I gotta give ya a pat on the back for letting those fish go. It looks like ya got a great spot and a great lake, and it's gonna stay that way if you keep letting those big gals grow. Sometimes it's just as fun to watch 'em!

The radio station in Fargo has a catch of the week picture contest and I think the prizes are gift cards from the Sportsman's Warehouse. Either send your pixs to [email protected] or go to the Joel Heitkamp page on kfgo.com and find the link. They are picking a winner for this week and so far no pictures as of yet. There are a few fish pictures that could win.

the story on the monster is

my buddy told me he had seen a few fish on lake washington and i hadnt seen anything in the spot i was at so i moved over there new years day in the afternoon and speared for about an hour, didnt see any pike. got out the next day about 8 30. saw a few bass and sunnies right away before i had my hole cleaned out (thats a sign of a good day to me) about 9 15 that monster slid his nose into the hole looked at my sucker minnow, wasnt to intirested, moved on to my wood decoy and thats the end of the story for the fish. i couldnt have made a better shot, split the spine with two tines and pinched him with two tines. now i knew he was big but i was thinking more like 18 or 19 pounds, so i let him sit on the bottom with the spear in him for a fue miniutes untill there wasnt much movement. of corse my decoy line was tangled in my spear, but what else would you expect.

i pulled him upto the serface of the water, pushed him out the door, and kicked him off, not thinking to do it gentally so i wouldnt tear the skin up. so now i have this fish on the ice with 2 big holes in him thrashing around. i measured him 43 inches, called my dad, and said (i think i just speared my wall mounter) he replied (ya right) and i said (its 43 inches)but then i thought to myself maybe i read the tape wrong, maybe its 33 inches so i double checked, yep 43 inches and i think thats the point i s*** myself jk. i called my buddy that speared a 18 pounder the year before and asked him how big mine was. he said 20 plus.

now what do you do with a 43 inch pike that you think you might want to mount, where do you put it..............shotgun in the pickup of course.

got to dads, took pictures, went to the bait shop to weigh him a ounces shy of 23, now what taxadirmist do i go to, i have never had a fish mounted, halled it to the taxadirist, went back home

so thats the end of the story

then what do you do quit spearing because you might never get a trophy like that again..............NO i went back out that afternoon, and whenever i have a chance since.

sorry i dont know how to post pictures otherwise i would put some with this post. just look back on elwood's earlier post.

Dang carp! I was able to bend the tine back into position. Stuck the carp with the center three tines, and the one tine flexed out with the body of the carp.

Thanks for the pix and the vid. You should make the hole bigger so when the big grin one comes in you can get it out of the wink hole. When will you have the next pixs and vid ready to post?

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
