Your first ex-Twins to be for 2008

Lefthanders Dennys Reyes and Eddie Guardado and infielder Nick Punto were among 65 players who filed for free agency on Thursday, the first day players could do so.

Punto, who batted .284 with two homers, 28 RBI and 15 stolen bases this season, has expressed strong interest in re-signing with the Twins. The club, however, might look to upgrade at shortstop while leaving Alexi Casilla at second base. It's unclear if Punto would accept a utility role.

Reyes, 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA, might not return as he could fetch up to $4 million a year as a free agent. The Twins liked what they saw from rookie Jose Mijares during a late-season stint and might decide to use him and Craig Breslow as left-handed specialists.

Guardado, acquired from Texas on Aug. 28, isn't expected to re-sign with the club.

Players can file for free agency for 15 days following the end of the World Series.

Of the 3 it would be nice if they could keep Punto. The others wont hurt to see go. Eddy was washed up, and Reyes was a specialty guy only comming in to see a few hitters at a time.

If they split, we get more draft picks, so bye guys.

Punto will re-sign with the Twins. He likes it here. As far as his role, it seems like every year they want to use him as a utility player, but every year he ends up playing most of the time, due to players getting hurt. IMO

did u read the SI article about the Twins trading liriano to texas for 4 guys including Saltalamaccia and Blalock

I would like to keep Punto. He's quite valuable to our team IMO. We can pretty much throw him anywhere in the field and can expect gold glove type defense, while he holds his own at the plate. This last year really showed us what Punto means to us.

Blalock is done and Salty is a better 1-sacker than catcher. The twins are good at 2 and 3. It wouldn't surprise me if the twins moved L during spring training.

LOL Blalock is 27. That guy has still got a solid bat.

You are right about Salty though. He has not panned out like many thought he would.

Just think, last pre-season the Phillies were shopping Pat the Bat Burrell heavy. After watching the post season games he played in, I wish we could have worked something out

I bet he would have been fantastic at the Dome too. Finally this year he came around in Philly. I didn't think he would with all that pressure from those nasty fans.

They may as well re-sign those three, the way the twins are they will just replace them with 3 other players that perform the exact same. By re-signing them, then they don't have to pay extra $ for different names being put on a jersey

the big sweat can go, we have that young guy majerus or what ever his name was coming back to fill the lefty reliever role

Get rid of Reyes...his specialty is blowing the lead.I would stop watching the game when Reyes came in and start again when he left the game. If he has to face more than one batter the the score is either tied or behind after that. and that even if they had a big lead.

You just described the entire Twins middle relief, not just Reyes. Crain and Guerrier are just as bad.

REYES IS A HELLUVA LOT MORE DEPENDABLE THAN CRANE OR GUERRIER

huh? guerrier until mid year was good, then overused and tired out. reyes was awful all year. there is more to pitching than ERA. Reyes came into 11 ball games this year without recording an out. He also was incredibly bad with inherited runners (which dont reflect on ERA).

with brewslow and mijares the big sweat doesn't do anything for this team

My point was all of the Twins middle relief was scary last season, thats why I was screaming for Nathan to get some 2 inning saves, we blew a ton of leads in the 7th & 8th innings last season, none were reliable.

Get rid of all 3.
I'm still tellin ya, it would be cheaper for the uniform costs if they kept them, this is the twins after all. That, or sign 3 different players whose last names are reyes, guardado and punto, heck even hunter, santana and guzman too.

crane can go cost us to many games last year

I seem to remember Guerrier giving up more than one homer as well

The jury is still out on Crain. Last year was his first year back after major arm surgery. I think he will have a good spring and get back to his prior surgery form.

the thing that worries me about Crain is that his 2008 season last year was very similar to his 2006 season. He was supposedly healthy in 2006. If he can once again become the pitcher he was in 2005, then he'll be an asset to the bp. If he returns to 2008 and 2006 form, well, then he's another warm body in the bp.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
