Have guys been venturing out to the middle of the lake at all? I did pretty well last winter and wouldn't mind the walk out if it's safe.

Open water last weekend....well doesn't seem to bother anyone. There were SEVERAL vehicles on Buffalo this morning out from the south end. Not the ones parked on shore either. 35 degrees today and tomorrow. Don't be surprised if you here sirens in that area this weekend.

Ice has gotten weak with this rain - People are scrambling to get their permanents off the lake and one truck went through on the North landing.

drove by yesterday and saw a full size dodge ram out about 1/4 mile from the north access. We watched it drive back to the ramp. I couldn't believe it!! but it made it. I thought it was going in for sure.

I have never seen people as bold as they are this year. All it takes is one guy and you can literally watch a chain reaction. Must have been several hundred people out there yesterday whats the word....are the bites picking up?

What do they expect pilinig up their vehicles on 11" of ice? Yesterday you could see water under almost every vehicle. It happens every year. A few years ago people were parking on the ice too early and tons of vehicles fell in. It's common sense people!

That access is pretty roughed up now. We helped a buddy move his perm from the courthouse out towards the middle of the lake during the storm but it paid off. The crappies were snapping and I caught my first whitey... a 12"er. On the way out I saw a swan running on the ice... not sure if the freezing rain did a number on its wings or what. It was pretty brutal out there. A solid 11" of ice.

  • 2 weeks later...

I pulled mine out last Monday with a f150. Went off of the south landing into the second group to the north west. there was 16 inches.

Sounds like fair ice for a light pick-up huh? I want to get out of the South access, to my all-alone spot. Haven't been to the lake for about 2 weeks, so don't know. Good luck to all you. Happy New Year!

Had a guy tow one by me last night with a ¾ ton Crew cab. The Ice was doing a lot of barking, bounced the water in the holes but he stayed on top. Not exactly sure of the ice depth but I would guess it’s around 16”

measured around 16 inches of nice ice near the 30 foot hole last night with another inch on top of that consisting of frozen slush. Vehicles up the wazoo on the lake.

I'm so sorry, I shouldn't laugh, but in all seriousness, have you seen how many people have been calling Buffalo their destination? There are precious few all-alone spots anymore, and I fish "those spots". I counted 500-600 houses out there on Saturday... if your all alone, trust me, with this much traffic and pressure out there right now, you won't be for long! There's people drilling holes and setting up 15 feet from vacant perms sitting all alone far from the crowds, and other various pains. Its time to plan a vacation from fishing buffalo lake!

Com'on guys there are lots of untapped areas. Right? crazy I asked another guy why Maple doesn't get fish houses like Buffalo?

Because Buffalo comes before Maple in the alphabet, and on Hwy 55 coming from the cities. wink It also didn't have GPS coordinates broadcast on popular talk shows.

While I live a mile from Buffalo, I have yet to venture out into that zoo. I have been doing just fine on other lakes in the area. I'll leave Buffalo to the crowds.

Yep...me too. Its a zoo out there. For a lake thats not very large she gets pounded hard. To be honest I am shocked you can still pull out a 10" crappie. Not for long though. Its Buffalo's filthy drane pool with rotting dead fish all over the shoreline in the summer and over fished in the winter.

it is to bad the city uses buffalo lake as it's drain hole. If there were holding ponds the lake would be a lot better. Most dead fish you find in summer are from fisherman, that don't know how to handle fish for release. If the city got behind the improvement of the lake, they could produce more income for the city.

We hit Buffalo last weekend, had to be at least 100 trucks on the lake. The landing is pretty rough on the North Side. Had 16" of ice under us but the water was sloshing out on every vehicle moving through. Caught two keeper crappies right at dark.

I agree jim, for a city that uses Buffalo Lake as its main attraction they could do ALOT more to clean it up and respect it. I was walking with my kids along the main sidewalk in front of the boat rentals this summer and a woman passed by and asked who was in charge of cleaning up the shoreline while she was covering her mouth with her hands. There was hudreds of dead rotting fish all along the shoreline as far as you could see. Many were in buckets that were half full. She said she had moved here from out of town and was going to call the city. It was rather embarassing.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
