What is your preferred gun for coyote and fox

I'm a BIG fan of my Mauser 7.62 mm.

I'm the only guy I know of that uses this rifle. Most of the guys I know use 22-250, 222, and 223, with the 22-250 being the most popular.

on a good day, I use my AR 15 in 223. On windy days (20+ mph) I use a 243 with a 70 gr. bullet.

BG is right, he might be the only guy using a 7.62 for fox. The other calibers he listed are great as well

I should have added that I use the 7.62mm because, besides my .22, that's the only rifle I own.

Nope, it's a 7.62 x 54.

I've been told (don't know if it's truth or not) that the 7.62 rounds can be used in a .308, but .308 rounds can not be shot through the 7.62. Is this fact??? I have no idea. Quite honestly I'm not a rifle expert. Out here on the prairie we mainly use shotguns for birds and deer.

I hate the metric system. Water should boil at 212 degrees and not 100 degrees. 100 degrees is bathtub warm water, not boiling.

Oh, 7.62 x 54R??? that is not the same as a 308. the NATO marking for the .308 is 7.62, kind of like .223 rounds are 5.56

You might be able to ram a 308 in your gun but I wouldn't pull that trigger. You're right, you might be the only one using that gun for coyotes. That is almost a howitzer....of course if you aren't worried about saving the pelts, it is more than adequate

my calling/posting rig is a ruger m77 stainless in .22-250 with a 4.5-16 42mm scheels scope.

for walking cattails, and other heavy cover, a tricked out sks 7.62x39 with an aimpoint on top.

shotgun is a winchester superx2 with a new carlsons full turkey choke, or my patternmaster extended choke.

those are the 3 guns ive taken the most fox/yotes with, but have shot em with pretty much everything in my gun cabinet, from 10/22's to remington 700 in .270, to a single shot 30" barrel full choke winchester shot gun...and even a beretta 92fs pistol.

Coyote= rem 788 22-250, w 3.5 X 14 scope 55 grn spitzers

Fox .17 Rem, model 700 with VX3 6.5 - 20, 25 grn Bergers.

Both guns will cross over well.

My varmint gun is just an ordinary .223 Savage 110 with a 3x9 scope, but my oldest son has been working with a stainless Ruger 77 in .243 with a heavy barrel, laminated stock and a 4X15 scope. He has it doped out all the way to 400 yards. He says that at that range he has to learn to shoot between heartbeats.

A while back, I burned up some experimental handloads on critters that were 200 grain slugs in my .338 Win mag. Not a recomended varmint gun...

223 and 22-250 is what i use 4-12 on 223- 2 -16 on 22-250 both great. bullet drops very little on 22-250 4 inches or so at 400 yards.

how high are you sighted in at 100 to get a 4" drop at 400???

I have a few new choices I picked up a few weeks ago. Remington model 700 VTR in 204, DPMS low profile classic in 223, Savage model 10 predator hunter in 22-250 and a Remington R-15 (AR-15) VTR in 223.

Only ones sighted in are the ARs.

I also have a Thompson encore with a 243 barrel and a 25-06 barrel.

Remington BDL 22-250 with Leupold scope

Remington 700 BDL -243 with a Leupold scope

Remington 700 heavy barrel 223 with a 4x16x40 scope

All three of these will more than get the job done.

my son and i went out this afternoon and i snapped a couple of photos, i shoot a .243, pulls double duty for me with deer hunting. and he shoots a .22 mag, scope he got for x-mas.

I sight in at 200 ther is a 2 inch or so change t0 100. so it doesnt mater in that close it makes a differance at longer ranges.

I have taken one out for fox (never had one come in, but I know they are still around that farm). at short range (less than 75 yards) it could do the job. I personally don't think it is a good choice

alot of arguing about the 17hmr and coyotes, i've shot 1 at somewhat close range 70 yards or so and bang flop. i think of it this way, it may not be the best choice i personally like my ar223 but i don't think many humans would survive many shots to the chest with a 17 standing out at a 100 yards.

For "close quarters" work, I use a Rem 1100 with a Dead Coyote tube and #4 buck.

The "traditional" rifle I use is a .243 Rem 700 shooting either 58gr or 70gr.

But my "go to" gun is my 18" Super Match custom AR, chambered in 6.8SPC shooting a 90gr Speer TNT. If I do my part, this little beauty will shoot inside a top end .308 out to 300+ yards!!

He listed it as 6.8spc which is the military's answer right now to the .223 not having the manstopper power of the ol' 30-06. but the 6.8 kicks a little more than a .223 (just from reading, not experience here) but it is very manageable in the AR set up.
