Is there a sunfish population on Lake of the Woods? What about crappies?

Posted

There are good populations of crappie, most of which are in Canadian waters. The Tug Channel and Sabaskong bay are two areas that are known for them.
I don't know about sunfish, however.

I have yet to see a sunfish in Low.
Lots of crappies. School house point area, also Eagle rock bay in the spring.
Large mouth bass (yes largemouth) is a fish most people don't know exist in Low. The Angle inlet is full of them, Portage bay has a good population, and boggy bay in the north end of sabaskosing has a large population.

Widetrack: Does the guy who is the CEO of Merle Norman Cosmetics still have that big lodge on the north end of Portage Bay?? I was in that business for a long time, and met him several years ago in California. Quite a lay out with the Chopper pad and all. I fished a lot out if Sandy's when Deloris and Les had the place. Also hung around Oak and Flag then too, may of met you before as you said you Guided up there. Believe it or not, one of my bookeepers has roots from the Angle, Engdahl family....Kaz

Gissert and Widetrack,
How late in the spring are the crappies biting around tug and school house. We go up in June and drive past them all the time, fishing for northerns and muskies, and I always wondered about that.

Kaz:
Yes he still has the place in portage, and yes it is quite the pad. Once in a while he has his models up there, and they are all out in bikinis on the swim raft... of course a person needs to take a couple of trolling passes...
I used to guide for Flag island in the early 80's. I'd hate to try make a living being a guide, but it was a great job at the time...

Gman:
I've only fished crappies in the late fall around school house, they are there in bunches then.
In the spring I've had good sucess in eagle rock bay, and christmans bay. The last two bays in the NW end of Falcon island.

Widetrack: TNX for the update.. Well we may of crossed paths then, I spent many of hours in the Angle area back in the 80's. I Musky fished from Monument up to Big Narrows and everything in between. Now I have a place at Wheelers, but fish Garden and north. Going to have to stay across the big water and sleep up there some night and hit the places around Oak, Flag, and Youngs. I understand Deloris Sandy still cooks her famous rolls over at the resturant at Youngs bay. Keep in touch and we can have a brew someday next open water season....Richard Kaitz aka Kaz

Gman -
I pretty much stick to Sabaskong bay in March for the crappies. I know they can be caught there in the fall as well.
I have never fished for them in the open water season.

Kaz:
Yes Deloris is a cook at Jerrys at the angle.
I've been known to hang out at Jerrys once in a while...
My Fish camp is just down the road from Jerrys right next to DS boat storage, stop in and say hi sometime!

I don't think they have fixed much

More playas bite the dust. Probably at least 5 more by the sounds of the reports. Gotta be at least the many so I can be out too!

Have faith. You can see progress and ice depth from previous years on the Eagle Docks FB page. They said 16 inches a day or so ago. A few years back they had 16 inches only a week before official ice out. 60s to even 70s next weekend. It will be gone before opener. I'm planning on docks and lifts next weekend, but I am in a small protected bay that goes out pretty early.

We need optimism right now. The small bays haven't even opened up yet, which is typically two weeks before the big bays lose their ice. The forecast is in our favor though and I see that it's windy today, also a great sign.

Go to the DMV, see if there's a serial number on it. They should be able to title it

I moved my blind right into the middle of the field after I left this morning. It sticks out like a sore thumb on the landscape. A friend advised me to try this. We'll see if it works later. I hate the way it looks without blending in, but I have to try something else.

For a long time I've been getting pop-ups and error pages where I have to back page. I just thought it was the price of playing in the old sand lot! 🤔
