Orchard Lake

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the welcome all- and thanks a LOT for the parking tip (I've gotten a lot of trailer driving practice, driving through the full parking lot!).
I hope to get out to Orchard this weekend and see if I can annoy a few largemouth. Look for the black fisherman 1800 and a guy reading the operator manuals with a confused look!

LOL, I'll keep that in mind.

Just a reminder I'm kind a tall scruffy looking younger guy who has a beat up lil ol 14' red lund with fish stickers on the side.

Newer crew cab sonoma with a stuffed bass on the windsheild and a FM sticker in the rear window.

Bummmer man! That's not the news I was lookin for. I figured 4 lakes in 4 days would produce quite a few fish! I suppose it's back to the familiarity of the local lake then huh? Sorry to hear you didn't just pound them!

Orchard didn't go too well for me, but from the other people I talked to, it wasn't that good of a day for anyone. I only got two bass, one 14" and one dink. A few little sunfish, and a bully. Oh well...

I didn't see buzzsaw out there or anyone else. I might have, but then I'd never know wink.gif. Next time it may be a good idea to actually get a time to meet at the launch or something, heh.

Don't know if anyone atleast saw my truck with the FM sticker and fish on the dash atleast wink.gif

It's like the Oprah Winfrey show!! I only caught one walleye while the other two guys brought in 9 total. Not alot of walleyes for fishing Cass, winni and Leech for a half day... but we did "waste" a little time casting for muskies in sunny weather. Also, I was stubborn and didn't switch over to a spinner on my long line approach and thats what the other two were using and getting some action. blah, blah blah... always an excuse for a fisherman that's unsucessful right?!

It figures... you make it out there and I get derailed! I should get your phone number next time around. Did you cast for any muskies? There are some good ones in those waters... The DNR has been stocking the lake for Walleyes and Muskies for some time now. You can check out any lake by going to the MN DNR website, click on lake finder and type in the lake... check out stocking info etc....

Muskies are the one fish I DO NOT fish for. No offense, but to me it's wasting my time.

I'd rather just pitch northern sized variants of daredevils and mepps, I have about the same chance of a muskie banging that, I think and I'm going to pick off some Northerns along the way.

I tried trolling for Northerns W/O sucess. There are only a few lakes I do much for Northerns in the Metro for some odd reason, even if the lake is filled with them.

(Spring, White Bear, Tanners, and Linwood, and a few smaller Eagan ponds seem to be the only ones I can catch northerns out of on a regular basis)

So I generally fish Bass and Crappies on Orchard. I've done well in the past for both. Call me a heretic, but most of my Bass fishing is doen with live bait, whether it be on a slip bobber or on a live bait spinner rig. I have yet to pull a Northern from either Crystal or Orchard and I have tried for them numerous times.

I understand... If you want to get on alot of Northern's then I strongly suggest heading out to Lake Minnewashta.... near HWY 7 and 41 just past Excelsior.

Thats a ways out for me, but I'll keep it in mind. I generally fish lakes mostly in the East metro, as thats the area around me. I've caught a ton of Northerns crappie fishing on Spring, but have never really tried for them intentionally. I know of a number of the smaller lakes like Alimagent, Bush, and Mud lake (woodbury) that are chock full of northerns but sadly have horsepower restrictions of 10 hp or less....

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
