lets see what tyler says he be the ND connection...

So far, in my neck of the woods, birds have been scattered. Not much of a "migration" going on yet. If you're up for a locked in date, I'd start zeroing in on the second to last weekend of October through the first weekend in November. Granted, weather will play a large factor, but that's typically when we begin to see fresh, fat green beans.

I'll keep you posted wink

Mutha- I have a few taxidermy questions to ask you. Can you send me a PM or give me a way to contact you.

I have a commercially tanned bear hide from the 2011 season that I picked up in August. I would like to finish the rug myself.

I saw in Vandykes catalog the rug forms. Ear Cups and so forth. My skull measured 19 1/4" . I am looking for sizing recommendations for forms and eyes as well as suggested tools for doing the work.

Thank you

Steve

Mutha, tried sending you a PM but your mailbox is full.

On that note, if you're planning to come up, I'd do it soon. Birds are on the move and are staging in areas. My schedule is really tight for the next few weeks, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to get out with you if you come. That said, I could point you in the right direction. Send me a PM if you want to talk further. You can fill in Gordie later ... if you feel like bringing him grin

Mutha, please shoot me a PM. Have a few ?'s for you. I just picked up some rare Herter's coot dekes, and may need some heads painted or built. My son and I are going to have a burlap day at the house next summer... painting in detail is NOT our strong suit... wink

Muthagoose, I recently viewed this topic and I've been inspired! You do some great work. I've thought about making decoys before and after seeing what you have done I'm going for it. I've done some searching on the web and found lots of helpful info. I like making my own stuff and getting gratification out of using it. I've made plastic fishing lures for ice fishing and open water and when I catch fish with them it's a great feeling. Dropping ducks or geese over decoys I made would be awesome. I was going to pm you but as I thought it was full. I'm sure people ask you a lot of ??'s. I would greatly appreciate it if you could explain to me how you make molds for your heads.? Or point me in the right direction. Pm me if you could or post here.

Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the good..great..phenomenal work!

Here's a "semi-custom" I made this off season... It was an old Herters body and a head made by a custom decoy maker I know... Turned out alright!

Thanks. Not an Autumn Wings... Actually a super dense polyurethane foam head from Bigger Water Decoys out of Pensylvania. Getting some canvasback heads from them too for Herters 72 bodies I painted. Really impressed by the quality of their heads.

May mold my own heads next offseason. Got through 30 old Herters this winter/spring.

yup I see it now.. Didn't they buy up Toledo?

I'm all for synthetics lightweight, strong and no rot...

Mold your own, its not only easy to do but rewarding....

They did buy Toledo, I'm pretty sure. Here's a couple more from the winter... Goldeneyes are Bigger Water Decoys I got as raw bodies/heads and burlapped. Herters were all dinged up, so I burlapped and painted. Definitely getting into the hobby. Need an airbrush next go round.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
