7th Annual Burntside Bash w/map

Recommended Posts

Well, if today's 11-19 inches of snow comes true, we're going to have some tough ice conditions out on Bside, with it being fully frozen for only about a week. Thin ice and that much snow will spell slush right from the get-go and last a long time.

Stevo,

About 5 inches in front of the Van Vac landing at 4pm, Saturday afternoon and a bit of slush by parts of the shore already. frown

If we get this predicted stuff we'll have another re-run of last year. cry

Except it'll be worse. Only the sheltered bays on Bside were frozen when we got those two early dumps of snow last year. This time the whole darn lake is frozen over, so it could be a huge slushy mess all over the lake for a good long while.

Oh well, that's mother nature. gringrin

We have almost a foot and it's still coming.

Thanks for the update on the snow Steve. I know this isn't related to the B-Side Bash, but Jr. came home for the weekend and is still here awaiting better weather to get back up there.

Smart move for Jr. to stay home a bit longer. I expect could come back sometime tomorrow. But of course Hwy. 169 between Tower and Ely will still be a bad road (always is in winter), and it's supposed to be pretty darn cold the next several days.

Maybe, if we're lucky, the new ice on Bside buckling from all this snow will cause all the snow to turn to slush from top to bottom and the cold snap will freeze it up tight. Well, a guy's gotta hope, right? gringrin

Hopefully those cold temps get Bside nice and iced over and does away with any of that slush stuff...thats the last thing I want to see anywhere this year after dealing with all of it last year...fingers crossed

Interesting. Last year I didn't have any problems with slush on Bside. It was pretty much limited to the sheltered bays (which got two heavy dumps of snow after they froze but before the main lake froze over), and I don't fish the sheltered bays. I drove to all the places I normally fish all over the lake in my Toyota 4Runner as soon as the ice was thick enough. We were driving on the ice by the Burntside Bash or shortly after and using wheelers and snowmobiles from opener up to that point.

There was a little slush here and there out in the open portions of the lake (there's always some), but it didn't cause us any trouble.

STEVO,

The entire lake was covered when we got the 2nd early dump last year, not just the bays.

The lake was partially open when we got the first one, then the slush created by the snow froze, for what it was worth.

I was reffering more to the Duluth area STF sorry. Sadly I never made it out to Bside last year but with gas this cheap I have no excuses this year!

Thanks, G.O. However it happened, I had no slush issues on Bside last winter. Sorry, grits, didn't know you were talking Duluth. smile

I am looking for another good laker trip. This will be my third bash and looking to do battle with them lakers again.

Like frank said earlier try to find a sled or wheeler for this event you do need one. It is hard to hall people around but it has been done before so plan a head.

Most of us that now the lake have been able to find trout every trip and we do help every one on location and what worked for us. But a Good GPS is very help full and we do go out in groups so that can help you out a lot if you are knew to the lake. in the am it is good to hook up with some guy's and go with them and hope the trout are where you are fishing. But the friend ship and fishing is the Bash. The trout are second but fun when you get one or two.

Wow, 'nuff said. How's a guy gonna turn down such an eloquent invitation. I guess I gotta go now. Just one worry though, last year there were rumors of a spy from lake state fishing. Scary stuff- any truth to that?

I heard the smae. Dont worry though if they were from Lakestate they wont remember anything this year. grin

Seriously though I dont care who comes up there and fishes with us. Everyones welcome even if they do post on other sites.

Exactly. The Bash has always been about welcoming people (even Porter), not excluding them. gringrin

Yup, we drove all over last year. I am thinking we got spoiled. There were even people driving up the North Arm. On my last few trips it seemed like there was maybe six inches of snow and about three feet of ice. It was a very good year for fishermen who wanted to drive full-sized vehicles out there.

I guess this year will be a good one for those who drive wheelers and sleds.

Burntside ice conditions currently very dangerous.

I have another post on them, check it out.

I think this year will be snowmobile only. Way things are going even if there is good ice there will be to much snow.

We went through the very same thing last year on B-Side and on area lakes. Thin ice and deep snows made for some very bad slush. That changed when the snow settled enough and the cold temps froze it all up.

This year is different in that its limited to the larger deep lakes with thin ice and slush. We'll need that snow to settle, best way for that to happen is a couple warm days. Then cold temps to freeze and we'll be on good to go.

At 4 PM last evening, I checked the ice on an area that was one of the 1st places to freeze (3 weeks ago, before the big snow).

About 10 inches of snow, 2-3 inches of slush, and only 8 inches of ice including the apparent double layer.

This measurement was taken 30 feet from shore, on the west end of Burntside.

Also, I thought I could see large dips in the snow that appeared to indicate air holes.

There are snowbilers riding on the lake, but have no idea what danger they are in. confused

So...what happened with this last weekend warm up that we had? Did it melt away that snow so that it can get some nice ICE up there??????

It wasn't warm enough long enough to get much of any outright snow melt on the lakes. However, it loosened things up a bit and allowed the snow to compact.

We'll just have to see how things progress. I haven't been out to test Bside ice at all. When I do, I'll ignore the shallow bays and will focus on the Van Vac access area and the wide open spaces, since most laker takers prefer to fish main lake structure.

Plenty of time for things to tighten up. Nearly three weeks to go before opener.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
