I'm glad to hear that Crawlerman! I mentioned a few times to Beef46 (Bryan) that I hope you didn't show up and try calling me.... I would have felt bad! I said there is no way he would believe me that I went in the drink and killed my cell phone... no way!
So I asked him to vouch for me if neccessary... I'm glad it wasn't. Thanks for the link Bryan.... Are any of us working today?

Nope. Not me. Just thinking about the next time I will be going fishing.

Oh and thinking about going to the KFC buffet for lunch.

Beef46,

Yeah I miss the three hour drive to LOW. It would be fun to share some NoDak stories sometime. Geez, there's even a Green Waver on the board . . . what's next, a Rough Rider (that can type)?

No Rough Rider's. I got issues with them.

Just kidding.

My cousin was a Green Waver. He is 2 years younger than me.

Jim Egland is his name. You probably don't know him since your 5 years older than him.

It would be nice to share some stories. Maybe we'll get out fishing some time.

I was out there with you guys last night (thur) too. My friend and I were in the Alumincaft. Fishing was slow for us. Marked what we thought was a nice school of crappies in about 24 ft of water. We tossed out the marker buoy and tried for about an hour, but not a single taker. Casted the shoreline and the reeds for a bit with no luck there either. The baitfish near the reeds were going crazy later towards dusk there. Jumping out of the water all over the place. I think we actually cut off/buzzed one of you guys in the G3 near the reeds. Neither one of us was paying much atention and didn't see you. Slow fishing, but still a good night on the lake. It would be nice if they had at least a few more parking places there. I know they want to limit the boat traffic on the lake, but when you can't even get on the lake on a thursday night, thats no good.

What's up jparrucci. Buzzsaw and I saw you over by the small reed bed early on and saw where you had the marker buoy. We went right past you. We stopped too in 30 FOW about a 100 yards SW of you when we saw a huge school. We determined that it was a huge school of small sunnies as they were coming to the surface on occasion. There were some larger fish there too but no takers.

The guy you buzzed would be jmusky. He was in the G3.

Exactly right on with what Beefy said!! I saw your red/white marker and joked to Beefy that we should go right on top of it... jokingly of course! There were huge schools of sunnies about 1 -3 inches long all over in the deeper water (30 ft) it looked good on the graph! Small world guys, we'll introduce ourselves next time... I was in the tan/black Crestliner with the 125 Mercury... I went by you guys slowly when you were north of the weedbeds. Have a good weekend... I'll be out there Sunday morning 6:00 - 11:00ish

It was realy nice meeting youguys last night you just dont see people hangin around the boat ramp like we were, kinda sad.I have talked to a few people about my blue bass and nobody seems to know why it was colored like that.It is nice to see that the muskies are good and healthy in the lake as well.I look foreward to fishing with you guys again maybe we could go together to free up a parking space.Any time you guys want to go give me a shout my E-mail add. is [email protected]

Someone waiting at the ramp may have seen me...I think we've been talking about Orchard too much...

I have fished Orchard about twice a week for three years, and on weekdays, never had a problem getting on. Well, I got there yesterday (thurs) about 5pm, and sure enough, full lot, and two boats waiting...might have been some of you guys.

I pulled out and went to Crystal, and noticed the guy behind me did the same thing...oh well, lessons learned, get there early!!

Tuesday night on Orchard if it works for you guys.... It looks like a nice evening... if we have problems with space at the ramp we can drive three blocks and park in my driveway. Let me know who's in.... maybe we should have parking signs made with our names. ( : P.S. Independence skunked me Saturday 'Ski fishing!

Mike,

I'll know this afternoon about tomorrow. My wife is on her way back with the boys from Chicago right now. I'll find out what's going on when I talk to her later. I'll let you know as soon as I know.

Yeah the parking this stinks. It's good because it keeps the pressure down but it's bad if you're the guy that gets there and there is no parking. I really don't want to have to go to Crystal in that case.

BTW, do you have a new cell phone yet?

Tuesday night should work fine. I'll charge the batt on the boat tonight and trailer it to work tommorow. Sounds like it should be a nice night. I just need to stop by GM real quick for bait, but should be at the launch about 5.

I yet have more last minute obligations to the Family today, gah; this is getting annoying...

Well someday you'll get the ellusive "Crawlerman" on Orchard. Maybe next week eh? I guess it's just hectic this week with my Brother up from TX, so his "plans" tend to dictate mine this week frown.gif.

Sorry about this,
Chris aka "Crawlerman"

I'm in. I'll be there with 3 boys. Ages 10,9 and 4.

Looks like no fishing for me just for them. Could be total chaos in the boat.

Fun times though.

Jeff (Jmusky) we didn't see you out there last night??? it seemed to be a little slower than last week except for the beauty that Bryan (Beef46) caught!!! Lets just say the untralight rod was getting a workout. I'll let him post the info... I'm planning on going out again tonight

Actually it was a medium action rod that looked like a ultralight with that fish on.

Just switched to a new set up, casted into the spot and right away a couple nips, reeled in slow about 3 inches and felt the pressure of the fish still there. All of a sudden, bobber disappears and a fight ensued with what appeared to be a decent bass.........until Buzzsaw and I saw the black and white flash as it came close to the surface.

Low and behold in the boat comes a 14" Crappie. What a pig. She really had some shoulders on her. My biggest Crappie to date. Lot of fun.

But that wasn't the most fun part of the nite. The most fun part was watching my 4 year old son get man-handled by a 1 1/2 to 2 lb bass using a Tazmanian Devil Disney rod with 4lb test. He could hardly turn the reel. It was an epic battle that I wished I had the video camera for. He did a great job. I was a very proud father. He got kind of upset at me when a little bit later after pictures we put him back in the water. As he is petting the bass and proclaiming, "But Daddy, I love my fish". But after explanation of why, he understood.

Great nite. Thanks again Mike for the use of your facilities. I really appreciate it.

See ya next time.

PS. If I can ever figure out the picture thing, I will post one.

I met a buddy out there over lunch today for an hour and couldn't find our honey hole!! I was very disappointed by how much I rely on the GPS!! and yes the boat ramp was full and was at 9:30 this morning.....

I pretty much just fish the visable structure and drop off edges near by them. Orchard has enough cover (and is small enough) that you don't NEED a GPS really...

Also I might hit it tonight looks like as I'm in exile from the home. I usually get there right around the "switch" before the other work people tend to get there. But yeah, it is getting more popular now...

But I have an extra hour of light from a month ago, so I suppose I can sit on fumes and wait. Allready had to do that a couple of times on weekday nights on prior this year....

oh Crawlerman.... if you had the honeyhole that Beef46 and I located.... your right you can find it without the GPS.... it just takes a while longer to get right on this 20 x 20 ft area..... If you make it out tonite call me and we'll hook up.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
