I wish I still were, I had an uncle who lived in Glenwood. We spent lots of hours on Waska, and had a ball catching the eyes. Haven't been over your way in a long time though. Keep up the great work on the videos, really interesting.

PS I have a hot tip on a lake by Upsala, called Cedar. Big Bass. smile

Hey Landdr, thanks for all the information you put on this site. I was wondering if you rented camera or vexilars at your bait shop. Planned on trying to catch some of them 12 inch crappie this Monday, and thought a camera would help to locate them before we set the house. Thanks

Ibleedice...Cameras yes...flashers no. Camera during the day...flasher for evening should help a lot.

Jake...got swamped yesterday and only got out to set up house and drill some holes. I fished for maybe a 1/2 hour but then had to head to basketball. Too much to do today but we are thinking Friday has a chance. Let me know if anything works out for you.

Roads are nicely plowed for the most part but it really isn't too bad driving off the roads with a 4wd truck...just watch for any banks that were created around houses.

I have not heard anything recently on the panfish bite. I sure had a lot coming in on the flasher after dark and think it was either sunfish or crappie...didn't have the right stuff along to try them out. I hope to give it a good effort tomorrow.

See some of the reports above for lake conditions and fishing...but in summary...

"Roads are nicely plowed for the most part but it really isn't too bad driving off the roads with a 4wd truck...just watch for any banks that were created around houses."

No slush that I am aware of and I don't expect any. There is around 24 inches of ice and I don't think we got enough snow to create any weight issues at this time. We drilled several holes last night and no water came up those holes either. My buddy was driving his Suburban without issue and I have my 4wd Ford Escape driving around without issue as well. There are some snow banks around the edges of houses so keep away from those and you should be fine.

Anyone staying out Saturday night on the lake will have a great front row seat for the Winterama Fireworks...it will certainly light up the lake!!!

Where do they launch those from? Is it near the beach like they do during the summer or just in front of lakeside?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
