It aways seems like a great idea (and it is!)
A bunch of guys meeting somewhere for the
first time to sit and [PoorWordUsage] for a while.
It rarely works out.
We headed from 16 mile reef at 6pm. It was
after 6:30 when we got off the ice! 7 ish
when we pulled into Springsteel. Still no
fish cleaned and man were we STINKIN'.
I drove back to the Patch to leave a note
saying that we WOULD be there but not till
8:30. Left it with the gal at the till and
asked her to watch for suspicious characters.
We got back to the Patch at 8:30 on the nose
and the nice waitress said nobody came in
looking for anyone.
It is too easy to get tied up or real late.
It is impossible to "meet up" out on the lake
too. It is a big place. Besides, ice fishing
is done in a tiny house with a small window(not much visiting done that way)
A real get together would rent one of the
huge Log Cabins at Zipple Bay Resort or the
Big lodge at Borderview. Hows that for a
big job for someone, to make and hold reservations for 20 people they've never met
before.
I hope some people stopped out at Rock Harbor
Saturday....
We will try again next time.

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

We had FM get together our at Vermilion ealier this year that seemed to have a decent turnout. Everyone met at the access at the Fortune Bay and went out and fished together for a while. Some actually stayed at the casino hotel at a discount rate. It did seem to take some time to iron out the details (I wasn't in on that but somethings seemed to be up the air until the last minute).
I think that these get togethers could be a fun thing and get some people to hit some new water and meet new people.

We had a GREAT FM get-together out of Ely in Feb for a Laker Fishing Party. It went great but it was in the works for a while. I think there was about 20 of us all together.
We also had a LOTW get together in January but it was rough cause it was so cold and windy it was just about impossible to [PoorWordUsage] at all.
Get-togethers are a great idea, but they take a little planning.

Tell me about it!!LOL

Well darn, I did'nt even know about this??? I was busy moving huts the last week or so, with a bit of fishing thrown in, and have'nt been on this box much. Saturday nite I was even tipping a few in Warroad too!
Fisky

Jigster.
The bite seemed to be fading from what it
was on Thursday.
Lots of little guys, we wound up keeping
12 Walleyes and Saugers, a dozen nice big
Perch and 16 suprise Tullibees.
Sunday morning off of South Point it was
slower yet, a bunch of little fish and 1
Walleye, 1 Sauger, 1 Pike and about 3 good
fish we never got to see.
Sure nice weather to fish in though!
Fisky,
Sooner or later we will have to bump into
each other and speak.......another close call.

------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

We hammered eye's, perch and saugers on the west side of sixteen both Saturday and Sunday. I was too darn tired from catching fish and tending to my sunburned face to even get over to the patch!

Posted

Curt, we didn't make it over there either. We didn't get back to the room until 7, put dinner in the crock pots and didn't eat until 8:15. By the time we were done eating, cleaning up, tending to sunburns we just didn't feel up for the challenge of going over to the bar. We also figured that you would be ready to go watch the Man Show by the time we arrived, so we opted for bed and an early rise for our last day of fishing.
I would be willing to take on the challenge of booking something on LOW for an FM gathering, that is with a little help from a local, like yourself or Fisky.
Sorry we missed ya, hopefully we can meet up again.
[This message has been edited by Grabs (edited 03-17-2003).]

Grabs,
We were on the west side of 16 all day
Saturday too. We turned left at the pine
tree and stopped not to far from the big
homely grey fishhouse. There was an orange
fishhouse about a quarter of a mile further
out than we were.
See what I mean about getting together while
ice fishing. We could have been within
50 yards of each other and never knew it!
I have been standing right next to Fiskyknut
and didnt figure it out till later.
You gotta make it so every stays at the
same place and WEARS NAMETAGS!!!!!!!!
Good Fishin All!!!!
------------------
Curt Quesnell
NorthCountry Outdoors Radio

I'm up for the challenge, lets make something happen for around this time next year.
What local wants to help me out?

Surface Tension made up a nice big flag that he put up on the ice for our Burntside get together. It was real easy to see were the gathering was located. We were based out of Chunkytrout's permanent house and we put up one other shelter/wind break next to the house. We had Webers and a keg of beer. Everyone kind of spread out with their portables and then drifted back together later for eats and cocktails grin.gif. It was a blast.
If planned a while (month or two at least) in advance I believe it would be a big success. If it is next year I'll be there and can make up name tags for folks who want them. (My In-Laws have a stamp and trophy business and for the last party I made up 2" buttons with the FM logo along with peoples handles. I think I made up 16 of them for $1.50 each.)
I made some great new friends that day and some of us are getting together again in July for a Trip into Basswood Lake in the BWCA. I can hardly wait!!!!
The Burntside Bash will now be an anuall event and all FM'ers are welcome to join us next year grin.gif .
I'm always up for a bash smile.gif
Dr. Bob

Hey Guys: Lets not give up so easily. What about the summertime and open water fishing??? We all have Marine radios and the sun is up until 9PM or so, I've got a big yard with a fire ring and plenty of chairs too. I might be able to fill a cooler with Ice and Brew!! We can all talk in the afternoon on the radio and get together before dark....Lets keep the IDEA ALIVE....Kaz
[This message has been edited by Kaz (edited 03-17-2003).]

I'll be up there this weekend. Anyone else going to be around?
Mark

Kaz, which end of the lake are you on? I think I remember you saying something about the river. A get together this Summer sounds like a plan!

If only there was central island we could all pull up our boats too and have a shore lunch, and drinks...well, you are all more than welcome to come and visit me up in Whitefish Bay if any of you ever make your way up there. Nice Lake Trout up there....Curt?
------------------
Hemlock
"Throw'm back"

Old Guide: I'm across the street from Ballard's Resort on Burr Oak Rd. at Wheelers Point. I'm looking to early June as a good timing. I monitor channel 82 on open water so we could plan it anytime, shorelunch on Pine could work too....Kaz
------------------
KAZ

Kaz, we'll have to talk more on this, sounds good.
------------------
Old Guide Charters
Lake of the Woods
http://fishingminnesota.com/oldguidecharters/
Call Toll Free:1-800-952-(9484)

That shelter that the LOTW captains assoc. put up at Zippel bay state park would be a good place for a gathering, a roof, plenty of picnic tables, dockspace, ect. Folks coming from afar could camp right there or boat over from the Rainy resort area. If you guys get something going at Kaz's that would be a good central location too..... and I'd be able to stumble/crawl to my place from there!
Fisky

Fisky, maybe you, curt and I should plan a trip over there.
------------------
Old Guide Charters
Lake of the Woods
http://fishingminnesota.com/oldguidecharters/
Call Toll Free:1-800-952-(9484)

I don't think they have fixed much

More playas bite the dust. Probably at least 5 more by the sounds of the reports. Gotta be at least the many so I can be out too!

Have faith. You can see progress and ice depth from previous years on the Eagle Docks FB page. They said 16 inches a day or so ago. A few years back they had 16 inches only a week before official ice out. 60s to even 70s next weekend. It will be gone before opener. I'm planning on docks and lifts next weekend, but I am in a small protected bay that goes out pretty early.

We need optimism right now. The small bays haven't even opened up yet, which is typically two weeks before the big bays lose their ice. The forecast is in our favor though and I see that it's windy today, also a great sign.

Go to the DMV, see if there's a serial number on it. They should be able to title it

I moved my blind right into the middle of the field after I left this morning. It sticks out like a sore thumb on the landscape. A friend advised me to try this. We'll see if it works later. I hate the way it looks without blending in, but I have to try something else.

Im getting a ton of them also. So bad that I have to back out of the site and retry. Anyway to prevent them?

For a long time I've been getting pop-ups and error pages where I have to back page. I just thought it was the price of playing in the old sand lot! 🤔
