Shore fishing for Northerns

Recommended Posts

Spudperson56

My son attends a year-round school. For a summer project he is researching Northerns. He would like to catch a mount one himself. I've ice-fished Battlecreek (Mud) and done well. However, being boatless, I have tqo questions:
#1. Any ideas for shorefishing east metro for northerns and
#2. Any ideas where he can learn some basics about Taxidermy?
Thanks

Ive done pretty well fishing the battle creek pier in the past for northerns. Nothing real big but the action is good.

Square lake by stillwater can put out some real nice northerns.

What size does he want to mount? a real trophy or just a decent 5lb fish?

Thank you. I shall have him give the dock a try. He is willing to mount anything, knowing him I doubt that he would want anything too big. The largest fish he has ever landed was an 18 inch Rainbow in Idaho. He is also strictly a catch and release person. This would be the first fish he has kept in ages. I assume (a dangerous thing) that a simple lure would work or should I pick him up some live minnows?

If he's going to be fishing from a pier I would pick up some medium or large suckers and some big slip bobber rigs. If you're not going to be moving around and fishing a lot its best to wait them out. But pier fishing for pike can be very good action if they are biting.

I was out there before opener fishing for panfish with flu-flus and caught some. Most were small biggest was 25in. Too bad the panfish weren't hitting as well. I would get some minnows and if you want to go the cheap route, get some fatheads. I don't think it would matter much. Good Luck.

I've caught all my Northerns this year on twister tails and in-line spinners. Haven't used live bait yet. If you're looking to just catch one, I wouldn't worry about live bait. But if you want a larger fish, I'd definitely try suckers under a bobber.

No clue where in the east metro. Maybe White Bear Lake?

Del, I have never bothered to skin or scale them as I do not eat the skin or fins. Cliff

Hope you at least get some rain up there this spring Kelly.  We were pretty dry until the past two months.

It says 3 amp fuse in the manual. I'm going to run it to the motor battery. I'll post how it works. Thanks skunked again!

I'm curious about the walleye wings... do you skin or scale them?   Or is it not a problem?

We miss the leadership of Ricky Rubio ... Teague is a very bad defender and does not see the floor.  Rubio had his best shooting percentage season ever and career points scored of his career.  Wish we could re-do that trade.   Don't get me going .... among players that play the most minutes ... we are now the 7th oldest team in NBA???   2 year window to win ... we should have kept our talent and let the cake bake! We still have 24" of ice on the bay & we're only 6-8 miles from where they set the nets. Doubt they'll be starting anytime soon over there.
