Well just to keep eaters slabs and Mules running with some pics ...here's some from today.

A full day in deed. Larby and his bud were out.Moosehead and Chopperman were there too.

Chopp & Moose aka swizz cheese left a bit too early.Ya ,it was a tough day worked hard for the fish we caught.

I gunned holes from 8-3 never sitting down, always took a knee when I seen fish.

Larby's bud...I forget his name...caught some nice slabs today using meat....shhhhhh.

Those slabs would make a run from time to time but when they would not move it was time to move on although a few fish got dipped into many times then they would suprize you and chase your jig down and hit it.

Moosehead got into a few before he had to leave.

Here's a nice slab he caught.

I really hate to say this ....not...I worked that same hole today and snagged a 12 & 14 out of it DOH!

Chopperman clipped a few smaller ones but then this guy came rolling along for him.

Nice fish Chopperman.

Met a few new guys today on the ice. Taking time to show others what works and making friends is pretty cool.

Look at this bull that James caught.

Here's a vid with James and a snot rocket.

I left my Dad in the house where he could just sit and fish.

The 1st place I set him up did not net any catches so I moved him.

The second part of the day he stayed pretty busy from his story on the way home.

Here he is as I roll the house over before we left.

Can't do that....that would be advertising. You got google get creative.

Besides it's not so much about color ,but more about profile.

I'm a big user of horizontal presentations.

On the lake I'm catching these fish chart.yellow and blue or chart. and any color heck even straight black has ruled the day.

the other thing that we need to look at is that I'm working a lift ...mostly 3-5 feet away from the fish trying to trigger a strike.

I'll put my offering right in the fish's face for about 3-5 seconds, then I'll start to reel away.A crank at a time and pause about 10 seconds to see if it will break.

Ultimately I'm trying to work them as high as they will go on that day which that will change from day to day sometimes even during that day it could change.

The ceiling is what I'm reffering too.

Usually on the 1st couple of fish I can determine what the ceiling is.

Sure I've had fish hit shy of it or even on the down fall, but 90% or better come from lifting to the ceiling.

Say a slab comes in at 24 just off of the bottom. So I go down to it to grab it's attention.

Then pull away a foot. It will come up and cover me,but won't hit so after 4-6 seconds I'll lift another foot.Again it will come up and cover without hitting so I'll pause for that 4-6 seconds then lift again. This time it comes to cover and strike.

When I'm lifting a fish and I see a few stop at the same place....that's the ceiling so I'll try to run a fish right to it.

I also leave a little room so that just as the slab get's to my offering I'll lift an inch or two. Those slabs fly right up ....thinking their dinner is getting away and strikes.

Part of this is why I try to get seperation.I want that slab to think it's meal is getting away.

Too close and they just gawk.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, i have every jig in the world i will just

narrow it down from there, sounds like you use the standards for teasing the fish to bit,

i have found that some times when you drop it on the bottom they can not resist.

Thanks

Rob

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
