I wouldnt have speared the 36" fish, thats just to big to spear in my book but seeing as how he speared it in a different house I figured I could atleast appreciate it. There was a 46 or 47" fish speared by me this year that was rumoured to be 27 pounds if I remember correctly and I was saddened to hear that. 30" is the biggest I would harvest, Id rather watch a hog swim through the hole then kill it.

I agree, bearbait. I know it's everyone's right to spear a pike of any size, but it hurts ALL spearers when the big mommas are taken out of the system. I won't spear anything bigger than about a 4-5 pounder. The big ones I just watch (or, if I'm lucky, catch on video.

I like to watch the videos on you tube and hate to see it when guys spear those 40" plus fish then it shows them fillet it. I could see taking ONE fish like that for the wall but not to eat. Problem is that out here in stearns county lots of my friends dont have the best ethics when it comes to spearing which sucks but not much you can do.

No carp, I had a 16" decoy minnow and the bullhead I speared was probably 8 or 9 inches

There is allot you can do.

It first starts with leading by example, and it sounds like that is exactly what you are doing.

Keep on promoting look and release and catch and release.

We should all respect the big girls when it comes to all methods of harvest. (hook or darkhouse spear) Sportsmen’s attitudes are changing but it requires all of us to make it work.

Selectively harvesting the smaller northern pike from the system is the key to a balanced fishery, and the future of all fishing.

Take a trophy if you "need" to, but if you are looking for something to eat, let the big ones swim, enjoy them swimming under your feet year after year. The goosebumps of just seeing one of these big fish are what many are out there for. But by all means enjoy the smaller less contaminated fish when it comes time to enjoy a meal of fresh Minnesota Northern Pike.

Darkhouse spearing is about so much more than just stabbing a pike!!

Yeah it is an old sleeper off a kenworth and I enjoy it, It has that nice leather interior, made completly out of aluminum and fiberglass so in reality it should last forever, its insulated really well and doesn't take much to heat it and it has a nice 4'x2' hole. Only down side is that it is kind of a pain to move around. Its a lot heavier then I thought it would be, The skis are lined with a special super slide plastic out of an end dump but any snow and it doesnt slide so easy, I have plans to make a drop down frame for it since I need a truck or a 4 wheeler to move it anyways

Betterlabs - You won't go wrong with a Fabec spear. I bought one last fall and I love it. He made me a 9 tiner and probably as wide as your 7 tine. Stainless shaft with copper colored knurling on the end. Throws straight as an arrow. Think I paid around $180 or so.

They're expensive but if you're going to get into spearing it will last forever.
