Man that's a hog of a northern. I missed a 10-12# today fishing through the spear hole. awesome seeing them take a sucker minnow.

I got my PB today shattering my old record of 8 lbs. I wasn't even planning on going to day but decided to go anyways. She came in at about 10:30 to a bear creek perch decoy. I Was really lucky to because my heater just ran out of propane at the same time it came in. I would have been heading home in another 10 minutes or so. I have a video of the action to but I don't know if it would be ok to put it on here.

39" 17 lbs.

Here is the link to the video its not the greatest I sorta ruined it by getting in the way, but its still cool to have the video to go back and revisit that moment when ever I want.

Nicely done!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if it would have helped, but I always try to pull the spear up in front of me and push the fish and spear against the wall in front. Might have bent the spear on that one, though!!!

I prefer to just grab the fish, big or small, as soon as it comes to the surface. This fish didn't thrash around or anything once I grabbed it. It stayed absolutely still until I got it outside and off the spear. If the hit was farther back I think pinning it up against the wall would be the best bet.

TDH, That is the most awesome spearing video I have ever seen! My heart was beating out of my chest when that monster was swimming around the hole with the spear, I can't imagine how you were fealing! I take some video of fish coming in with my cell phone but I wouldn't be able to get a big one on video that way. Congrats on an absolute pig and a great lifetime memory with the video.

Yeah I'm still around, lol. I'm working in a power plant now so I got work all year long, unfortunatelly it cuts into my spearing time. I like the money, but I kinda miss having my winters off.

As far as ice thickness goes it's about 24 inches in the lakes around here. So far we have had an awesome winter for outdoors activities. It's been staying around mid 20's during the day with lots of sunshine and getting down to single digits at night. No compaints from up here!!

And eat!  Turkey, noodle, wild rice!   Darn good for first run ever! 😋

I have not eaten one, they are protected generally here in the states and Canada although there have been special seasons for population control but I don't think it was harvested for meat. I've hunted in countries where they are not protected and was with someone who shot one, I didn't eat it but it just stunk after I picked it up.

Do you guys eat cormorant?  Even Indians call them fisheaters, and they don't eat fisheaters! 🤮

Happy Thanksgiving to you all as well. We had ours yesterday because our RN daughter in law had to work today.  So I'm trying my hand first time ever at turkey stock for soup later! 😋

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.   The ice is coming.  Eager to get out. Dug out my old strikemaster Thursday and got it ready. Smokes like  a chimney at times, but can't justify buying a new one when the old still works good.

They definitely are stinky birds, the cormorant that is. The Sandhills don't really smell. When you clean them it smells more like venison than waterfowl. We figured he wouldn't pick it up since they must smell similar to chickens and my buddy has trained the Chesapeake to not go after their chickens at home

Many years ago it was legal to shoot cormorants.  My Grandfather at the time also had a chesapeake bay retriever and he said that dog would retrieve anything in the worst conditions.   One time he told me he shot a cormorant.  The dog swam out out there and refused to pick it up.  Apparently because they are so nasty, stinky, and greasy.   He said its the only bird that dog would not retrieve in 11 years.
