New home made gear

Muthagoose

Recommended Posts

Here is a link to a video of a spreader I made. Please ignore the stoopid narrative - it was meant for my bro. That being said, I think these could make picking up and putting out dekes much easier.

Mutha suggested that I put up some pix of some home made lures but I don't want to hijack a hunting thread. Maybe I will...

Well I finally got time to go over to the shed and take a few pics of the test decoys..The picture has been rotated so if the dgreen droppers look off thats why

They did pretty well considering I toss them around on the shore and in the boat...

I might have to have a garrage sale this spring.Might be time to sell a couple boats and decoys.

Those babies are GORGEOUS Mutha! Still thinking I'm going to need to invest in your decoys for the upcoming fall. Those puppies would be flatout unfair to the poor ducks here in Nodak!!!

Well Tyler if all goes as planned Ill be in ND a couple trips and we can give the new ones a propper field testing..

Putting the burlap on 60 floater and 20 field mallards in the next couple weeks.

Then its diver time....

Hooking up with a couple layout gunners building spreads for em..

Its finally going to happen after 46 years of taxidermy Im going to hang up the scalpel...Going to concentrait on just decoys. The school gig provides enough taxidermy related work to keep me tuned if I ever decide to go back into it.....

Besides this late in life ya dont want to get TO busy,,, it gets in the way of hunting..

Can't say I blame you. Tough to spread yourself that thin when you've got talents all over the place.

Want to do one last crappie before you call it quits? It's in my freezer as I type... wink

Ill have to pass Tyler.

Actually returned a bit of work already and may return more.

Possibly heading to Idaho to help Don Mintz paint for a couple months this summer all depends on if I can hire someone to help with burlapping to get ahead. Thats ""If"" I can find the right person ..

Dons been my mentor and freind so its one of my bucket list things to work with the MASTER of foam decoys..

Probably not bear hunt'n this fall, just to many bases to touch with decoys and gunning. Also getting a few requests for sea ducks and pintails so Ive got to get those heads carved and the molds done in my off time..

Fish are the simplest to do atleast for me, I'd rather do birds tho ..

$10 the average rate for a side mount..Tyler being in ND there ya go..

$10 an inch isn't bad at all. Guys around here want upwards of $15. Not saying the work isn't worth it, but $200 for a 14-inch crappie seems steep. Pretty sure I got my 21-inch walleye (no 31-incher but hey, give me a break, I was 13 years old) done for $150 from a guy in Fergus Falls, but that was 15 years ago.

Too bad your guy is in Minot. That's a long way for me to go.

I was going to drop it off at Sportsmans Taxidermy in EGF over the weekend, but Benson wasn't at the Delta meeting like normal Friday night and I had to bug out early the next morning.

Oh well...

Its easy to ship, i ship my eyeball speedee del. over night no prob. With a crappie id just wrap it in News paper really good the pastic bag, duck tape it an put on a shipping lable , Igaruntee it be frozen when it get there, Thing is if it thaws a little its no biggie either, the skin is is all painted anyway. He's tolfd me stories of how some ship fish to him, I found out ya deffinately dont have to keep them 100 % frozen. Let me know if youd ever consider. Later baor

I just finished up burlap'n 4dz mallard floaters and now to start on the 3dz full body mallards woodies and Geye's

I have a couple people I want to introduce into waterfowling this next fall so I bought a couple FA Subs this winter and now looking into changing them into more of a "folding" blind like the P landers I have.

Think'n if I add/alter the main frames and add the slider locks it would make packing them easier..

Anyone got a SUB and do you break down the main frame?

So it's been a while, MG; any updates on the intern or your increased production? Any prototypes that need *ahem* long-term testing in North Dakota??? I've been going through Muthagoose decoy withdrawals for a while now and I need a fix!!! Hook a brother up grin

Schools FINALY done..

Pat the intern helped all day monday burlap'n hoddies and buffs.

The redheads and mallards are tailed and keeled.I still have 40-50 ringer's and woodies to carve..

After getting the new full body DVD from my mentor Don I tore the heads off most of my full body wooducks. They just were NOT good enough...

Always tell my taxidermy student to NEVER say 3 words and you do fine..

"Thats Good Enough'

So with that I have to employ the same and redo some....

Ill get a pic of in progress up after this week..

Hard to find good help, have to help the wife with delivering flowers the rest of the week.. I wear TO MANY HATS.

Sure glad I stopped taking in critters and fish taxidermy work otherwise ther wouldnt be time for my new hobby custom painting crankbaits and casting leadjigs....

Custom painting...but that will eat into valuable decoy creation time!!!

I'm a bit sad you decided to quit the animal stuffing business, but if you ever get a hankering to try one more, I still have that crappie sitting in my freezer just begging to be made whole again... grin

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
